Autumn Tops 2026 The Three Pieces Actually Worth Buying

AUTUMN 2026 · TOPS & KNITWEAR

By Ella Blake — Senior Fashion Stylist & Founder | TellarAlways honest, unbiased, & unsponsored

The three autumn tops worth spending your money on in 2026 are the chunky knit jumper, the oversized check shirt, and the elevated satin blouse — and if you build your autumn wardrobe around those three pieces, you will genuinely be set for the season. Everything else is noise.

I know that sounds reductive coming from a stylist, and yes — there are always going to be the sheer-panel tops and the avant-garde collar moments lighting up the fashion press. But in fifteen years of dressing real women for real autumns in real British weather, those three pieces are the ones that actually get worn, actually look good, and actually earn their wardrobe real estate every single year. In 2026, they've each had a proper update. Here's how to buy them right.

PICK 01 OF 03

The Chunky Knit Jumper

Knitwear is having a serious moment in autumn 2026 — and not the thin, barely-there kind. The pieces generating real excitement are properly substantial: cable-knit, bouclé, intarsia patterns, and rich ribbed textures in a palette that feels deeply autumnal without being predictable. We're talking chocolate brown, forest green, a warm cinnamon that I've already seen on approximately every fashion editor in London, and a moody slate blue that works beautifully as a neutral.

The silhouette is oversized but not shapeless. There's a distinction worth making here — a great chunky knit in 2026 has structure to it. The shoulder sits slightly dropped, the body is relaxed but not boxy, and it tucks into high-waisted trousers beautifully or sits over a midi skirt with real intention. I recently put a client in a chunky forest green cable knit half-tucked into wide-leg camel trousers and she sent me a photo a week later saying she'd worn the outfit four times. That's the standard I'm working to.

What to look for when buying:

  • Natural fibres — wool, merino, cashmere, or a blend. Synthetic knits pill fast and lose their shape by January.

  • Weight — hold it up. A quality knit has heft. If it feels flimsy, it will look it too.

  • Stitch detail — cable, rib, and textured weaves are all having a moment. Plain jersey-knit styles feel slightly last season right now.

  • Colour over black — I know, I know. But in autumn 2026, a rich earthy tone will do far more work than another black knit.

Ella's fail: I once bought a beautiful-looking oversized knit from a fast fashion brand because it was a perfect caramel colour and I was in a rush. It bobbled after two washes and the sleeves stretched to my knees. Buy once, buy better. Even at high street prices, there's a quality gap — read on for where to look.

PICK 02 OF 03

The Oversized Check Shirt

If there's one piece that bridges summer and autumn more elegantly than anything else in the wardrobe, it's the oversized shirt — and for 2026 the check shirt in particular has been elevated from weekend staple to genuine style statement. The key is scale and fabric. Small, tight tattersall checks feel dated; the prints getting traction now are bold windowpane checks, brushed heritage tartans, and oversized houndstooth, worn in flannels, brushed cotton, and fine wool blends.

How you wear it matters enormously. The styling mistake I see most often is wearing an oversized check shirt like a jacket you've forgotten to change out of — all the way open over a basic T-shirt, looking slightly accidental. The looks that are working right now: worn open but tied at the hem over wide-leg jeans, worn as a proper top half-tucked into a midi skirt, or — my personal favourite this season — fully buttoned with just the collar open, tucked into tailored trousers with a belt. That last option looks incredibly pulled-together for approximately zero effort.

What to look for:

  • A brushed cotton or flannel fabric — it photographs better and feels genuinely luxurious worn against skin in cooler temperatures.

  • Generous cut through the shoulder and body — you want room to layer a fine knit underneath when October arrives.

  • Bold pattern, muted palette — the checks that work in autumn are earthy: camel, chocolate, forest, rust. Avoid anything that feels too bright or summery in its tones.

PICK 03 OF 03

The Elevated Satin Blouse

Post Image

Every autumn there's a "smart top" story, and in 2026 it belongs firmly to the satin blouse — but done with more intention than the occasion-wear silk look of recent seasons. The versions worth buying have interesting details: a deliberately oversized collar, a subtle cowl neck, asymmetric gathering at the shoulder, or an unexpected texture like a satin that has a very faint crushed or crinkled finish. The colours doing the most work: deep burgundy, rich forest green, a warm ivory, and — if you're feeling brave — a jewel-toned cobalt that looks extraordinary under autumn lighting.

