BRAND SIZING GUIDE
By Ella Blake | Tellar Fashion Hub
Anthropologie generally runs true to size for a US brand, but because it uses American sizing, UK shoppers need to size down by one — so if you're a UK 12, you'll typically want a US 8. That said, the brand spans dozens of own-label and third-party lines all living under the same roof, and sizing can vary quite noticeably between them. I've ordered a size 8 dress from one Anthropologie label that fitted like a dream, then picked up the same size from another and found myself swimming in it. Here's how to navigate it properly.
Understanding the Anthropologie Size System
Unlike a single-label brand, Anthropologie is more like a beautifully curated department store. You'll find pieces from their in-house lines — like Maeve, Holding Horses, and Pilcro — alongside third-party brands such as Free People, Velvet, and others. Each of those labels has its own sizing and cut, which is why two Anthropologie dresses in the same size can fit very differently.
The general baseline: Anthropologie US sizes run roughly one to two sizes larger than UK sizing, depending on the label. Use the conversion table below as your starting point, then always cross-reference with the garment measurements listed on the product page.

Which Anthropologie Lines Run True to Size?
This is genuinely the most useful thing I can tell you, because not all Anthropologie labels are created equal when it comes to fit:
Maeve — generally runs true to size in the US conversion. Lovely feminine silhouettes; the midi dresses in particular are consistently well cut and flattering across a range of figures.
Pilcro — their denim line. Runs slightly small, especially through the hips and thighs. Size up one if you're between sizes, and check the rise carefully — they tend to be high-waisted.
Holding Horses — relaxed, boho-leaning pieces that tend to be cut more generously. You may find you can size down here, especially in flowy blouses and wrap styles.
Cloth & Stone — relaxed linen and cotton basics. These run true to size but are intentionally oversized in their silhouette, so bear that in mind before sizing up.
Free People (stocked at Anthro) — notoriously inconsistent. Always check individual product measurements. I've had a Free People top that fit me three sizes smaller than expected. Their size guide is almost decorative at this point.
Fit Tips by Garment Type
Aside from knowing the labels, it also helps to know which garment categories tend to be more or less reliable at Anthropologie:
Dresses — Anthropologie does some of the most beautiful dresses on the market, and most styles are cut with a flattering waist emphasis. Go by your bust measurement first, then consider the waist. If you're fuller on the hip, size up and belt.
Denim & trousers — always size up one in the US conversion, especially in Pilcro. Anthropologie jeans are cut for a longer leg, so if you're petite, factor in hemming.
Knitwear & jumpers — generally very true to size and often cut slightly more generously, which is welcome. These are some of their most reliably fitting pieces.
Blazers & tailoring — go by your shoulder measurement above all else. The tailoring is usually good, but the shoulders can run narrow on some styles.
Swimwear — size up. Always. Just do it.
Petite, Regular and BHLDN: Extra Things to Know

Anthropologie offers petite sizing across many of their lines, which is genuinely useful if you're under 5'4" — the proportions are adjusted across the length of the torso and hem, not just scaled down, which makes a real difference. If you're petite and ordering standard sizing, you'll almost certainly need to hem trousers and may find dresses sit lower on the waist than intended.
Anthropologie also owns BHLDN, their bridal and occasion line. BHLDN sizing runs small — often two US sizes smaller than standard Anthropologie — so if you're browsing their occasion dresses (which are absolutely gorgeous, for the record), treat the sizing as completely separate and go by measurements only.
Where to Find a Similar Aesthetic at Different Price Points
Anthropologie sits in that satisfying mid-to-premium sweet spot, but if you want to build a wardrobe with similar boho-romantic energy at various price points, here's where I'd shop:
Monsoon — endlessly underrated. Brilliant prints, flattering midi silhouettes, and a very similar romantic-bohemian aesthetic at a much friendlier price. Their sizing is consistent and reliable, which makes a very pleasant change.
White Stuff — relaxed, print-led, great quality for the price. Perfect for the laid-back Anthropologie shopper who wants something a bit more understated.
Fat Face — especially strong for knitwear, casual dresses, and weekend dressing with a boho edge. Their sizing is generous and reliable.
Oliver Bonas — one of the high street's best-kept secrets for that slightly whimsical, artsy aesthetic. Great jewellery and accessories to complement the look too.
Boden — for the classic, print-loving Anthropologie customer who wants brilliant quality and unfailingly accurate sizing. Their fit notes are some of the best on any website.
Hush — beautifully relaxed, considered pieces with a quiet luxury feel. Understated where Anthropologie is maximalist, but they share the same love of natural fabrics and easy dressing.
Joules — print-heavy, colour-loving, and great for the outdoorsy Anthropologie devotee. Sizing is consistent and they do excellent extended sizing too.
Independent brands to know:
Peregrine — a brilliant British independent specialising in ethically made knitwear and casual pieces with real personality. If the relaxed, artisanal side of Anthropologie is what draws you in, Peregrine is worth bookmarking immediately.
Collectif — a UK independent with a devoted following for its vintage-inspired dresses and separates. Bold prints, brilliant fit across a wide size range, and that same sense of joyful, unapologetic femininity that Anthropologie does so well.
The Golden Rule for Anthropologie Shopping
Measure yourself properly — bust, waist, hips — and use Anthropologie's garment measurements rather than just the size label. The website lists them on most product pages and they are genuinely useful. When in doubt between two sizes, consider which part of your body is hardest to alter and size for that. A dress that fits across the shoulders and bust can be taken in at the waist; one that's tight across the hips is much harder to fix.
