TELLAR — THE UK'S LEADING SIZING TOOL

SIZING GUIDE · DENIM & CASUALWEAR

Their jeans are genuinely brilliant — but the US sizing can trip UK shoppers up. Here's how to get it right.

By Ella Blake  |  Tellar Fashion Hub

American Eagle runs true to US sizing, which means UK shoppers need to think carefully before adding to cart — but once you crack the code, it's honestly one of the most rewarding brands to shop. Their denim in particular is exceptional: the range of fits is vast, the quality is genuinely good for the price point, and they're one of the few mainstream brands that has properly embraced size inclusivity without making it feel like an afterthought. I got my sizing completely wrong on my first order — ended up with jeans two sizes too large — but once I worked it out, I haven't looked back.

Understanding US vs UK Sizing at American Eagle

The first thing to wrap your head around is that American Eagle uses US sizing throughout — numbered dress sizes, waist-inseam measurements for jeans, and lettered sizing (XS–XXL) for tops and knitwear. This doesn't have to be complicated, but it does require a quick size conversion before you shop. Here's the key rule:

  • For tops, dresses and bottoms (letter sizing): American Eagle generally runs true to size compared to UK sizing — so your usual UK size typically translates directly

  • For numbered dress and trouser sizes: US sizes run approximately 4 numbers above UK — a UK 10 is roughly a US 6, a UK 12 is a US 8, and so on

  • For jeans: go by your waist measurement in inches — this is the most accurate way and bypasses the conversion entirely

  • Aerie (their lingerie and loungewear line): sizes very consistently in UK terms; many shoppers find it runs slightly generous, so consider sizing down one

💡 Stylist's tip: Always, always measure your waist in inches before buying AE jeans. Their numbered sizes can feel inconsistent across fits, but the waist measurement is reliable across the board. I measure, I buy, I never return.

American Eagle Size Guide — Women's Clothing

Here's a quick reference guide to help you convert your UK size across American Eagle's core ranges:

UK SizeAE Letter SizeAE Numbered SizeWaist (inches)Bust (cm)UK 6XSUS 0–224–25"81–84cmUK 8SUS 2–426–27"85–88cmUK 10S–MUS 4–627–28"89–92cmUK 12MUS 6–829–30"93–96cmUK 14LUS 10–1231–32"97–101cmUK 16XLUS 12–1433–34"102–106cmUK 18XXLUS 14–1635–36"107–112cm

These are guidelines rather than guarantees — individual styles vary. Always check the individual product's size chart, which AE includes on every product page, and pay attention to reviews mentioning fit. Customers are usually very vocal if something runs large or small.

The Jeans — AE's Real Superpower

If there's one thing American Eagle does brilliantly, it's denim. They offer a genuinely impressive range of fits, and they've put proper thought into how each one is constructed. The key fits to know:

  • Mom Jean: high-waisted, relaxed through the thigh — great for curvy figures; sizes up true, consider your waist measurement as your guide

  • Curvy Fit: specifically cut with extra room through the hip and thigh for a smaller waist — if you're usually a different size on top to the bottom, this range is genuinely life-changing

  • Baggy: intentionally oversized; size down one from your usual if you want it to look relaxed but not enormous

  • Super High-Waisted Skinny: runs very true to size; if you're between waist measurements, size up

  • Straight: their most consistently true-to-size cut — the safest starting point if you're new to the brand

💡 Stylist's tip: The AE Curvy Fit jeans genuinely changed how I think about high street denim. I'm a size bigger on the hip than the waist, and I've been trying to find jeans that acknowledge that fact for years. If you're the same, don't scroll past them.

What About Aerie — AE's Lingerie and Loungewear Line?

Post Image

Aerie is American Eagle's sub-brand covering underwear, bras, swimwear, and loungewear — and it's worth knowing separately because it has a slightly different sizing philosophy. Aerie is famously size-inclusive (they were one of the first brands to publicly commit to un-retouched advertising, which I still respect enormously) and their sizing reflects that. Key things to know:

  • Bras: Aerie uses standard UK-style bra sizing (32A, 34B etc.) — a direct conversion, no faff

  • Underwear: tends to run slightly generous — most UK shoppers find their usual size or one down works best

  • Loungewear and joggers: sizing is relaxed and consistent; go by your usual letter size

  • Swimwear: true to US sizing; follow the waist and bust measurements on the product page rather than guessing

Alternatives to American Eagle for Similar Vibes

Can't get the sizing to work, or want to compare before committing? These brands offer a similar casual-cool, denim-forward aesthetic with UK-friendly sizing:

  • Abercrombie & Fitch — AE's closest competitor in terms of aesthetic and quality; their denim has improved enormously in recent years and sizes are very consistent. Slightly more elevated price point but worth it

  • Hollister — actually part of the same parent company as Abercrombie; brilliant for relaxed denim and casual jersey pieces at a more accessible price. Sizing runs US-standard so the same conversion rules apply

  • Levi's — the gold standard for accessible denim; sizes by waist and inseam measurement just like AE, so no conversion needed. Iconic for good reason

  • Urban Outfitters — great for a similar youthful, casual vibe with far more UK sizing familiarity; their denim section has brilliant own-label options alongside curated brands

  • Banana Republic — if you love AE's smarter casual pieces (the chinos, the tailored trousers), Banana Republic does a more polished take with excellent UK size guidance

  • New Look — don't underestimate them for casual denim basics at a brilliant price point; their jeans have had consistently strong reviews and they size straightforwardly in UK sizing

  • River Island — great range of denim fits and very size-inclusive; true UK sizing throughout so there's zero conversion required

Two brilliant independent brands I'd also throw into the mix:

  • Nobody's Child — a London-based sustainable brand that does beautiful relaxed denim and casual separates in true UK sizing. Frequently featured in Grazia and Stylist for good reason — they're genuinely good

  • Denim Fox — a small UK independent doing made-to-measure denim for women who've given up finding jeans that actually fit. Pricier, but if you're between sizes, it's transformative

Tips for Shopping American Eagle from the UK

A few practical things worth knowing before you order:

  • Shop via ASOS — ASOS stocks a good range of AE denim and converts all sizes into UK sizing automatically, making it significantly less stressful

  • Check the returns policy before ordering direct from AE's website — international returns can be costly, so knowing your size in advance saves a lot of hassle

  • Read the reviews — AE customers are detailed and honest; filtering by height and weight similar to yours gives you genuinely useful fit intel

  • Watch for their sales — AE regularly runs significant discounts and the quality-to-sale-price ratio is exceptional, particularly on denim
