Chaps Women's Sizing Guide – Does It Run Big, Small, or True to Size?

Chaps clothing runs slightly large by UK standards – and if you're ordering online without trying it on first, that's genuinely useful to know before you end up sending half your order back. As a brand born out of the Ralph Lauren stable, Chaps was built on that classic American preppy aesthetic: relaxed, roomy, easy to wear. It's not a brand that's trying to nip you in at the waist. It's the fashion equivalent of a proper Sunday roast – comforting, reliable, and not remotely trying to show off.

I've styled a lot of women in pieces from this sort of heritage-American category, and the thing I always flag is the US-to-UK sizing gap. It catches people out constantly. A US size 10 and a UK size 10 are not the same thing – and with Chaps, that distinction matters.

The Chaps Fit – What You're Actually Getting

Chaps is unapologetically classic in its approach to fit. Think broad shoulders, a longer torso, and a relaxed cut through the body. If you're used to shopping at places like Reiss or COS where everything is cut with a degree of precision, Chaps will feel noticeably roomier – even in the same numeric size.

  • Tops and blouses: Generally come up generous. If you're between sizes or prefer anything close to the body, size down.

  • Knitwear: The oversized fit is partly intentional here – great for layering, but be aware it's not a snug sweater situation.

  • Trousers and jeans: Waist sizing follows standard US inch-based sizing, which is fairly consistent. Where it gets trickier is the rise – Chaps cuts tend to sit higher and with more room in the seat than you'd find on most European brands.

  • Dresses: The US-to-UK gap is most pronounced here. A US 8 is roughly a UK 12, but Chaps dresses tend to be cut with extra ease – so a UK 10 woman would likely need a US 6 or even 4 for a fitted look.

  • Outerwear: Actually fairly true to size here. Ralph Lauren's own guidance is to stick with your true size in coats and jackets, and Chaps follows suit.

UK Shoppers – Here's My Honest Advice

I'll be direct: if you're shopping Chaps from the UK, size down one from your usual. This isn't a brand that flatters through tight tailoring – it flatters through quality fabric and clean, classic lines. So the aim is to get the right size for that to land properly, rather than swimming in fabric because you stuck with your standard UK size.

The one exception I'd make is coats and heavier jackets. Take your true size, especially if you're layering underneath – the cut already has the structure to hold its shape without going roomy.

I once ordered a Chaps-style heritage shirt in my usual UK 12 and it could have doubled as a tent. A US 8 (roughly a UK 10) was the sweet spot. Lesson learned, as ever, the hard way.

Who Is Chaps Best For?

Honestly? If you love the classic, collegiate American aesthetic – Oxford shirts, cable-knit jumpers, smart-casual chinos, that kind of thing – Chaps delivers it at an accessible price point with decent quality. It's particularly well-suited to:

  • Women who like a relaxed, non-body-con silhouette

  • Taller women who struggle with proportions in UK brands – the longer torso cuts can be a genuine win

  • Anyone who wants a polished, put-together look without anything feeling tight or restrictive

  • Weekend dressing – smart-casual, layerable, timeless

Where it's less ideal: if you're petite, the proportions can overwhelm. And if you're looking for anything fashion-forward or trend-led, Chaps isn't really your brand. It's resolutely classic, which is either its greatest strength or its limitation depending on your wardrobe.

The Best Alternatives to Chaps for Women

Post Image

If Chaps ticks your aesthetic boxes but the sizing or availability feels like a faff, there are brilliant alternatives right here in the UK. These are the brands I'd point my clients towards:

  • Barbour – The gold standard for British heritage dressing. Their quilted jackets and wax coats are iconic, and their womenswear range has improved enormously. Runs fairly true to size.

  • Boden – Classic, colourful, quintessentially British. Great knitwear and smart-casual pieces. Sizing is consistent and they have excellent petite options.

  • Gant – Perhaps the closest to Chaps in terms of aesthetic – that Ivy League, East Coast American feel, but with a slightly more European cut. Often sizes slightly more generously, so worth checking their size guide.

  • Tommy Hilfiger – Shares the Americana DNA but with a slightly more contemporary edge. Runs true to size and widely available in the UK.

  • Jigsaw – For a more polished, grown-up version of the classic wardrobe. Beautiful fabrics, great tailoring, and reliable sizing across seasons.

  • White Stuff – Brilliant for relaxed, textured, characterful dressing. Very accessible sizing and a brand I genuinely enjoy recommending because they cut for real women.

  • Fat Face – Casual, relaxed, great for weekend staples. If you love the easy-wearing quality of Chaps but want something a bit more coastal-British in flavour, Fat Face delivers.

  • Me&Em – A step up in terms of price point, but the quality and consistency of fit is exceptional. If you want the classic silhouette elevated, this is it.

Two Independent Brands Worth Knowing

I always like to include a couple of brands that might be slightly off your radar – because honestly some of the best fashion finds aren't on the high street.

  • Brora – A quietly brilliant Scottish heritage brand that does cashmere, lambswool, and classic British country dressing to an exceptional standard. The fit is elegant and consistent – and if Chaps appeals to you aesthetically, Brora will absolutely resonate.

  • Beaumont Organic – A UK independent with a focus on organic fabrics and relaxed, well-considered silhouettes. Their sizing is inclusive and their quality is streets ahead of many high street equivalents. A brand worth bookmarking.
