What Brand of Jeans Do Celebs Wear?

The short answer: mostly Levi's, Saint Laurent, Acne Studios, A.P.C. and Tom Ford — with a raw Japanese pair from Edwin or Nudie thrown in when they're photographed off-duty. Denim is one of the few areas of menswear where the famous and the rest of us genuinely converge. A stylist dressing an actor for a press tour is choosing from the same shelves you are. The difference is almost never the brand. It's the fit, the wash and the alterations nobody sees.

Why the Same Handful of Brands Keep Appearing

Three things drive the choice, and none of them are glamorous.

  • The rise and the leg opening. Most men photographed well are wearing a mid-rise with a leg opening between 16cm and 19cm. It reads clean on camera and doesn't puddle over the shoe. Brands that get this right consistently get repeat business.

  • Wash discipline. Heavy whiskering and fake fading photograph badly under flash. The go-to washes are flat indigo, true black, or a soft, evenly-worn mid-blue.

  • Reliable sizing across seasons. A stylist ordering six pairs at short notice needs the size to behave. Brands with erratic sizing get dropped fast.

My own most useful denim lesson was a failure. Early on I put a client in a beautifully cut Italian jean, one size down, because the fabric had stretch and it looked sharp in the fitting room. Three hours of standing at a press wall later, the knees had bagged and the waist had given. Stretch denim relaxes. Rigid denim does not. That single afternoon changed how I buy jeans for everyone, including myself.

High Street: The Backbone

Levi's

The 501 and the 511 are on more famous men than every luxury brand combined. Levi's earns it: the fabric weight is honest, the rise sits where it should, and the black and rinse washes photograph cleanly. If you want the single most reliable pair of jeans in menswear, it's a rigid 501 in a dark rinse. Buy true to waist and expect it to soften, not shrink out of shape.

Uniqlo

Uniqlo's selvedge denim is made on Japanese looms and priced like a supermarket shirt. The slim-fit selvedge is the best sub-£50 jean in Britain, full stop. The trade-off is a slightly shorter rise and limited inside-leg options, so it suits men under about 6ft best.

Reiss

Where Levi's is workwear, Reiss is the smart end. Their denim is cut narrower through the thigh with a cleaner finish, which is what you want if the jean is going under a blazer rather than a hoodie. Reiss is my default recommendation for men who want to wear jeans to a nice restaurant without looking like they've come from a gig.

Independent and Boutique: Where the Quality Hides

Blackhorse Lane Ateliers

Made in Walthamstow, east London, from Japanese and Turkish selvedge. Free alterations for life and a repair service that will patch a blowout for a fraction of a new pair. The E5 relaxed tapered fit is a genuinely excellent modern jean. This is the pair that outlives the trend cycle.

Nudie Jeans

Swedish, organic cotton, and famous for free repairs at their repair shops. Nudie's dry denim breaks in with real character — the fades are yours rather than a factory's. Their Grim Tim slim fit is one of the most flattering rigid cuts on the market for a normal build.

A.P.C.

Parisian, minimal, and quietly the most influential denim brand of the last thirty years. The Petit Standard raw jean is the reference point that dozens of other brands copy. It comes rigid and unwashed and you break it in yourself, which is either a joy or an inconvenience depending on your temperament.

Edwin

Japanese denim heritage with a slightly looser, more relaxed sensibility. Their Regular Tapered cut is the fit I'd point you towards if straight-leg feels too old and slim feels too tight. Excellent fabric for the money.

Designer and Luxury: The Red-Carpet Names

Post Image

Saint Laurent

The rock-and-roll skinny black jean in a stretch-cotton blend. It is the most photographed designer denim of the past decade for a reason: it's cut extremely lean, it holds a sharp line under a leather jacket, and it looks deliberate. It is also unforgiving — this cut wants a slim leg and nothing else.

Acne Studios

Scandinavian, understated, and the brand I recommend most often to men who want the designer look without the peacocking. The River fit is a slim-tapered mid-rise that suits almost everybody. Acne's washes are subtle and grown-up.

Tom Ford

Rarely mentioned in denim conversations, but Tom Ford's jeans are cut like tailoring — a proper rise, a clean straight leg, and a finish that lets them sit comfortably with a jacket. Expensive, and worth understanding as a benchmark for what a jean can be, even if you never buy a pair.

How to Actually Wear Them

  • Get the hem right. A single, subtle break over the shoe, or no break at all. This is the difference between looking styled and looking dressed. It costs about £12 at any alterations shop and it is the highest-return spend in your wardrobe.

  • Dark on top, dark below is fine. Black jeans and a black knit is a working uniform, not a mistake. Break it with a boot in a different texture — suede, ideally.

  • One trend worth following. The leg has relaxed. Straight and tapered fits have overtaken skinny almost completely. If your last pair was bought before 2020, size up the leg opening rather than the waist.

  • Buy rigid where you can. Anything above about 3% elastane will lose its shape by the end of the day.

Find Your Exact Size Before You Buy

Here's the part nobody tells you about celebrity denim: the jeans are almost always altered. You don't have that luxury, so the size has to be right first time — and a 32" waist at Levi's is not a 32" at Acne Studios or Reiss.
