Tom Ford Sizing: Does It Run True to Size?

Tom Ford generally runs true to size, but the brand cuts slim — particularly across tailoring, dresses and blazers — so if you're curvier, broader across the bust or like to wear your clothes with a little breathing room, sizing up is worth serious consideration. The clothes are built for a narrow, sculpted silhouette, and that's both their brilliance and their quirk.

I'll be honest — the first time I bought a Tom Ford blazer, I confidently ordered my usual size and stood there in the changing room convinced something had gone catastrophically wrong. Nothing had. It was just that Tom Ford's idea of a size 10 and mine were having a very different conversation. I swapped for a 12, and suddenly understood what all the fuss was about. Lesson learned, and one I'm very happy to pass on.

The Tom Ford Fit Philosophy

Tom Ford — both under its founder and now continuing under Peter Hawkins — has always built clothes around a very specific body ideal: long, lean, sculptural. The brand is famously anti-oversized. In a WWD interview around the Spring 2024 collection, Hawkins was clear that the brand is "done with oversize" — everything is cut to show off the body. That's great news if you love a sleek, body-conscious line. It just means you need to be precise about your measurements before you buy.

Tom Ford uses US sizing across all its clothing, even when stocked by UK retailers like Harrods, Selfridges or Net-a-Porter. So a UK 10 becomes a US 6 — and that conversion matters, because online product listings don't always flag it clearly.

Tip: Always use your body measurements rather than your usual label size when shopping Tom Ford. The sizing is precise and the construction unforgiving — in the best possible way, once you get it right.

Sizing by Garment Type

  • Blazers & Tailored Jackets: The single trickiest Tom Ford buy online. They are cut with a deeply suppressed waist and narrower shoulders, and they tend to sit snug across the bust. If you're anything other than a straight size 8–10 UK, go up one size and have it taken in at the waist if needed — a good tailor can transform it. The pay-off is extraordinary.

  • Dresses: Body-conscious by design. Wrap styles and jersey dresses are slightly more forgiving, but anything structured — a bandage-style dress, a tailored midi — runs true to the slim-cut rule. Measure your bust and hips carefully before ordering.

  • Trousers: Slim through the leg with a narrow hip. They tend to work beautifully on leaner frames. If you have a fuller hip, size up and belt or tuck — the fabric quality means it still drapes impeccably.

  • Denim: Runs closest to true to size of any Tom Ford category, but with minimal stretch. Go with your usual waist measurement in inches rather than guessing by UK size.

  • Knitwear: More generous than the tailoring. Tom Ford's cashmere and fine knits tend to be cut slightly roomier — true to size for most people, and one of the easier categories to buy online.

  • Shoes: Tom Ford footwear uses Italian sizing (EU). Heels have historically been reported by some shoppers as running slightly small — particularly older styles. Current ready-to-wear shoe lines tend to be true to size, but if you're between sizes, go up half a size to be safe.

My Honest Take on Buying Tom Ford

Here's what I tell clients who are investing in Tom Ford for the first time: treat it like bespoke. Measure yourself — bust, waist, hips — and cross-reference against the size chart before you click buy. Don't rely on what you wear in Zara or even Reiss. Tom Ford is a completely different discipline.

The good news? Once you know your Tom Ford size, you can buy with real confidence. The brand is consistent within its sizing logic. And the quality is extraordinary — the weight of the fabric, the precision of the cut, the finish on the details. A Tom Ford blazer worn well is one of those rare pieces that makes you stand differently. Taller. More intentional. Worth every penny of the sizing research.

High Street Alternatives Worth Knowing

Post Image

Tom Ford is undeniably a serious investment. If you love that sleek, structured, body-conscious aesthetic but want something a little easier on the bank account, these are the brands I'd point you towards — all chosen because they genuinely nail that refined, tailored look:

  • Reiss — The closest high street equivalent to Tom Ford's tailored precision. Their blazers and trousers are impeccably cut and consistently well reviewed for fit. A brilliant first port of call.

  • Massimo Dutti — Spanish luxury at high street prices. The fabric quality here is genuinely impressive — structured, grown-up, and built to last. A fantastic alternative for tailoring and knitwear.

  • Me&Em — British brand that has quietly become one of the best for polish and precision. Their tailored trousers and blazers are excellent, and sizing is consistent.

  • Cos — Minimalist, architectural and very well made for the price. The silhouettes are clean and modern, and they share Tom Ford's commitment to simplicity done brilliantly.

  • Whistles — Sophisticated British label with strong tailoring credentials. Great for structured dresses, blazers and evening-adjacent pieces without the luxury price tag.

  • Jigsaw — Quiet luxury before quiet luxury was a thing. Jigsaw's tailoring is understated and elegant, with excellent fabric sourcing and timeless cuts.

  • Hobbs — Particularly good for structured dresses and occasion tailoring. If you want that body-skimming, polished look for a wedding, event or office in the same spirit as Tom Ford's sensibility, Hobbs delivers.

  • Phase Eight — Brilliant for occasion-wear that shares Tom Ford's love of slinky, figure-flattering silhouettes at a fraction of the cost. Their jersey wrap dresses in particular are a wardrobe staple.

Two Independent Labels Worth Discovering

  • Galvan London — A quietly iconic independent brand specialising in silk and satin eveningwear. Editorial darling, stocked at Matches and Net-a-Porter. If you love the Tom Ford after-dark glamour but want something less recognisable, Galvan is your answer. The quality is exceptional.

  • Zeynep Arcay — A Turkish-born, London-based designer who makes exquisite body-conscious knitwear and tailoring. Her pieces have that same sculptural, skin-close quality as Tom Ford — and she's genuinely one of fashion's best-kept secrets. Stocked at Selfridges.
