How to Find Your Perfect Fit at A.Emery

A.Emery runs small — and if you don't know that going in, you're going to be very confused when your usual size arrives and feels like it belongs to a slightly smaller version of yourself. The short answer: size up by one, sometimes two, and always check the brand's measurements rather than trusting the label.
I discovered this the hard way. I ordered the Pepa Trouser in my standard size — the one I wear in everything from COS to Reiss — and spent a bewildering ten minutes trying to work out if I'd accidentally bought cropped wide-legs or if they were simply not made for hips that exist in the real world. They were beautiful. They did not fit. Back they went.
Since then, I've done my homework, and I'm here to save you the return postage.
Who Is A.Emery?
A.Emery is an Australian label that has quietly become one of the most coveted names in considered dressing. Founded in 2017, the brand sits squarely in the elevated minimalist space — think clean lines, relaxed tailoring, beautiful fabrication, and a colour palette that barely strays from sand, ivory, and the occasional slate blue. Think Totême-adjacent, but with a slightly more bohemian, sun-warmed edge. It's the kind of brand where every piece looks like it was designed to be worn on a terrace somewhere gorgeous and then straight into a dinner reservation.
In the UK, A.Emery is available directly through their website and via select stockists including SSENSE and Net-a-Porter. The price point is firmly premium — we're talking £200–£500 for most pieces — so getting your size right before you buy is not optional.
How Does A.Emery Sizing Work?
A.Emery uses Australian sizing, which is generally one to two sizes smaller than UK sizing. Here's the practical translation:
A.Emery AU 6 = UK 8–10 (petite frame, narrow through the hip)
A.Emery AU 8 = UK 10–12
A.Emery AU 10 = UK 12–14
A.Emery AU 12 = UK 14–16
Beyond the sizing system, the cut tends to run narrow — particularly through the waist and hip. The brand designs with a relaxed, somewhat boxy silhouette in mind for tops and outerwear, but the trouser and skirt fits are more tailored and unforgiving through the seat and thigh. If you're curvier below the waist, always size to your hip measurement rather than your waist.
Key Pieces and How They Fit
Trousers: This is where most people go wrong. The wide-leg styles — like the Santiago and Pepa — have a high rise that's genuinely high, which is wonderful, but the thigh and hip are cut slim for a wide-leg. Size up at least one, potentially two if you have any curve to your lower half. The inseam runs long (around 32–33 inches) which is brilliant if you're tall, but petite wearers will need to hem.
Tops and shirts: The boxy, relaxed cuts mean these are more forgiving. Stick to your usual size or go one up if you prefer a more generous, drapey fit. The linen shirts in particular have a beautiful, lived-in slouch that improves with wash.
Dresses: Again, go up at least one size if you have a defined waist or fuller bust. The wrap and midi styles are more accommodating, but fitted dresses are cut slim — the brand's ideal fit model appears to be a very slender AU 8.
Knitwear: Runs true to the Australian size conversion. The knits are generally more relaxed in cut, so this is probably your easiest A.Emery category to shop without anxiety.
If You Love A.Emery's Aesthetic But Need an Easier Fit

Here's the thing — you don't have to reserve your minimalist, elevated wardrobe for the brands that will cooperate with your measurements. These are some of my favourite alternatives for that same clean, considered aesthetic at various price points:
COS — The original elevated high street minimalist. Relaxed tailoring, excellent linen, and sizing that's consistent and reliable. A genuine alternative to A.Emery at a third of the price.
Massimo Dutti — Beautifully made, European sizing, and a grown-up colour palette that rivals anything at premium level. The trousers in particular are exceptional value.
Whistles — One of the best British high street options for that relaxed-tailored look. The sizing is generous and the quality is surprisingly good.
Jigsaw — Quietly brilliant for linen and natural fabrics. British sizing, reliable fit, and a brand that understands that real women have hips.
Me&Em — If you want that effortless, intelligent wardrobe feel and a brand built around real fit, Me&Em is doing something genuinely right. Their straight-leg trousers are a staple in my wardrobe.
Hush — For the relaxed, weekend side of the A.Emery aesthetic. Easy sizing, beautiful textures, and great for the kind of effortless dressing A.Emery does so well.
Mango — Particularly the Premium and Committed lines. The quality has genuinely improved and some of the tailoring pieces could sit comfortably next to A.Emery's simpler designs.
Reiss — For elevated office-to-evening pieces with reliable UK sizing and a minimalist finish. Their tailoring is excellent and very accessible sizing-wise.
For something a little more under-the-radar, I'd point you towards Ahlvar Gallery — a Swedish label with an A.Emery-esque DNA, beautiful natural fabrics, and an easier size range — and Baserange, a Copenhagen brand producing minimal, considered basics in natural fibres that are genuinely size-inclusive and beautifully made. Both are worth bookmarking.
My Honest Advice Before You Buy
Always measure your actual hip and waist in centimetres before ordering — don't rely on your usual brand size
Compare your measurements to A.Emery's garment measurements (listed per item on their site) rather than the size guide — this is the most reliable method
If you're between sizes, go up — the brand's pieces look intentional with a little extra room, never sloppy
Check the return policy before ordering, as international returns from A.Emery's website can be costly
If buying via Net-a-Porter or SSENSE, the return process is significantly more straightforward
