What Is Angora — And Is It Really As Itchy As Everyone Says?
Author: Stylist at TellarDate: 2026
Angora is one of the softest natural fibres you can buy — but yes, it can be itchy, and whether it is entirely depends on quality and how it's been blended. I've worn beautiful angora that felt like a cloud and I've worn cheap versions that had me discreetly scratching my collarbone all evening. The difference is everything, and once you know what to look for, you'll never make the wrong buy again.
So, What Actually Is Angora?
Angora fibre comes from the coat of Angora rabbits — not goats, which is a common mix-up (that's mohair, a whole other conversation). The fibres are incredibly fine and fluffy, which gives angora that signature soft halo — that wispy, almost cloud-like fuzz that makes a jumper look like it belongs in a French ski chalet or a very chic countryside weekend. It's been a wardrobe staple since the early 1900s and has serious old-Hollywood glamour to it. Think Grace Kelly. Think cosy but considered.
Pure angora is actually one of the softest natural fibres in existence — softer than most wool, often softer than cashmere blends at the lower end of the market. The problem? Pure angora is expensive, so most brands blend it with other fibres to cut costs. And that's where the itching starts.
Why Does Angora Sometimes Itch?
When angora is blended with cheaper wool varieties, the coarser fibres in the mix are the real culprits — the angora itself is rarely the issue
Some people have a sensitivity to animal-derived proteins in general, which can cause mild irritation regardless of quality
Fast fashion angora is typically a low percentage blend — you might be wearing 15% angora and 85% scratchy acrylic, which is basically wearing a brillo pad and calling it luxury
The shorter, broken fibres in lower-quality angora can also poke at the skin more than longer, intact fibres in premium versions
My worst angora moment? A pale pink jumper I spotted in a sale rail, looked absolutely gorgeous, wore it to a dinner party and spent the entire evening convinced I was having an allergic reaction. I wasn't. It was 20% angora, 80% unknown synthetic nightmare. Lesson learned, painfully.
How to Make Angora Less Itchy — Tricks That Actually Work

If you already own a piece and it's driving you mad, there are a few genuinely effective fixes:
The hair conditioner soak: Fill a basin with cool water and add a small squeeze of regular hair conditioner. Submerge the garment and leave for 30 minutes, then gently press out the water (never wring) and lay flat to dry. The conditioner coats the fibres and significantly softens them. I've salvaged pieces I nearly binned this way.
The freezer trick: Fold the garment into a zip-lock bag and pop it in the freezer overnight. Sounds absolutely mad, I know. The cold relaxes and softens the fibres. It works.
Wear a base layer: A fine cotton or silk vest or long-sleeved top underneath creates a barrier between the fibres and your skin. This is my go-to for days when I love the look but my skin is having none of it. It also sorts out the shedding issue — yes, angora sheds, especially when new, and especially against dark clothing.
Buy better quality: Look for angora blended with cashmere or silk rather than acrylic or low-grade wool. A higher angora percentage (40% and above) in a quality blend is usually softer, not harsher.
A Quick Word on Shedding
Angora sheds — that's just part of the deal. New pieces shed the most, and it calms down considerably after a few wears and washes. A light spritz of hairspray on the inside of the garment before wearing reduces shedding temporarily. Avoid wearing it against black trousers or a dark coat unless you're prepared to lint-roll everything within a two-metre radius.
