How I Found the Perfect T-Shirt

Author: Stylist at TellarDate: 2025

You wouldn’t think finding a decent T-shirt would be that hard. But it is. Or at least, it was for me. Too thin, too stiff, necklines that stretched out after one wash, sleeves that fit like armbands, hems that crept up the second I raised my arms. For something that’s meant to be basic, the humble white T-shirt caused me more wardrobe frustration than anything else.

And don’t get me started on the fits. One brand’s “relaxed” was another brand’s “slim spray-on.” I’m not looking for a muscle tee or something cropped to my ribs. I wanted something simple—but good. That actually made me feel pulled together without trying too hard.

Why I Got Fed Up

There was a point where I had about 14 white tees in rotation—none of which I loved. Some were too short. Some shrank in weird ways. Some felt nice for the first wear and then lost all shape. And because I’m in decent shape—but not “gym guy” ripped—I needed a tee that didn’t cling or drown me either.

What Changed It

I measured myself properly for the first time (with help from tellar.co.uk to check sizing across the brands I actually liked. Game changer. I could finally see which brands cut longer, slimmer, or roomier—before I even bought anything.

What I Look For Now

  • Midweight fabric (180–220gsm): Feels solid without being heavy
  • Slightly wider collar: Not stretched out, but modern
  • Sleeves that hit mid-bicep: Not too short, not elbow length
  • Length that covers my belt: No cropped vibes here

The Brands That Actually Work (for me, anyway)

High Street

  • Uniqlo – Their U Crew Neck Tee is £15 and better than tees 4x the price
  • Arket – Supima cotton with a clean neckline and good structure
  • COS – Heavyweight, minimal, a little oversized

Premium

  • Reiss – Their stretch cotton tees fit like they were tailored
  • Percival – Subtle textures, great colours, proper grown-up basics
  • Wax London – Boxy and breathable, perfect for layering

Designer

  • Sunspel – Silky-soft, cut to perfection, but you’ll pay for it
  • ASKET – Transparency, quality, and spot-on fit
  • Represent – Their heavyweight blanks are seriously well made

How I Wear Mine

Post Image

  • With jeans + blazer: Clean and easy—never fails
  • With shorts and a chore jacket: My spring/summer go-to
  • Under a knitted overshirt: Adds texture without bulk
