Jeggings vs Leggings: Which Is On Trend for 2027?

Leggings win 2027 — but only the structured, matte, properly opaque kind, worn as trousers rather than gym kit. Jeggings stay niche. They are not dead, and the slim-denim revival coming off the Spring 2027 runways has given them a narrow route back, but the version that returns is a real stretch-denim skinny with a proper waistband and hardware, not the flimsy printed-on jean of 2012. If you want one pair of skinny-legged bottoms to carry you through next year, buy the leggings. If you want denim, buy denim.
What's actually changed: the runway evidence
The slim silhouette is back at the top of the market. Trend data platform Tagwalk recorded a 163% rise in skinny-jean tagging for spring 2027 versus the same season a year earlier, with Prada, Celine and Dior leading it — and a predicted knock-on surge in womenswear. Interest was first sparked by Jonathan Anderson's slim denim at Dior.
But hold your nerve before you panic-buy. The same reporting notes forecasters still class skinny jeans as a declining style in Europe, and expect the shape to remain a fashion statement for the earliest adopters rather than a mass uniform. Baggy, straight, boot-cut and barrel all continue to sit alongside it. In other words: slim is directional, not compulsory.
Leggings, meanwhile, have quietly done the thing jeggings never managed — they've been accepted as clothing. Chocolate brown, deep charcoal and black opaque styles are now worn with knee-high boots and kitten heels, not just trainers. Stirrup styles have returned. Boot-cut and flared "yoga flare" versions are everywhere, cut in heavier, cleaner fabric than the early-2000s originals. Split-leg styles, however, have had their moment and are on the way out.
The actual difference (and why it matters)
Jeggings — a legging cut and constructed to imitate jeans. Usually a high cotton-elastane blend, often with fake pockets, fake fly and printed seams. Pull-on. No structure.
Leggings — no pretence at being denim. Judged purely on fabric weight, opacity, waistband and how they hold shape at the knee after four hours.
Stretch skinny jeans — real denim with 2–3% elastane, a functioning fly, real pockets, real rivets. This is where the trend is actually heading.
The reason jeggings struggle isn't snobbery. It's that a garment pretending to be something else gets judged against that thing — and loses.
My own wins and fails, honestly
My worst was around 2012. I wore a pair of dark indigo jeggings to a client presentation, fully convinced they read as jeans. They did not. Under fluorescent office lighting the printed seams looked exactly like what they were, and the knees had bagged by lunchtime. I have never forgotten the feeling of standing up and realising the fabric had given up before the meeting had.
The win came far more recently. A pair of thick, matte, chocolate-brown leggings, worn with a fine-knit polo tucked in, a long camel wool coat and flat knee-high boots. Photographed on a shoot day, and three people asked where the trousers were from. That's the whole trick: nobody should be able to identify the fabric from ten feet away.
My non-negotiable test
Sit down on a hard chair, cross your legs, then stand and look at the knee. If the fabric has held its shape, buy them.
Bend forward in front of a mirror in daylight. Any hint of transparency and they are gym-only, whatever the label says.
Pinch the waistband. If it rolls under the hand, it will roll all day.
How to style each for 2027
Leggings, worn as trousers
Go for chocolate brown, ink navy, deep olive or charcoal before black. Colour is what lifts them out of activewear.
Weight matters more than brand. Anything under roughly 250gsm will look like leggings; heavier reads as trousers.
Structure on top, always — a blazer, a stiff trench, a boxy leather jacket. Never a slouchy jumper with a slouchy legging.
Footwear does the heavy lifting: knee-high boots, sharp loafers, a kitten heel. Trainers pull the whole look back to the gym.
Stirrups with flats are the fashion-forward option. Long-line boot-cut is the safer, more flattering one.
Jeggings, if you're keeping them
Buy the heaviest denim-blend weight you can find and avoid anything with printed detailing.
Tuck them into boots. Full stop. The ankle is where cheap jeggings betray themselves.
Keep the top half long and covering — a longline knit, a shirt worn open over a vest.
Treat them as travel and weekend wear, not office wear. That's where they're genuinely brilliant.
Where to shop: my picks

High street
Marks & Spencer — the most reliable British high-street jegging, consistently praised in press round-ups for shaping panels and a waistband that doesn't roll.
Uniqlo — their Ultra Stretch legging trousers are the benchmark for opaque, matte, trouser-adjacent legwear at a low price.
Hush — brushed, heavyweight leggings in genuinely wearable colours. This is the brand I recommend most often to clients nervous about opacity.
Sweaty Betty — the Power legging remains the British sculpting standard; the squat-proof fabric translates well to everyday wear in dark shades.
Mint Velvet — strong on the elevated casual end, with a good eye for chocolate and slate tones rather than gym black.
Seasalt Cornwall — softer, roomier, more forgiving cuts in natural fibre blends; excellent for anyone who finds sculpting fabrics oppressive.
Boden — their stretch skinnies sit right in the middle of the jegging-to-real-denim spectrum, with proper hardware.
Lululemon — Align for comfort, Wunder Train for structure. Priced high for the high street, but the resale value is telling.
Next — broadest size and leg-length range of anyone here, which matters enormously for a fitted leg.
Premium
Me&Em — superb technical fabrics and the best waistbands in this bracket. Their slim trousers do the legging job without looking like one.
AGOLDE — if you're moving from jeggings to real denim, this is the transition. Rigid-feeling stretch that holds shape.
Paige — the most forgiving premium stretch denim on the market, and a stronger fit through the hip than most.
Baukjen — quietly excellent responsible-fabric leggings and slim trousers in adult colours.
Sézane — not a legging brand, but their slim denim gives you the silhouette with far more polish.
Luxury & designer
Totême — the reference point for pared-back Scandinavian slim trousers; fabric weight is exceptional.
Max Mara — their stretch jersey trousers are effectively the luxury legging, and they last decades.
Joseph — the original stretch trouser house. If you want one slim pair for life, start here.
By Malene Birger — strongest on colour and texture if plain black feels flat to you.
Two independents worth knowing
E.L.V. Denim — the East London label making luxury denim from 100% upcycled material, designed and produced within a few miles of its Dalston atelier. Every pair is genuinely one of a kind. If you want slim denim with a conscience, this is it.
Silou London — a small British label making sculpting, non-toxic leggings in Portugal and Lithuania. Beautifully tailored panelling and far more elegant than most activewear.
Fit is the whole game with a fitted leg
Here's the uncomfortable truth: with skinny-legged bottoms there is nowhere to hide. A centimetre out at the waist or hip and the entire look collapses. And sizing between the brands above is wildly inconsistent — the same body can be three different sizes across a high-street legging, a premium jean and a luxury stretch trouser.

The verdict
For 2027, buy the leggings — heavyweight, matte, coloured, worn with boots and structure. Keep two pairs of jeggings for travelling and long weekends, and replace anything thin or printed with a real stretch skinny instead. The slim silhouette is coming back, but it's coming back in proper denim. Buy accordingly, and check your size first.
