Jil Sander Sizing: Does It Run True to Size?

Yes — Jil Sander runs true to size, but with one important caveat: the brand's precision-cut, architectural silhouettes leave almost no ease, so if you're between sizes, you should size up. This is a house where fit is everything, and understanding how their sizing works before you buy will save you a very expensive mistake.

I'll be honest — the first Jil Sander piece I ever bought (a beautifully structured white blazer, on sale, absolutely not my budget) arrived and I could barely get it across my shoulders. I'd ordered my usual size and forgotten the golden rule: luxury minimalism is not forgiving. It's precise. It is architecture for the body. The remake was the right size and remains the most elegant thing I own — but the lesson stuck. Let me save you the hassle.

How Jil Sander Sizes Its Clothes

Jil Sander uses Italian/European sizing throughout — so you'll see numbers like 36, 38, 40, 42 and 44 on garment labels. Here's how those map to UK sizing as a general guide:

  • IT 36 = UK 8

  • IT 38 = UK 10

  • IT 40 = UK 12

  • IT 42 = UK 14

  • IT 44 = UK 16

That said, Jil Sander's cuts sit close to the body — particularly in tailored pieces. Unlike some Italian luxury houses that size generously, Jil Sander is cut to the centimetre. If you have any doubt about where you fall between two sizes, always go up, especially in outerwear and structured trousers.

Jil Sander Tops, Blouses & Shirts

Tops and shirts at Jil Sander are generally true to size, but pay close attention to the shoulder seam — that's where the precision really shows. The shoulder point should sit exactly at the edge of your shoulder. If you have broader shoulders, or you're fuller across the bust, size up without hesitation. The clean lines of a Jil Sander shirt only work when the fit is correct. A size too small and it looks strained; a size too large and that beautiful minimalism collapses into shapelessness. Neither is the point.

Jil Sander Trousers & Skirts

This is where sizing trips people up most. Jil Sander tailored trousers are cut slim and straight with minimal seat room. They're designed for a lean, elongated silhouette — stunning on the right body, uncomfortable on a curvier one if you haven't sized up. If you're fuller at the hip or thigh, I'd recommend going up one, sometimes two sizes, particularly in the tighter-cut styles. Interestingly, the waistband on many styles runs slightly smaller than you'd expect for the hip size — so factor that in too.

Skirts follow a similar rule: true to size at the waist for most, but check the hip measurement carefully on any A-line or pencil cut.

Jil Sander Dresses

Jil Sander dresses are a thing of beauty — but again, the minimal construction means there's nowhere to hide if the fit is off. Shift and column dresses in particular are cut to graze the body without room to spare. I'd say true to size if you fall neatly into a UK size; size up if you're between sizes or carry any volume across the bust or hips. The brand occasionally offers slightly more relaxed drop-shoulder styles — those you can take in your usual size more confidently.

Jil Sander Knitwear & Casual Pieces

Post Image

This is the one area where Jil Sander is more forgiving. Their knitwear — particularly the fine-gauge wool and cashmere pieces — is often cut with a subtle oversized or boxy intention. Here, stick to your true size or even size down if you want a fitted look. If you enjoy the oversized aesthetic (which is very on-brand for Jil Sander right now under Lucie and Luke Meier's direction), your usual size will work perfectly.

Jil Sander Coats & Jackets

Outerwear is where I'd be most cautious. Jil Sander coats are architectural masterpieces — cocooning, structured, often with unconventional proportions. Most are designed to be worn over just a light layer, so the ease isn't built in the way it might be at Burberry or Max Mara. True to size if you're layering over basics. Size up if you want comfort or need to accommodate a chunky knit underneath. The structured blazers in particular — true to size, but that shoulder fit really matters (see above).

Where to Shop If Jil Sander Is Out of Budget

Jil Sander is undeniably a luxury investment — but the minimalist aesthetic it champions is absolutely achievable at other price points. Here's where I'd look, depending on your budget:

  • Massimo Dutti — The closest high street match for Jil Sander's precision tailoring. Their structured trousers and blazers in particular nail the minimal aesthetic at a fraction of the price. Always worth checking for their premium linen and wool pieces.

  • Reiss — Brilliant for clean-lined dresses and well-cut tailoring. Their outerwear has a similar architectural confidence to Jil Sander at a very accessible price point.

  • Me&Em — A consistent favourite of mine for elevated British minimalism. Their knitwear and tailored trousers rival pieces twice the price, and the sizing is reliably consistent.

  • Whistles — Quietly excellent for minimal, grown-up dressing. Their blouses and shift dresses carry the same restrained elegance that Jil Sander is known for.

  • Jigsaw — One of the best high street options for investment-feel minimal pieces. Their coats in particular punch well above their weight.

  • Hobbs — For tailored workwear with a clean, precise edge. Their suiting and structured dresses channel that Jil Sander spirit without the designer price tag.

  • COS — Obvious, perhaps, but genuinely brilliant for Scandi-influenced minimal fashion. If you love Jil Sander's silhouette language, COS is your high street soulmate.

  • Arket — Increasingly impressive for elevated basics and minimal tailoring. Their outerwear especially has a real design sensibility to it.

For something a little more left-field and independent, I'd also recommend:

  • Filippa K — A Swedish brand that genuinely competes with Jil Sander on design philosophy. Beautifully cut, sustainably minded, and obsessively minimal. Their tailored trousers and knitwear are exceptional quality for the mid-luxury price.

  • Envelope 1976 — A Copenhagen-based label making some of the most quietly beautiful minimal pieces around. Lower profile than the big Scandi names, but the quality and precision is outstanding. Worth discovering if you haven't already.
