What Colour Jeans Should I Buy for Winter 2026 and Spring 2027?

Buy deep indigo first, chocolate brown second and grey third for winter 2026 — then move to pale, sun-bleached indigo and ecru for spring 2027. Red is the one statement colour genuinely worth the money.

That is the honest, unfussy answer. If you only buy one pair of jeans between now and next spring, make it a dark, clean indigo — no whiskering, no fading, no rips. It is the shade doing the most work on the autumn/winter 26 runways and on the street, and it is the only denim colour that reliably passes as smart. Everything else in this post is about what you add around it.
I have been styling denim for clients for the best part of twenty years, and the pattern is always the same: people over-buy on trend colours and under-buy on the wash that actually gets worn four times a week. So let's do this properly.
Winter 2026: Deep Indigo Is the Pair to Buy First
Dark denim has come back hard. Marie Claire's autumn/winter 26 denim report flagged the "super straight, super dark" jean as one of the season's five defining shifts, pointing to Khaite, Calvin Klein and Balenciaga all putting a slim, formal straight leg back in the spotlight after several seasons of barrel and wide-leg dominance. Who What Wear's autumn guide came to the same conclusion, with deep indigo and classic blue reading as the most wearable washes of the season.
What makes it work:
It reads as trousers, not jeans. A rinse-dark straight leg with a knife-sharp front crease will get you through most office dress codes.
It flatters everyone. No fade means no visual bulk where you don't want it.
It costs less to own. Dark denim looks expensive at £45 in a way that a light wash simply doesn't.
My one caveat, learned the hard way: raw indigo transfers. I once styled a client for a launch in a beautiful pair of unwashed Japanese selvedge and put her on a cream velvet banquette. We spent the afterparty with a damp cloth. Wash new dark denim once, cold, inside out, before it meets anything pale.
The Two Neutrals Doing the Heavy Lifting: Chocolate and Grey
If indigo is your workhorse, brown and grey are what stop your winter wardrobe looking like a uniform.
Chocolate brown
Brown denim has quietly become the smartest colour in the rail. It softens an outfit in a way black can't — black denim next to a black knit almost always looks slightly off, whereas chocolate reads deliberate. It sits beautifully with camel, cream, burgundy and forest green, which are the colours you already own.
Grey
Grey is the sleeper. Everything from pale silvery washes through to near-black charcoal is landing this season, and it functions as a black jean that doesn't fade to that miserable dishwater shade after eight washes. Think of grey as your second neutral rather than a trend buy.
What to do with black
Black jeans aren't going anywhere, but they've stopped being interesting. If you already own a decent black pair, keep them and spend your money on brown or grey instead. If you don't own any, buy a coated or waxed black rather than a flat one — it holds its colour and gives you a bit of evening mileage.
Red Jeans: The Statement Colour That's Actually Earning Its Place
Alternative denim colours are one of the AW26 stories, with purple, yellow and red all appearing on the runways at Baum und Pferdgarten, Chloé and Isabel Marant — and red in particular has already taken hold with the most-photographed women online.
Here is my fashion fail, and it is a public one. In 2012 I bought coral, mustard and cobalt skinnies in a single afternoon, wore them for roughly one season, and then quietly gave them to a charity shop in Guildford. Coloured denim earns a bad name because people buy it in the wrong cut.
The fix is simple: buy your statement colour in the most classic silhouette you own. A deep, slightly brick-toned red in a straight or relaxed leg, worn with a navy jumper and a brown loafer, looks considered. The same red in a skinny with a heel looks like 2012. That's the whole difference.
Spring 2027: Everything Gets Lighter
The pivot for spring is clear and it's the opposite of winter. London's SS27 previews point firmly towards sun-bleached indigo and off-white denim, with lighter weights and fluid, relaxed cuts replacing heavy workwear-style denim. Coloro has also named Luminous Blue — a deep, cobalt-leaning blue — as its colour of the year for 2027, which tells you the blue family is being pushed rather than abandoned.
So for spring, plan for:
Pale, sun-bleached indigo. The single most useful spring wash. Soft, slightly chalky, no heavy contrast.
Ecru and off-white. The chic alternative to a light blue. Buy a heavier weight so it isn't see-through — it's the one place where paying more genuinely shows.
Faded, dusty blue. Sits between the two and works with the softer, quieter palette forecast for the season.
Turquoise as an accent. It emerged as the standout "pop of" colour on the Copenhagen SS27 street style circuit. Take it in a top or a bag rather than a jean, unless you're very confident.
My timing advice: don't buy your pale spring pair now. I do this every year and regret it. Light denim bought in September gets worn once in a cold February, looks wrong, and then feels tired by the time April arrives. Buy dark now, buy light in March.
Where to Buy: High Street, Premium and Luxury

High street
Levi's — the reference point for a dark straight leg. The Ribcage line has become the go-to high-waisted slim for anyone wanting that sharper AW26 silhouette.
Uniqlo — unbeatable on price for a clean, dark, non-distressed jean, and their denim is made at their own Jeans Innovation Centre. The best value dark indigo on the high street.
Whistles — consistently strong on quiet, well-cut denim in the exact chocolate and grey tones this season calls for. A stylist favourite for a reason.
Sézane — the French answer to a smart straight leg. The Le Droit line is one of the most recommended straight jeans in the UK press right now, and the fit is genuinely flattering.
Massimo Dutti — the closest the high street gets to a premium finish. Excellent dark rinses and a grown-up leg line.
Hush — very good on relaxed, softer washes and the more forgiving cuts. Their sizing runs generous, which suits the looser spring shapes.
Boden — underrated for coloured denim. If you want red or a proper deep berry without going near a designer price, start here.
Mint Velvet — reliable for grey and brown denim styled for real life rather than a runway.
Nobody's Child — worth a look for lighter spring washes at a sensible price, with better sustainability credentials than most at this level.
Premium
AGOLDE — the denim label editors actually wear. Best in class for interesting washes, including the browns and off-whites you'll want for spring.
Paige — the most comfortable premium denim on the market, thanks to a slightly higher stretch content. Ideal if you want a dark straight leg you can sit in all day.
Frame — sharp, minimal, and very strong on a clean dark rinse. Le High Straight is a perennial.
Citizens of Humanity — exceptional fabric quality and colour retention. Their darks hold up over years, not months.
Me+Em — a good British option if you're tall or need a longer inside leg without tailoring.
Luxury and designer
Totême — the definitive modern straight-leg jean. Understated, beautifully weighted denim in exactly the dark and ecru shades this cycle is built around.
Max Mara — for anyone who wants denim that behaves like tailoring. Superb in a deep indigo with a matching camel coat.
Ralph Lauren — the strongest luxury option for classic Americana washes, and the place to go for a genuinely good white jean in spring.
Two independents worth knowing
E.L.V. Denim — a London label that makes new jeans entirely from discarded pairs, cut and rejoined by hand in East London. Every pair is one of a kind, and the dark contrast styles are genuinely brilliant. If you want denim nobody else has, start here.
Kings of Indigo — an Amsterdam-based, GOTS-certified denim house doing organic cotton and recycled fibres properly rather than as marketing. Excellent classic dark indigo at a mid price, and they repair what they sell.
The Colours to Skip This Cycle
Heavy whiskering and mid-blue distressing. The cleaner, more even washes are what make an outfit look current now.
Bleach-splatter and heavy rips. They date a look instantly.
Pastel colours in a skinny cut. The colour isn't the problem, the silhouette is.
