French Connection Sizing: Does FCUK Run True to Size?

French Connection generally runs true to size — but with a few quirks worth knowing before you order. I've had some genuinely brilliant FCUK finds over the years (a bodycon midi that I still get complimented on), and I've also had a couple of frustrating moments where a structured shift dress just would not play ball. So let me save you the guesswork.

FCUK is one of those brands that sits in a sweet spot — more elevated than your typical high street, without crossing into the premium price bracket. The fit tends to be shaped and tailored, which means sizing is worth getting right. Here's what you need to know, category by category.

Overall Sizing: True to Size With a Generous Edge

French Connection doesn't run small. If anything, a handful of styles lean ever so slightly generous — particularly in jersey tops and relaxed dresses. Most shoppers find their usual UK size fits well, which is reassuring when you're shopping online.

  • UK sizing runs from a 6 through to a 20 across most categories

  • Their size guide uses bust, waist and hip measurements in both inches and centimetres

  • If you're between sizes, FCUK's own advice is to go for the larger size — always a sensible rule

  • The brand is transparent about model sizing on product pages, which I appreciate

Dresses: Mostly Great, But Watch the Shift Styles

This is where things get a tiny bit nuanced. I've found FCUK dresses — particularly the jersey wrap and midi styles — to be reliably flattering and true to size. However, if you're looking at a structured shift or tailored bodycon style, sizing can be less predictable. One former FCUK sales assistant I spoke to confirmed it: shift styles in particular can behave oddly depending on the fabric content.

  • Jersey and wrap dresses: True to size, forgiving fit

  • Shift and tailored styles: Order your usual size but consider sizing up if you're fuller on the bust or hip

  • Bodycon styles: Stick firmly to your usual size — going up can look shapeless on these cuts

  • Midi and maxi lengths: Generally consistent with standard UK sizing

For occasion dressing, comparable sizing and aesthetic is found at Phase Eight (brilliant for smart-casual midi dresses), Hobbs (similarly true-to-size with great tailored cuts), and LK Bennett (occasion-wear with really solid, consistent sizing). For something a bit different, I'm a fan of Kitri — an independent London brand with gorgeous printed dresses that run true to size and feel really considered.

Jeans & Trousers: Trustworthy and Comfortable

French Connection's denim is one of its stronger suits. The jeans are widely praised for being comfortable, well-fitted and — crucially — true to size. I've worn their straight-leg styles for years and they've never let me down in the sizing department.

  • Jeans are true to size across straight, slim and wide-leg cuts

  • If you prefer a more relaxed fit, sizing up by one works well

  • Trousers and tailored bottoms also run consistently — measure your waist and compare to the chart if in doubt

For denim alternatives at a similar price point, Reiss offers beautifully cut trousers with reliable sizing, and Massimo Dutti is excellent for tailored bottoms that fit like a dream. If you're after great-fitting jeans specifically, Paige is worth knowing — premium price, yes, but the fit across waist and hip is consistently true to size.

Tops and Knitwear: Size Up If You're Fuller on the Bust

This is probably the one area where FCUK can catch people out slightly. Fitted tops — particularly those with a structured or shaped bodice — can run a little snug across the chest for fuller-busted women. I'd say this is more a cut issue than a true sizing issue, but it's worth knowing.

  • Standard jersey tops: true to size

  • Fitted shirts and structured blouses: size up if you're a D cup or above

  • Knitwear: true to size but consider going up if you want a relaxed, layered feel

For knitwear and smart tops at a similar aesthetic level, Me&Em is brilliant — beautifully made and consistently sized. Mint Velvet is another strong pick for tops if you find FCUK a touch snug on the bust; they cut slightly more generously through the chest. And for a gorgeous independent option, Never Fully Dressed does spectacular printed blouses with a really wearable, inclusive fit.

Coats and Jackets: Spot On — But Layer Up

Outerwear at French Connection is generally well-sized and reliable. The cuts are smart without being boxy, and they hold their shape well season after season. The one caveat: if you're a dedicated layer-upper (chunky knit under your coat is a non-negotiable for me from October onwards), go up one size for comfort.

  • Standard fit: your usual UK size will work well

  • If layering over knitwear: size up by one

  • Blazers and tailored jackets: true to size with a smart, fitted silhouette

For comparable outerwear, Ted Baker runs similarly true to size with a more decorative aesthetic, while Boden is a reliable choice for coats with a slightly more relaxed, British-countryside feel. Barbour is worth flagging too for those who want a classic wax jacket — though their sizing tends to run generous, which is actually ideal for layering.

How Does French Connection Compare to Other Brands?

FCUK sits in a similar sizing universe to Hobbs, Reiss and Me&Em — all are reasonably true to UK standard sizing, with slightly fitted, feminine cuts. It's more consistent than Zara (notoriously unpredictable) and generally more generous than some premium brands. If you're a regular Phase Eight or LK Bennett shopper, you should find FCUK sizing very familiar.

My Final Verdict

French Connection is one of the more dependable brands on the high street when it comes to sizing. Buy your usual UK size for dresses, jeans and knitwear. Size up for heavily structured or fitted styles — particularly if you're fuller on the bust — and go up one for coats if you plan to layer. That's genuinely it. No drama, no size chart gymnastics required.
