How Do I Style My Jeans for Spring 2027?

For spring 2027, style your jeans long and lean rather than extreme: a straight or gently tapered leg in raw, ecru or light indigo denim, worn with a neat top, a cropped or structured jacket and a clean, low-profile shoe. The very baggy, floor-pooling look and the hard skinny have both had their moment. What replaces them is a calmer, sharper silhouette that reads expensive without trying.
I've been styling denim for two decades and I've never known a season with this much choice. That's the real challenge now — not finding a trend to follow, but knowing which shape suits you and how to build an outfit around it. Here's exactly how I'm approaching it.
The Shapes That Matter for Spring 2027
Denim mills and designers have been signalling the same thing for the S/S 27 season: fewer dominant trends, more personal choice, and a move towards cleaner construction over heavy distressing. That said, four shapes are doing the heavy lifting.
The long straight leg. The workhorse. Sits high or mid on the waist, falls clean from the hip, breaks just above the shoe. If you buy one pair this spring, buy this.
The softened barrel. The barrel hasn't gone anywhere, but it's matured — less exaggerated curve, darker washes, more wearable. Balance it with something neat on top.
The cigarette and the slim bootcut. Both back, both quietly flattering, both a relief if the volume trend never suited you. The bootcut in particular looks brilliant with a heel hidden underneath.
The A-line wide leg. Narrow through the hip, widening gradually to the hem. Far more elegant than a straight-cut wide leg and much kinder on shorter frames.
Washes and Colours: Where Spring 2027 Shifts
This is where the season really moves. Raw denim — stiff, untreated, no fake fading — is the sophisticated pick, and for spring it's arriving in lighter weights with a fluid drape rather than the board-stiff versions of old. Alongside it:
Ecru, buttermilk and cream replace black and dark brown as the go-to non-blue.
Light and vintage-inspired indigo for weekends; clean dark indigo for anything with a dress code.
Heavy rips and dirty washes are the ones to leave behind. They look dated next to everything else this season.
The Proportion Rule I Give Every Client
Volume below means neatness above. That's it. A fine knit, a fitted long-sleeve tee, a slim vest, a shirt tucked or half-tucked so the waistband is visible. If the top hides your waist entirely and the jeans are wide, you lose your shape completely.
The second rule is the waistband itself. If it gapes at the back or the rise sits wrong, no amount of styling rescues it. Get the fit right first — the outfit builds itself after that.
Shoes: The Detail Most People Get Wrong
Straight leg: loafers, pointed flats, low-profile trainers.
Barrel: a pump or a slim pointed flat. Avoid chunky, rounded soles — the curve already shortens the leg.
Bootcut: a slim-toe ankle boot or a block heel worn underneath the hem, never over it.
Wide leg: a heeled sandal or a mule, hem grazing the floor.
My Fashion Fail (and the Win That Fixed It)
When barrel jeans first landed, I bought a pale, exaggerated pair and wore them with a chunky trainer and an oversized sweatshirt to a client meeting in London. I caught myself in a shop window on Marylebone High Street and genuinely stopped walking. I looked about five foot two and entirely shapeless. Volume on volume on volume — a rookie error, and I've been doing this for twenty years.
The fix was embarrassingly simple. Same jeans, a fitted black rib top, a cropped jacket and a flat pointed shoe. Suddenly they looked deliberate. That's the whole lesson: the jeans aren't the problem, the surrounding pieces are.
Where to Shop: High Street

Levi's — still the benchmark for a straight leg. The 501 and its variations remain the most copied jeans in the world for good reason.
Uniqlo — exceptional value, Japanese-milled denim, brilliant straight and wide-leg basics.
Abercrombie & Fitch — consistently the strongest denim reviews on the high street right now, with a genuinely wide range of rises and lengths.
M&S — reliable fit, good stretch-to-structure balance, and the wide-leg styles punch well above their price.
Next — strong on petite and tall lengths, which is where most high street denim falls down.
Hush — relaxed, soft-washed shapes with a considered, grown-up feel.
Mint Velvet — elevated casual denim that works for the school run and dinner alike.
River Island — the quickest to market on trend shapes like the barrel, at a price that makes experimenting sensible.
Where to Shop: Premium
AGOLDE — the reference point for modern straight and barrel legs, with the best washes in the business.
Citizens of Humanity — beautiful fabric quality and a cut that flatters real hips.
Frame — sharp, clean silhouettes; their Le Jane and wide-leg styles are stylist staples.
Paige — the most forgiving stretch denim at this level, ideal if you want comfort without slouch.
Good American — the widest genuine size range in premium denim, and the fit consistency is excellent.
Where to Shop: Luxury and Designer
Totême — the definitive minimalist straight leg. Rigid, clean, worth the investment.
Joseph — tailored denim with a sartorial finish, perfect for the raw-denim direction.
Ralph Lauren — timeless washes and an easy relaxed fit that never looks of-the-moment.
Two Independents Worth Knowing
E.L.V. Denim — a London label making one-off jeans from reclaimed vintage denim, cut and reassembled in East London. No two pairs are identical and the fit through the waist is genuinely excellent.
Triarchy — a small Los Angeles denim house working with dramatically reduced water use and plant-based stretch. Quietly one of the best-cut wide legs I've worn.
