Modal fabric—complete with styling advice, best brands

Author: Stylist at TellarDate: 2025

1. What Is Modal Fabric?

Modal is a regenerated cellulose fibre made from beech tree pulp. Part of the rayon family, but with improved durability, moisture-wicking, and softness over standard viscose. It's prized for its silky feel, excellent drape, and vibrant colour retention.

2. Is Modal Eco-Friendly?

Modal can be sustainable—but only when produced responsibly:

  • 🌳 Made from regenerative beech in managed forests

  • 💧 Low water usage, significantly less than cotton

  • ♻️ Closed‑loop production (e.g., Lenzing), recapturing most solvents

  • 🍂 Biodegrades naturally, unlike synthetics

Caveat: Environmental benefits only apply when the factory is transparent, certified, and solvent-managed. Premium lines like Lenzing Modal set the gold standard.