This is the piece that makes a pair of dark-wash straight-leg jeans look like an outfit. It's what you wear when you need to look like you tried without looking like you tried. I have a client who wears hers to every smart-casual work event and has been stopped three times at different functions to be asked where it's from. It was from Reiss. It cost less than a round of drinks at the venue. That's the power of the right blouse.

What to look for:

  • A fabric with some body — pure polyester satin can look cheap quickly. Look for blends that include some viscose or a matte-finish fabric that doesn't catch every light in the room.

  • Interesting detail — a plain satin blouse without a talking point is just a blouse. Find one with a collar, a pleat, a gathered sleeve or an unusual cut.

  • A colour that earns its place — autumn 2026 is the season to invest in a rich jewel tone, not another neutral.

Where to Shop — Honest Picks at Every Budget

Across all three of the above pieces, these are the brands genuinely delivering in autumn 2026 — chosen for quality, style accuracy, and real-world wearability rather than just being the biggest names:

HIGH STREET — BEST BUYS RIGHT NOW

Boden — Consistently one of the best high street options for quality knitwear. Their merino and lambswool jumpers in particular are excellent, and the colour palette is always well-judged for autumn.

The White Company — For the chunky knit, this is a genuine high street standout. Their cashmere blends and merino pieces feel far more expensive than the price tag. Particularly strong on neutral and classic tones.

All Saints — The best high street edit for the check shirt story. Their brushed flannels and heritage checks have a genuinely cool, slightly edgy quality that most high street brands don't quite land.

Barbour — Heritage checks done with real authenticity. Their brushed cotton overshirts and flannel shirts are proper quality and built to last well beyond one season.

Hobbs — For the elevated blouse, Hobbs is quietly excellent. Their satin and silk-effect tops for autumn are beautifully cut and work just as well at the office as out for dinner.

LK Bennett — Another strong pick for the satin blouse — they understand smart dressing for women who want style without looking overdressed, and the quality is consistently reliable.

Fat Face — Brilliant for the relaxed, easy end of the check shirt market. Their brushed cotton shirts are well-made, the fits are generous, and they hold up wash after wash.

Oliver Bonas — Often overlooked but genuinely worth a look for printed and satin blouses. Their autumn colour stories tend to be more interesting than the bigger high street players and the prices are very fair.

PREMIUM — WORTH THE INVESTMENT

  • Jigsaw — For all three picks, Jigsaw consistently delivers quality that punches above its price. Their merino knitwear and silk-blend blouses are particularly strong this autumn.

  • Reiss — Best-in-class for the elevated satin blouse at premium high street pricing. Their tailoring instincts carry over into their tops and blouses with excellent results.

  • Me&Em — A brilliant source for quality knitwear and considered shirting. Everything is made to last and their size range is one of the most inclusive at this price point.

LUXURY & DESIGNER — INVESTMENT PIECES

  • The Row — For the chunky knit done at the very highest level. Their oversized merino and cashmere pieces are the definition of quiet luxury and will genuinely last a decade.

  • Brunello Cucinelli — The gold standard of knitwear. If there is one investment knitwear piece you ever buy, a Brunello cashmere jumper in a rich autumnal tone is it. Full stop.

  • Nanushka — For the satin blouse with a modern, slightly avant-garde edge. Their vegan satin and silk-effect pieces have exceptional fabric quality and the cut is always impeccable.

TWO INDEPENDENT BRANDS WORTH KNOWING

  • Wyse London — A genuinely cult London knitwear label that doesn't get nearly enough mainstream attention. Their intarsia and striped merino knits are some of the most beautifully designed in the UK independent market, and the quality is exceptional. They're particularly strong on colour and pattern — if you're bored of the same high street knit options, start here.

  • Peregrine — A small heritage brand making exceptional wool knitwear and shirts in Somerset, largely under the radar in mainstream fashion circles. Their chunky knits are made from British wool and their check shirts in brushed wool are some of the most authentic available at any price point. Genuinely independent, genuinely brilliant.
