SUMMER 2026 DRESS TRENDS
BY ELLA BLAKE — SENIOR FASHION STYLIST & FOUNDER | TELLAR · ALWAYS HONEST, UNBIASED & UNSPONSORED
The three summer dress trends that are genuinely worth buying into for 2026 are the drop-waist silhouette, the asymmetric draped dress, and the polka-dot print revival — all confirmed across multiple spring/summer runways and already landing on the high street in force.
I want to be honest with you upfront: there are roughly fourteen dress trends being called out in fashion media right now, many of which will last approximately six weeks before disappearing entirely. I have no interest in sending you off to spend money on those. What I've done instead is dig through the actual runway coverage — Balenciaga, Chloé, Victoria Beckham, Emilia Wickstead, Proenza Schouler — and filtered it down to the three that are genuinely new, genuinely wearable, and genuinely worth the investment.
These are not micro-trends. These are the ones that will still look right in September.
TREND 01
The Drop-Waist Dress — Structural, Elegant, and Quietly Brilliant
The drop-waist dress is the most elegant silhouette story of summer 2026, and one I did not see coming. It's been building quietly across the SS26 runways — Emilia Wickstead was one of the most cited references — and now it's arrived on the high street with considerably more variety and wearability than I expected.
What I love about it is the contradiction it solves. It's a structured, intentional silhouette that doesn't cling anywhere — the waist sits low at the hip rather than the natural waist, creating a fluid, almost 1920s column-like line that is somehow both relaxed and thoroughly polished. For women who want to look considered without being squeezed into anything, this dress does extraordinary work.
I tried one on in a boutique a few weeks ago — a soft ivory crepe drop-waist midi with a subtle draped skirt — and I genuinely had to stop myself buying it on the spot. The way it moved was unlike almost anything I've worn recently. It felt important, which is not something I say lightly about a dress.
The key is the length and fabric. Midi to maxi is the right territory — anything shorter risks looking costume-y. And the fabric needs to have real drape: crepe, chiffon, silk, or a quality viscose. Stiff fabric entirely kills the silhouette.
Honest verdict: this is the smartest dress investment of the season. It works for weddings, garden parties, evenings out, and smart summer occasions — and it photographs beautifully. If you buy one dress this summer, make it this one.
BEST BUYS — HIGH STREET
Coast — A natural home for this silhouette and one of the strongest high street options for occasion-ready drop-waist styles right now. Their fabric quality on special occasion pieces is consistently honest and their sizing tends to be reliable for UK shapes.
Warehouse — Often produces some of the best-value occasion dresses on the UK high street and their drop-waist edit this season is genuinely strong. Worth checking before the obvious brands — they sell out quietly and quickly.
Anthropologie — Brilliant for the more romantic, slightly more directional end of this trend. Their drop-waist dresses in particular have a quality of fabric and print that feels a league above the standard high street, and they carry the silhouette beautifully.
Oasis — One to watch for this trend specifically. Their summer occasion range has improved considerably and their drop-waist midi styles are both well-priced and genuinely pretty — good for a wedding guest look without a scary price tag.
Mango — Their Mediterranean approach to elegance suits this silhouette perfectly. Clean lines, quality drape fabrics, and a colour palette that leans into ivory, camel, and soft terracotta — the drop-waist styles this season are among their best.
Zara — As always, Zara has picked up the runway signal fast. Look specifically in their Studio and Special Edition lines for the most considered interpretations — the quality gap between mainline and Studio on a draped dress is significant.
Hobbs — For the most polished, thoroughly grown-up version of this trend. Their midi dresses are consistently well-cut and the fabric quality is above what most high street brands offer. A reliable choice for an important occasion.
PREMIUM & LUXURY
Reiss — Excellent on the clean, minimal end of this trend. Their drop-waist occasion dresses are beautifully constructed and the sizing is dependable — a strong choice if you want something that feels genuinely special without a designer price tag.
Sézane — The French label has a natural feel for this silhouette and their summer drop-waist styles have a distinctively Parisian ease. Higher price point but the quality justifies it entirely.
Emilia Wickstead — The luxury reference for this trend, full stop. Her SS26 collection made the drop-waist feel like the most important silhouette of the season. If you're dressing for a high-profile summer occasion and the budget is there, this is where to look.
TREND 02
The Asymmetric Draped Dress — One Shoulder, High Drama, Surprisingly Wearable

Draped dresses are nothing new, but what arrived on the SS26 runways at Balenciaga, Lanvin, and Chloé was a more exaggerated, confident version of asymmetric draping that felt genuinely exciting — high-low hemlines, one-shoulder necklines, dramatic fabric gathered at the waist, and that very particular quality of a dress that looks effortless but is clearly anything but.
What makes the 2026 version different from previous iterations is the restraint applied to the rest of the look. The runway styling was consistently clean — barely-there accessories, flat or barely-heeled shoes, minimal jewellery. The dress was the point. Everything else stepped back. That's an important styling principle to take away: if you're wearing an asymmetric draped dress, your accessories need to practically disappear.
I'm personally obsessed with the one-shoulder version in particular — there's something about the balance of exposed skin and dramatic structure that feels very right for summer 2026. It works on a huge range of body shapes because the asymmetry draws the eye across rather than straight down, and the draping at the waist creates a flattering softness without clinging. An underrated silhouette for anyone who wants to look extraordinary at an event without quite knowing why they look extraordinary.
Colour-wise: white, ivory, stone, cobalt blue, and deep terracotta are the palette. Avoid overly busy prints with this silhouette — the shape IS the statement and a loud print fights it.
Honest verdict: this is the most show-stopping of the three trends and the one most likely to earn you genuine compliments at an event. It requires the least effort to style — just add minimal gold jewellery and a good sandal and walk confidently.
