Does sizing run large or small at Dolce & Gabbana?
Author: Stylist at TellarDate: 2026
Here's the short answer: Dolce & Gabbana runs small, and it uses Italian sizing, which sits roughly two sizes above your usual UK number. So a UK 8 is generally an IT 40, a UK 10 an IT 42, and so on up the scale. But the label is only half the story. D&G cuts close to the body, especially in its corsetry, tailoring and those famous bombshell dresses, so even with the right number on the tag, the fit can feel snugger than you expect. I've styled enough of these pieces to tell you exactly where it'll pinch and where it won't.
Why D&G Feels Smaller Than the Number Suggests
This is a house built on the hourglass. Domenico and Stefano have spent decades celebrating curves, and the cut reflects that, nipped waists, structured busts, and a silhouette that wants to hug. The result is gorgeous on the body but unforgiving if you size by habit rather than measurement.
I learned this the hard way years ago with a black D&G corset dress I bought in a sample sale. I grabbed my "usual" without trying it, convinced I'd be swimming in it. Reader, I could not do up the back zip. It went home with a friend half a size down and looked sensational on her. Lesson learned: with this brand, ego shopping will betray you.
A few patterns worth knowing:
Corsetry and formalwear run smallest. Anything boned, structured or occasion-led, size up one and don't second-guess it.
Rigid fabrics are stricter than stretch. A satin dress with a little give will often sit true to size; a fully woven, non-stretch piece will not forgive a half-inch.
Recent knitwear and outerwear are kinder. Newer ready-to-wear and oversized knits are cut far more generously, so you may even drop a size there.
Denim runs notably tight. D&G jeans are sculpted through the hip and seat; size up one to two from your usual fit. More on denim in my Jeans Trends 2026 guide.
Shoes are the easy one. European sizing, true to size, with maybe a half-size up if you've a wider foot.
How to Buy D&G and Actually Get the Fit Right
Forget the size you "always" are. Take your bust, waist and hip measurements and buy to those, not to the label. The core womenswear line spans roughly IT 36 to IT 50 (UK 4 to 18), but availability shifts by style, so the structured pieces in particular sell through fast in the middle sizes. If you're between two, and the piece is tailored, go up. You can always have a waist taken in by a good tailor; you cannot magic fabric out of thin air. My golden rule with luxury occasionwear is the same one I give every client: buy for the broadest part of you, then tailor the rest.
Where to Shop if You Love the D&G Look (Across Every Budget)

Not everyone wants to spend four figures on a printed dress, and you don't have to. Here's where I send clients chasing that Mediterranean-glamour, bold-print, sculpted energy at every price point.
High Street
Mango — the closest high street match for D&G's sun-drenched, Mediterranean sensibility. Their occasion and printed pieces punch well above their price.
Ted Baker — for the bold florals and statement prints D&G made iconic, with a flattering, waist-conscious cut.
Coast — my go-to high street name for structured, body-skimming occasionwear when you need glamour without the luxury spend.
Massimo Dutti — for the polished Italian-leaning tailoring; beautifully finished separates that read far more expensive than they are.
Premium
Reiss — sharp, sculpted tailoring and slip dresses with that elevated, modern-glamour edge.
Me&Em — for clever, body-aware design and prints that flatter; their fit is consistent and considered.
Hobbs — proper occasion and tailoring expertise, especially strong if you want structure through the waist.
Luxury & Designer
Max Mara — the other great name in Italian luxury, peerless for tailoring and coats if you love D&G's craftsmanship but prefer a quieter, more architectural line.
Two Independents Worth Knowing
And because the best wardrobes aren't built on the obvious names, two left-field labels I genuinely rate for this aesthetic:
RIXO — the London independent doing painterly, maximalist prints on dresses that drape beautifully; a brilliant D&G alternative when you want print without the price tag.
Borgo de Nor — a small London house specialising in bold botanical prints and proper, romantic occasion dresses. Quietly one of the most D&G-adjacent brands going.
