Chanel Sizing: What You Really Need to Know Before You Buy

Chanel runs small — often one to two sizes smaller than your usual UK size — and if you don't know that going in, you'll have a very expensive, very frustrating day at the boutique. I say this from personal experience. The first time I tried on a Chanel tweed jacket, I was absolutely certain a 38 would work (I'm a UK 10). Reader, it did not. We sized up to a 42 and it was still snug across the shoulders. It's one of those moments where your ego takes a little knock before the sales associate very kindly explains that, actually, this is completely normal at Chanel. Phew.

So let's get into it properly, because Chanel sizing has a few distinct quirks depending on what you're buying — and understanding them before you shop will save you a lot of time and heartache.

The Basics: Chanel Uses French Sizing

First things first: Chanel uses French (European) sizing across all of its ready-to-wear. That means you'll see sizes labelled as 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44 — not UK 6, 8, 10 etc. As a rough guide:

  • Chanel 36 = roughly UK 8, but fits more like a UK 6

  • Chanel 38 = roughly UK 10, but fits more like a UK 8

  • Chanel 40 = roughly UK 12, but fits more like a UK 10

  • Chanel 42 = roughly UK 14, but fits more like a UK 12

The rule of thumb most stylists work by: go up at least one full Chanel size from whatever you'd usually wear, sometimes two. The brand is cut for a very slim, narrow-shouldered, Parisian frame — and I say that as a factual observation, not a criticism. The clothes are made to a specific silhouette, and if your proportions differ even slightly, you'll feel it immediately.

The Iconic Tweed Jacket — Where Sizing Gets Really Tricky

If there is one piece where Chanel sizing will genuinely catch you out, it's the bouclé tweed jacket. The one. The holy grail of investment dressing. These jackets are structured, lined, and cut very close to the body — particularly through the chest and shoulders. The bouclé fabric itself has very little give.

I've worked with clients who wear a UK 12 comfortably everywhere else and have found themselves in a Chanel 44 to get the jacket to close properly. That's not a bad fit — that's just how the jacket is made. What matters is that the shoulder seam sits right and the line falls cleanly. The waist and length can often be adjusted by Chanel's in-house atelier (and yes, alterations at this price point are completely expected and offered as a matter of course).

My advice: always, always try the tweed jacket in person if you possibly can. Don't order blind unless you've already tried the exact style and know your Chanel jacket size.

Dresses and Skirts: Watch the Bust

Chanel's dresses — particularly the more structured A-line and sheath styles — are cut with a relatively modest bust allowance. If you're above a 36-inch bust, you may find that the size you'd usually wear in the jacket doesn't translate neatly to the dress. The shoulders and waist might fit perfectly, but there can be pulling across the bust. Again: size up, and don't be shy about it. The sales associates at Chanel boutiques are genuinely skilled and honest — it's in their interest to send you home in something that looks incredible, not just something you've managed to zip up.

Knitwear from Chanel is, happily, a little more forgiving. There's natural stretch, and the sizing tends to be slightly more generous through the body. Still run small overall, but less rigidly so than tailoring.

Shoes and Bags: No Drama There

Chanel footwear runs true to size in my experience — the classic ballet flat (the Ballerina) is spot on for most people. If you're between sizes, go up half a size as the leather can be a little stiff to begin with. And bags, of course, are blissfully size-free — the one category at Chanel where you can shop without a tape measure.

Smart Alternatives at Every Budget

If Chanel isn't in the budget right now (same, most months), these brands offer that same polished, tailored aesthetic with much more accessible sizing and price points:

  • Reiss — brilliant for structured blazers and tailored dresses with a clean, European cut. Consistently good quality and accurate sizing.

  • Whistles — understated, elegant, and reliably well-cut. Their tailoring is some of the best on the high street.

  • Cos — if you love Chanel's clean lines and architectural shapes, Cos delivers that at a fraction of the price. Sizing runs slightly slim here too, worth noting.

  • Massimo Dutti — genuinely one of the most underrated brands for grown-up, polished dressing. The quality-to-price ratio is exceptional.

  • Me&Em — a British brand doing beautifully cut pieces that feel luxurious without the luxury price tag. A firm favourite of mine for everyday elegance.

  • Jigsaw — timeless, thoughtfully made, and excellent for classic pieces that work season after season. Their tweed-adjacent textures are gorgeous.

  • LK Bennett — for occasion dressing with that polished, put-together quality Chanel does so well. Particularly strong on occasion-wear jackets and tailored dresses.

Two Independent Brands Worth Knowing

  • Sézane (sezane.com) — the French label that basically lives in the space between Chanel's aesthetic and everyday wearability. Beautiful fabrics, Parisian detailing, and sizing that's slightly more generous than Chanel. If you love the French look without the French sizing stress, start here.

  • Beulah London (beulahlondon.com) — a gorgeous, independent British label known for its beautifully structured pieces with incredible attention to detail. Ethical production, flattering cuts, and the kind of quiet luxury that Chanel fans tend to respond to immediately.
