Style Choices for a Night Out: What to Actually Wear (and What to Leave in the Wardrobe)

Let's cut straight to it: a great night out outfit makes you feel effortlessly confident the moment you leave the house — not self-conscious or like you've tried too hard. Getting that balance right is genuinely one of the trickier style briefs there is, but once you crack your formula, you'll use it on repeat. I've been helping women dress for nights out for years, and I'll be honest — I've also had my fair share of disasters. There was the silk slip dress I convinced myself was "edgy" that spent the entire evening sliding off my shoulder, and the sky-high heels I wore to a bar with cobblestones. Lesson firmly learned. Here's what actually works.

Know Your Night Before You Choose Your Outfit

This sounds obvious, but it's genuinely the step most people skip. A cocktail bar calls for something different from a favourite restaurant, a rooftop terrace, or a late-night club. Before you even open your wardrobe, ask yourself:

  • Are we eating? (Fitted waistbands are your enemy here — trust me.)

  • Will there be dancing?

  • Is it a smart, intimate venue or a lively, packed bar?

  • What time will you actually be home?

These answers will shape everything — from silhouette to heel height to how much skin you want to show. I always think of "night out dressing" as three distinct camps: the elevated dinner look, the cocktails-and-dancing look, and the smart-casual drinks look. Each has its own rules.

The Elevated Dinner Look

For a proper sit-down dinner — whether that's a birthday celebration or a date — you want polish without being overdressed. This is where Reiss absolutely earns its place in your wardrobe; their tailored blazer dresses and sleek midi skirts are made for exactly this occasion. Me&Em is another one I keep going back to for dinner dressing — their fabrics are genuinely luxurious and the cuts are flattering in a way that doesn't feel fussy.

Go for:

  • A fluid wide-leg trouser in satin or crepe — elegant and incredibly comfortable to sit in

  • A wrap dress in a rich jewel tone (emerald, burgundy and deep teal are all doing well this season)

  • A longline blazer over a simple camisole and tailored trousers — a formula that never, ever fails

Ted Baker is excellent for occasion-ready dresses if you want something with a bit more embellishment — their beaded and lace detailing is consistently tasteful rather than overdone.

The Cocktails and Dancing Look

Right, this is where you can have a bit more fun. The brief here is: looks incredible but you can actually move. Shorter hemlines work brilliantly — a mini skirt or a bodycon midi that allows a proper stride. All Saints is consistently good for this kind of piece; their leather-look mini skirts and rocker-adjacent slip dresses have exactly the right amount of edge without tipping into costume territory.

For the nights when I want to look dressed up but still be able to hit the dancefloor with abandon, I always come back to a sequin co-ord or a statement wide-leg jumpsuit. Mango does brilliant party-ready pieces at a price that doesn't make you feel nervous about spilling your drink, and Cos consistently delivers architectural shapes that look expensive and move beautifully.

A few tips that have genuinely saved me:

  • If you're wearing heels, block heels or kitten heels > stilettos for long nights. Your future self will thank you.

  • A mini bag keeps you hands-free and forces you to pack only the essentials.

  • Double-sided tape is non-negotiable if you're wearing anything low-cut or wrap-style.

The Smart-Casual Drinks Look

This is arguably the trickiest category because the brief is so undefined. "Smart casual" can feel like a trap. My go-to formula: one dressed-up piece anchors the look, everything else stays relaxed. So — a really beautiful silk blouse with dark jeans and heeled boots. Or a tailored trouser with a simple fitted top and interesting jewellery.

Whistles is brilliant for the elevated blouse — their silk and satin styles sit beautifully and come in understated prints that feel special without being loud. Phase Eight is another one to bookmark for smart-casual dressing; their occasion-wear always manages to feel wearable rather than stiff. And if you're leaning into the jeans-and-heels approach, Jigsaw has consistently excellent dark denim that reads as polished rather than casual.

The Independent Brands Worth Knowing

Two brands I've been recommending a lot recently for night-out dressing that you might not have come across yet:

  • Kitri — a London-based independent label making beautifully crafted occasion pieces in bold prints and rich fabrics. Their dresses are genuinely well made, fit brilliantly, and have a personality that high street brands rarely match. Perfect for a dinner or cocktail setting.

  • Damson Madder — if you want something with genuine character for a night out, this small British label does romantic, maximalist separates (think statement blouses, velvet midi skirts) that are completely distinctive. You will not turn up in the same dress as someone else.

A Note on Getting the Fit Right

Here's the thing I always come back to with clients: the best outfit in the world looks off if the fit isn't right. Night-out dressing in particular tends to involve more fitted, tailored pieces where fit really matters — and this is where so many of us get caught out ordering online. If you're trying new brands, this can be genuinely stressful. Sizing is wildly inconsistent across the high street, and what works for you in one brand can be completely different in another.

Never Guess Your Size Again — Tellar Has You Covered

This is exactly why I love Tellar.co.uk — the UK's leading free sizing tool that matches your measurements to over 1,500 brands instantly. No more ordering two sizes and sending one back. No more size guide squinting. You measure once, and Tellar does the rest.

It's incredibly simple to use:

  • Enter your measurements (bust, waist, hip) or your existing size in a brand you already know fits

  • Use the Store Size Lookup tool to get your precise size across hundreds of brands — from Cos to Reiss to smaller independents

  • It's completely free, works in-browser, and requires zero downloads
