Catwalk Jeans Styles That Will Be Big in 2027

The catwalk jeans styles set to dominate 2027 are the relaxed straight leg, exaggerated flares and oversized proportions, deep raw-indigo heritage washes, the proper return of low-rise, and head-to-toe denim-on-denim. If you only read one sentence, that's your shopping list sorted. But having spent the past few weeks glued to the Cruise 2027 shows — and pulling rails for clients who all want to know the same thing — I can tell you exactly what's coming, why it's coming, and how to actually wear it without looking like you're in fancy dress.

Denim is the one category I get asked about more than anything else, and 2027 is a genuinely exciting year for it. The skinny-versus-baggy war is finally over, and what's replacing it is far more grown-up. Here's the breakdown.

1. The relaxed straight leg — the new wardrobe workhorse

This is the silhouette I'd put money on for 2027. It's the “baggy but straight” cut we saw at Dior's Cruise 2027 show — light-wash, a touch roomy through the thigh, falling clean and dead-straight to the floor. Miley Cyrus wore the look front row and it summed up the whole mood: effortless, slightly slouchy, undeniably chic.

What makes the relaxed straight so clever is that it flatters almost everyone. Here's why it works:

  • It skims the body instead of clinging, so it's forgiving without being shapeless.

  • The straight drop from hip to hem lengthens the leg — especially with a pointed shoe or kitten heel.

  • It's a blank canvas. Tuck in a fine knit, throw on a blazer, done.

A quick styling win from my own wardrobe: I wore a mid-blue relaxed straight pair with a crisp white shirt and a slim brown belt to a client meeting last month and got three “where are those from” messages by lunch. The trick is keeping everything else sharp so the looseness reads as intentional.

2. Exaggerated flares & oversized proportions

At the other end of the scale, Demna's debut Cruise collection for Gucci — staged in Times Square and already nicknamed “GucciCore” — brought back washed, oversized denim with extreme flares and big, deliberate proportions. This is the maximalist, street-leaning side of 2027, and it'll trickle down fast.

A word of warning from a fashion fail of my own: years ago I bought a pair of enormous puddle-hem flares and wore them with a chunky boot and an oversized jumper. I looked, in my husband's kind words, “like a triangle.” The lesson stuck. Volume on the bottom needs something neat up top — a fitted tee, a tucked shirt, a cropped jacket. Balance is everything.

3. Raw indigo & deep heritage washes

The denim mills are forecasting a strong return to classic raw and dark-indigo denim for late 2026 into 2027 — think heavyweight, properly made jeans with that rich, untreated finish. This is the “quiet luxury” of denim: no rips, no whiskering, just beautiful fabric that ages with you. It's the most investment-friendly trend on this list because a good dark indigo pair never dates.

4. The low-rise return (handle with care)

Yes, it's back. Celine and Versace have leaned into the Y2K, hip-grazing rise, and the pendulum has officially swung away from the gravity-defying high waists of recent years. My honest advice: you do not need to bare your midriff to wear this. A mid-to-low rise with a longer top is the most wearable version, and infinitely more comfortable than the constricting ribcage styles we've been squeezing into.

5. Denim-on-denim, done properly

The Canadian tuxedo is having a proper, grown-up moment. The key for 2027 is tonal — pairing similar washes rather than clashing them — for a polished, considered finish. A light-wash relaxed jean with a matching shirt-jacket is the easiest way in.

Where to shop: my honest brand picks

High street & affordable:

  • Levi — the denim authority. Unbeatable for that raw, dark-indigo heritage cut and a brilliant relaxed straight.

  • Gap — doing some of the best loose, vintage-wash denim on the high street right now at sensible prices.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch — quietly become a denim powerhouse; their relaxed and curve-friendly fits are consistently praised.

  • Topshop — the natural home of the low-rise revival, with a long heritage of trend-led jeans.

  • River Island — go here for the exaggerated flares and on-trend statement shapes.

  • Mango — reliably nails the of-the-moment silhouette with an elevated, designer-ish feel.

  • New Look — the most affordable way to test-drive low-rise and Y2K shapes before committing.

Premium:

  • Citizens of Humanity — a fluid, relaxed silhouette and superb fabric; a genuine investment buy.

  • Paige — flattering, beautifully constructed denim that holds its shape all day.

  • Reiss — for the clean, tailored straight leg that dresses up effortlessly.

  • Whistles — understated, modern cuts that sit perfectly in the quiet-luxury camp.

Luxury & designer:

  • Frame — the gold standard for an elevated relaxed straight.

  • Agolde — the brand the runways keep collaborating with for that perfect lived-in wash.

  • Toteme — Scandi minimalism at its finest; the considered, architectural denim of the moment.

  • Khaite — cult, expensive and worth it if you want the definitive cigarette-straight jean.

Two independents worth knowing:

  • E.L.V. Denim — a brilliant London label crafting one-of-a-kind jeans from reworked vintage pairs. Genuinely sustainable, genuinely cool.

  • Triarchy — an independent denim house obsessed with water-saving production and impeccable cuts; a real left-field find for conscious shoppers.
