1. What Is Modal Fabric?
Modal is a regenerated cellulose fibre made from beech tree pulp. Part of the rayon family, but with improved durability, moisture-wicking, and softness over standard viscose. It's prized for its silky feel, excellent drape, and vibrant colour retention.
2. Is Modal Eco-Friendly?
Modal can be sustainable—but only when produced responsibly:
🌳 Made from regenerative beech in managed forests
💧 Low water usage, significantly less than cotton
♻️ Closed‑loop production (e.g., Lenzing), recapturing most solvents
🍂 Biodegrades naturally, unlike synthetics
Caveat: Environmental benefits only apply when the factory is transparent, certified, and solvent-managed. Premium lines like Lenzing Modal set the gold standard.
3. Modal Compared to Other Fabrics
Fabric | Softness | Wrinkle Resistance | Eco Potential |
---|---|---|---|
Modal | Very high | Excellent | High (if certified) |
Cotton | High | Moderate | Low (unless organic) |
Viscose | High | Moderate | Variable |
Lyocell/Tencel | Very high | Excellent | Very high (closed loop) |
