Black Tie Dress Code: Exactly What to Wear & How to Get It Right

A black tie invitation is one of the most exciting — and quietly stressful — things to find in your inbox. The good news? It's actually one of the most liberating dress codes there is, because the parameters are clear: full-length gown, elegant midi, or sleek tailoring. No guessing. No "smart casual" ambiguity. Just the opportunity to dress up properly, and I am fully here for it.

I've styled clients for everything from charity galas to awards evenings, and I've made my own fair share of black tie mistakes along the way. (There was one memorable evening in a structured midi that was fractionally too short, and I spent the entire night tugging it down. Lesson firmly learned.) So let me save you the trouble and walk you through exactly what works — and what to avoid.

What Does Black Tie Actually Mean?

Black tie sits just below white tie in the formality pecking order. For women, it doesn't necessarily mean a floor-length gown — though that's always a safe and beautiful choice. An elegant midi dress, a wide-leg palazzo trouser suit, or even a beautifully cut jumpsuit can all be entirely appropriate, provided the fabric and finish feel truly formal. This isn't the occasion for crepe jersey or anything with a casual drape. Think silk, satin, velvet, chiffon, and structured lace.

The Floor-Length Gown: The Classic Choice

If in doubt, a full-length gown is never wrong at black tie. It's the sartorial equivalent of a straight answer. The key is choosing a silhouette that flatters rather than fights your figure.

  • Column gowns — sleek, minimal, and endlessly chic. Best in silk or satin.

  • A-line gowns — universally flattering. Fitted at the bodice, flowing from the hip. Works on virtually every body shape.

  • Fishtail or mermaid silhouettes — dramatic and stunning, but make sure you can actually walk (and sit) comfortably.

  • Empire-line gowns — gorgeous for those who want to skim rather than define the midriff.

Coast is genuinely one of the best places to start for occasion gowns in the UK — they understand formal dressing and price it reasonably. Phase Eight does beautifully crafted, feminine gowns that always photograph brilliantly. And if you're after something with a little more edge, Reiss does sleek, minimalist column dresses that feel very current.

The Elegant Midi: A Modern Alternative

The midi has quietly become one of the most acceptable black tie options, particularly for evening events that aren't strictly traditional galas. The rules here are that the fabric must feel luxurious, the cut must be polished, and the styling needs to be elevated. A silk bias-cut midi or a heavily embellished hem can be just as impactful as a full gown.

LK Bennett does some of the most reliably elegant midi dresses for occasion wear — their craftsmanship is excellent and their silhouettes are flattering without being overdone. Ted Baker is wonderful for embellished and floral midis with that slightly romantic, luxurious feel that works perfectly at black tie. Whistles leans more minimal but consistently delivers beautifully cut occasion pieces in silk and satin that feel genuinely grown-up.

Trouser Suits & Jumpsuits: Yes, Absolutely

I know some traditionalists might wince, but a beautifully tailored wide-leg trouser suit or an elegant jumpsuit is entirely appropriate for black tie — and often looks far more striking than a gown. The secret is in the fabric and the detail. Velvet, silk-satin, or heavily textured suiting in rich, deep colours (midnight navy, forest green, burgundy, black) all read as properly formal.

  • A velvet wide-leg suit in deep jewel tones is an absolute showstopper.

  • A silk-satin jumpsuit with wide trousers feels effortlessly elegant.

  • Keep the top half sleek — a low neckline or interesting back detail adds the glamour.

Massimo Dutti does exceptional tailoring that bridges the gap between luxurious and wearable — their evening suits are beautifully constructed. Me&Em is a brilliant option for elevated separates and suits that photograph as designer without the price tag. For something truly striking, Hobbs has been quietly improving its evening wear and now offers some genuinely lovely velvet and satin pieces.

Two Independent Brands Worth Knowing

Needle & Thread

If you've never explored Needle & Thread, you're in for a treat. This British label is known for its exquisitely embellished gowns and midi dresses — all delicate florals, crystal detailing, and romantic silhouettes. They sit at a premium price point but feel completely designer, and they're incredibly popular for exactly this kind of occasion. Worth every penny.

Rixo

Rixo began as a vintage-inspired print brand but has evolved into one of the most covetable occasion wear labels in the UK. Their satin and silk dresses feel genuinely luxurious, and the prints are unlike anything on the high street. Independent, British, and endlessly stylish — they're my go-to recommendation when a client wants to stand out.

Shoes, Accessories & the Finishing Details

Black tie is also the occasion where accessories genuinely make or break a look. Here's my shorthand:

  • Shoes: Heeled sandals, block-heel courts, or kitten heels in satin, metallic, or suede. Avoid anything too casual — strappy flat sandals or chunky heels will undercut even the most beautiful gown.

  • Bag: A small clutch or minaudière. This is not the moment for a shoulder bag.

  • Jewellery: Go statement or go delicate — but pick one direction. Bold chandelier earrings with a simple necklace, or a striking cuff with nothing else. Don't layer everything at once.

  • Hair & make-up: This is black tie. Make the effort. An updo, a sleek blow-dry, or a properly set wave all elevate a look considerably.

Monsoon does beautiful embellished occasion shoes and jewellery that pair wonderfully with formal gowns. For a more premium option, LK Bennett again excels with elegant court shoes and clutch bags specifically designed for event dressing.

The One Rule I Always Give Clients

If you're ever in doubt about whether something is "enough" for black tie, ask yourself: would I feel slightly embarrassed sitting next to someone in a full gown? If the answer is yes, go back and try again. Black tie is one of the rare moments in life where you genuinely cannot be overdressed. Embrace it.
