Hush Sizing: Does It Run True to Size?

Author: Stylist at TellarDate: 2026

Here's the short answer: Hush runs large – particularly in tops, knitwear, and anything with a relaxed silhouette. If you're shopping Hush for the first time, size down in most categories. Jeans and outerwear are the exception – those tend to sit closer to true to size. But because the brand's entire identity is built around a deliberately slouchy, oversized aesthetic, what feels "big" in Hush is often entirely intentional. The key is knowing which pieces to size down in, and which ones to wear as labelled.

I've been a Hush customer for a few years now and I'll admit I got it wrong the first couple of times. I ordered a sweatshirt in my usual size 12 and it arrived looking like something I'd borrowed from a significantly taller and broader partner. I initially thought it was a fault. It wasn't – that's just Hush. Once I understood the brand's logic and started sizing down in the soft pieces, everything clicked. Their knitwear in a size 10 is now one of my most-worn items. It's a brilliant brand once you crack the code.

Why Hush Has a Reputation for Running Large

Hush is a premium British lifestyle brand founded in 2003, built around the idea of effortless, wearable style – cashmere-soft loungewear, easy weekend dresses, relaxed denim, and beautifully draped knitwear. That relaxed, unfussy ethos runs straight through the fit of their clothes. Dropped shoulders, cocoon silhouettes, wide-leg cuts and oversized hems are part of the brand's DNA. The brand itself acknowledges this on their website, noting they love the "oversized look" and that some styles are specifically designed to that aesthetic.

The upshot: if you come to Hush expecting the precise, body-skimming cut of, say, Reiss or Me&Em, you're going to be surprised. This isn't a brand that nips in at the waist unless a style specifically does so. It's a brand that wants you to look relaxed and cool – which is a valid and glorious thing to want from your wardrobe. You just need to shop it accordingly.

Category-by-Category Sizing Breakdown

This is genuinely the most useful way to shop Hush, because the sizing varies quite dramatically depending on what you're buying:

  • Tops, sweatshirts and T-shirts – Size down. These are consistently reported as coming up large, and many reviewers note they also come up shorter in length than expected. If you're between a 10 and 12, go for the 10. If you're tall and need the length, check reviews first.

  • Knitwear and jumpers – Size down. A style that looks enormous on the hanger will often look intentionally slouchy and brilliant in a size smaller than your usual. That's the point. If you prefer a neater, more classic fit, go down two sizes.

  • Dresses – It depends on the style. Wrap and shirt dresses are more forgiving; fitted midi dresses tend to be closer to true to size. Read the individual product notes – Hush is actually quite good at flagging fit specifics on their product pages.

  • Jeans and trousers – Much closer to true to size, but pear shapes in particular may find the waistband very generous relative to the hips. If that's you, try a belt or size down and go for styles with a bit of elastane for comfort.

  • Lounge sets and joggers – Can come up quite large. Size down, especially if you don't want to swim in them.

  • Coats and jackets – Generally true to size and cut with layering ease built in. Your usual size should work well here.

A Note on Length

One thing that catches people out with Hush is length in the body. Tops and sweatshirts in particular can run shorter than you might expect, which is fine if you're pairing them with high-waisted trousers, but worth knowing if you prefer your tops to hit the hip. The brand does offer some varied trouser lengths, which is genuinely helpful – but for tops, checking the reviews section for comments on length is always worth doing before you buy.

Hush Size Guide (UK)

Hush runs from UK 4 to UK 18. Their sizing broadly aligns with standard UK sizing, but remember – the cut of most pieces is relaxed, so a size 12 in Hush will look and feel bigger than a size 12 elsewhere.

My Honest Style Verdict on Hush

Post Image

If you're a fan of that effortless, slightly undone look – think weekend brunch in a cashmere jogger set, or a beautifully soft wrap dress with trainers – Hush genuinely delivers. The quality of the fabric is noticeably good for the price, and the colour palette is consistently wearable. It's a brand that photographs brilliantly and actually wears even better.

Where it gets tricky is if you're curvy or petite, or if you want clothes that do some work in terms of shaping. Hush doesn't really do "flattering" in the traditional, cinched-waist sense – it does easy and elegant. If that's your vibe, you'll love it. If you're looking for something that defines your shape, you might find it a bit shapeless.

My personal rule for Hush: size down in anything soft, size true in anything structured. Read the individual product descriptions carefully – they're actually quite honest about the intended fit.

High Street & Premium Alternatives to Hush

If you love the Hush aesthetic but want to explore similar labels – or need something at a slightly different price point – here's where I'd look:

  • White Stuff – Relaxed, colourful, and wonderfully British. Very similar customer base to Hush, with a slightly more playful print palette. Good sizing consistency and a brand that genuinely suits real women's bodies.

  • Fat Face – Casual, coastal and comfortable. If you love Hush's weekend-dressing vibe, Fat Face is worth exploring – particularly for knitwear and casual dresses. Very true to size.

  • Boden – Witty prints, great fabrics and solid quality. Sits at a similar price point to Hush but is generally cut to flatter more traditional shapes. True to size and a reliable favourite.

  • Jigsaw – More tailored than Hush but shares that sense of quiet, understated polish. If you want a Hush-adjacent brand with a sharper edge, Jigsaw is excellent and sizing is very consistent.

  • Whistles – Premium high street at its best. More structured than Hush, but brilliant for dresses and trousers. If Hush feels a bit too shapeless for you, Whistles hits the same sophisticated note with more definition.

  • The White Company – Incredibly close in ethos to Hush – soft fabrics, classic colour palette, relaxed silhouettes. If you're a Hush fan you almost certainly know The White Company already, and if you don't, go immediately.

  • Mint Velvet – Relaxed but a touch more trend-led than Hush. Great for anyone who loves the easy elegance of Hush but wants slightly more statement pieces in the mix.

  • Seasalt Cornwall – Sustainable, coastal and beautifully made. If you love Hush's casual knitwear and easy dresses, Seasalt offers a very similar feel with a strong eco conscience. Sizes consistently true to size.

Two Independent Brands Worth Discovering

If you're building a wardrobe of relaxed, considered pieces and want to go slightly off the beaten track:

  • Beaumont Organic – A British sustainable womenswear brand that makes genuinely beautiful, relaxed clothes from organic fabrics. Think linen dresses, easy wide-leg trousers, and soft knits in a muted, wearable palette. Very Hush in feel, but with stronger ethical credentials and an even quieter, more pared-back aesthetic. Excellent quality. Their sizing is true to UK sizing, unlike Hush.

  • Wyse London – Founded by former fashion editor Marielle Wyse, this indie label does bold Breton tops, easy knitwear and classic French-girl staples that are brilliant quality. The sizing is standard UK sizing throughout, the pieces are beautifully made and the vibe is relaxed-chic done with real conviction. A fantastic discovery if you haven't come across them.

Shopping Hush? Get Your Size Right First Time

The biggest mistake people make with Hush is assuming their usual size will apply across the board. It won't. A size 12 in Hush knitwear fits nothing like a size 12 in Hush jeans – and neither fits quite like a size 12 elsewhere. Ordering multiple sizes and returning the rest is costly, wasteful, and frankly a bit exhausting.
