Does Celine Run Small? An Honest Stylist's Guide to Celine Sizing

Yes — Celine runs small, and deliberately so. If you walk in expecting to grab your usual size, there's a very real chance you'll leave empty-handed or, worse, feeling terrible about yourself. I've seen it happen too many times. So before you spend four figures on a blazer you can't do up, let me walk you through exactly what to expect.
French Sizing: The First Hurdle
Celine uses French sizing — 34, 36, 38, 40, 42 — rather than UK sizes. Already, before we even get to the fit, you're converting. As a rough guide:
French 34 = UK 6
French 36 = UK 8
French 38 = UK 10
French 40 = UK 12
French 42 = UK 14
That's the theoretical conversion. In practice, because Hedi Slimane's cuts run slim, many women find they need to size up beyond what the chart suggests. A UK 10 who normally wears a European 38 may find herself needing a 40 or even 42 at Celine — and that's not a body issue, it's just Slimane's vision.
The Hedi Slimane Effect
When Hedi Slimane took over as creative director in 2018, he brought with him the same razor-sharp, androgynous silhouette he'd developed at Dior Homme and Saint Laurent. Think slim shoulders, narrow hips, long lean proportions. The clothes are beautiful — genuinely. But they're cut for a very specific body. I once tried on a Celine blazer in my usual French size and couldn't get it past my shoulders. Humbling. But once I sized up twice, the thing was extraordinary.
The reality is that Celine RTW is best suited to those who are narrow through the chest, shoulders, and hip. If you have any curve — and most of us do — you'll almost certainly need to size up. This isn't a flaw; it's just knowing your brand.
How Different Garments Fit
Tops, T-shirts & Knitwear
Run slim — expect a close, almost body-skimming fit even in your converted size
If you're fuller through the bust or have broader shoulders, size up one — possibly two
The knitwear is gorgeous but structured, so don't expect the give you'd get from a cashmere jumper elsewhere
Trousers & Denim
Cut straight and narrow — particularly through the thigh and hip
If you carry any weight in your hips or thighs, size up at least one, maybe two sizes
The waistband can often run smaller than expected relative to the hip measurement — check both
Blazers & Jackets
This is where Celine's sizing catches the most people out
Designed with a very narrow shoulder — if you're broad-shouldered, sizing up won't always solve the problem
Ideally try before you buy; if shopping online, measure your shoulder width carefully against the product measurements
Dresses
More varied in fit depending on style — some of the looser, bohemian silhouettes are forgiving
Bodycon or more structured styles will follow the same slim logic as the rest of the collection
Shoes
Celine shoes are one of the easier categories — they generally run true to size
Some styles run slightly narrow, so if you have a wider foot, go up half a size
The leather quality is excellent and does soften with wear, but I wouldn't rely on that to solve a fit issue
My Honest Buying Advice

If you can, try Celine in-store first. The SA's are usually well-trained and will steer you to the right size without drama. If you're buying online — from Celine's own site, Farfetch, or 24S — read the product measurements carefully and measure yourself properly before ordering. Celine's own size guide is available on their website and gives chest, waist, and hip measurements per size, which is genuinely helpful.
And if you're buying secondhand via Vestiaire Collective or The RealReal (a great way to access Celine at a fraction of the price), always ask the seller for the flat measurements of the garment itself rather than relying on the label size alone. Label sizes mean nothing without context.
Brilliant Alternatives at Every Budget
Love the Celine aesthetic but not the price tag — or the sizing headache? Here are some brands I genuinely recommend that deliver that same quiet, elevated minimalism:
High Street & Contemporary
COS — The go-to for Celine-adjacent minimalism at a fraction of the cost. Clean cuts, restrained palette, and the sizing is far more inclusive and predictable.
Massimo Dutti — Beautifully made basics with a European sensibility. Their tailoring in particular rivals brands at twice the price.
Reiss — Smart, polished separates and blazers with a modern British edge. Runs more true to size and fits a wider range of body shapes.
Whistles — Consistently underrated. Their tailoring is lovely and their sizing is straightforward and inclusive.
Me&Em — Everything I want from a grown-up wardrobe staple brand. The quality is superb for the price and their sizing guidance is excellent.
Jigsaw — A brand that truly understands how to dress a woman rather than a runway model. Great blazers, beautiful fabrics.
Mango — Their premium line in particular is exceptional value. The tailoring often has a genuine Parisian feel at very accessible prices.
Independent Picks
Sézane — The French brand that's quietly become one of the most beloved independent fashion labels in Europe. Parisian through and through, sizing is consistent and their lookbooks are as good as any luxury house.
Envelope1976 — A Scandinavian brand making beautifully considered, slow-fashion pieces. Relaxed, elevated, and genuinely original — exactly the energy Celine is reaching for, without the exclusivity anxiety.