BEST BUYS — HIGH STREET
River Island — Consistently strong on asymmetric and one-shoulder occasion styles and often underpriced for what you get. Their draped midi dresses in solid colours are a genuine best buy for this trend — the ivory and cobalt options are particularly good.
ASOS — The most size-inclusive option for this trend and their range of asymmetric draped styles is broad. Their own-brand occasion dresses at this silhouette are well-made for the price and the fit filtering makes finding the right style genuinely easy.
Missguided via ASOS — For the more dramatic, high-fashion end of the asymmetric trend at a very accessible price. Better for one-off occasions where longevity of wear matters less than impact.
Whistles — For the most elegant, thoroughly considered interpretation of this trend at the mid-high street level. Their asymmetric and one-shoulder styles are always beautifully cut — this is the option when you need to look seriously impressive.
Phase Eight — Reliable and frequently brilliant on draped occasion dresses. Their one-shoulder and asymmetric midi styles this season are some of their strongest work and the range of sizes is good. A dependable choice for a wedding or smart occasion.
Banana Republic — Often overlooked but genuinely strong on clean, well-constructed occasion dresses with architectural elements. Their asymmetric draped styles have a polished, corporate-chic quality that works brilliantly for dressier events or smart summer evenings.
Me&Em — The British brand's approach to occasion dressing is intelligent and inclusive. Their draped and asymmetric styles this season are beautifully made and the quality of fabric is notably above the standard high street. Worth the slightly higher price.
PREMIUM & LUXURY
Rixo — London's cult print and occasion dress brand and they handle asymmetric draping with a genuine creative flair. Their one-shoulder styles are consistently distinctive — not generic occasion dressing, but something people will actually remember.
Chloé — The luxury reference for draped femininity this season. Chemena Kamali's vision for the house is exactly the graceful, asymmetric, confident dressing this trend is channelling. The benchmark the high street is working from.
TREND 03
The Polka-Dot Print Revival — Playful, Graphic, and Far Chicer Than You Remember
I'll be honest: when I first started seeing polka dots come up in the trend reports for summer 2026 I rolled my eyes slightly. It felt like the kind of thing fashion magazines call a trend every three years because it fills a page nicely. Then I actually looked at the runway images — Victoria Beckham, Proenza Schouler, Phan Dang Hoang, Buttonscarves — and I completely changed my mind.
The 2026 polka dot is not the polka dot of a 1950s tea dress or a 1980s power blouse. What's arrived this season is graphic, high-contrast, and surprisingly sophisticated: large-scale dots on clean backgrounds, tonal dot prints that read almost as abstract, and the brilliantly clever two-tone monochrome dress trend that uses dot print as a textural element within a colour-blocked design. Multiple editors have flagged this as one of the most wearable print trends in recent memory, and I agree.
The key to wearing it in 2026 without looking retro is scale and simplicity. Large dots on a minimal background — think navy on ivory, black on white, cobalt on cream — feel directional and modern. Small scattered ditsy dots veer quickly into vintage territory, which is perfectly fine if that's your aesthetic, but it reads differently. Keep the rest of the outfit stripped back: clean shoes, no competing prints, uncomplicated accessories.
Honest verdict: this is the most fun of the three trends and the easiest entry point if you don't want to spend much. A great polka-dot midi at H&M or Oliver Bonas will cost a fraction of the other trend pieces and will get the most wear across a casual summer wardrobe.
BEST BUYS — HIGH STREET
Oliver Bonas — My top pick for this trend at the accessible end. Their prints are always more considered and creative than the standard high street, and their polka-dot and graphic print dresses this season are genuinely lovely — the kind of thing that doesn't look high street at all once you're wearing it.
H&M — Strong on print dresses at a very honest price and their large-scale dot options are well-executed this season. A brilliant starting point if you want to try the trend without commitment.
Monsoon — Absolutely in their element with a print trend. Monsoon's heritage is in beautiful, distinctive print work and their dot and graphic print summer dresses are some of the best-value pieces on the high street right now.
Urban Outfitters — For the cooler, slightly more retro-modern take on polka dots. Their vintage-inspired midi dresses with large graphic dots have real personality and a quality of print that feels more independent label than high street giant.
White Stuff — Quietly very good on this trend. Their print work has always been thoughtful and their polka-dot and abstract dot dresses have a warmth and personality that feels genuinely distinctive. Often overlooked, consistently worth checking.
Warehouse — Often produces excellent print dresses and their graphic dot and monochrome options are well-priced and well-made for the cost. Worth a look before they sell through.
New Look — An honest, accessible option for trying the trend without overthinking it. Their large-scale dot prints in summer wrap and midi styles represent genuinely good value and decent quality at the price point.
PREMIUM & LUXURY
Sandro — Their two-tone and monochrome dot print styles have a particularly strong retro-modern Parisian quality. One of the best interpretations of the trend at the premium level — it's been cited widely in fashion editor picks for summer 2026.
Victoria Beckham — One of the runway originators of this trend's current iteration. Her approach is graphic, high-contrast, and deeply sophisticated — the reference point when you want the fully elevated version.
TWO INDEPENDENT LABELS ABSOLUTELY WORTH KNOWING
Faithfull the Brand — An Australian-British independent with a devoted following among women who take resort dressing seriously. Their print dresses — florals, abstract motifs, graphic patterns — are consistently beautiful and the quality of fabric and construction is well above what the price suggests. They sell out fast. If you've not discovered them, this summer is the moment.
The Vampire's Wife — The London independent founded by Susie Cave that has become one of the most genuinely distinctive dress labels in British fashion. Their prints are unlike anyone else's — dramatic, slightly gothic, unmistakably artistic — and the construction quality is exceptional. Not cheap, but a dress from here will be talked about at every occasion you wear it to.
