What Is My Size at Fila?

Fila runs true to size for most women, with a relaxed, slightly generous fit across its core sportswear and athleisure ranges — if you're between sizes, sizing down is usually the smarter move. It's one of those brands where the answer genuinely depends on what you're buying, though, so let me walk you through it properly.

A Bit About Fila

Fila is an Italian sportswear brand with roots going back to 1911 — yes, really. It started life as a textile company in the foothills of the Italian Alps before becoming the global retro-sport icon it is today. If you came of age in the nineties, you'll remember the logo plastered across tennis whites and shell suits alike. Today it sits firmly in the athleisure space, known for its chunky trainers, logo tees, tracksuits and that unmistakable F branding.

I'll be honest — I had a bit of a Fila era a couple of years back. Bought the Disruptor trainers (obviously) and then fell down a rabbit hole of their fleece zip-ups and jogger sets. The quality genuinely surprised me for the price point. But sizing? That took a bit of trial and error, which is why I wanted to write this properly.

How Does Fila Sizing Work?

Fila uses standard UK sizing across most of its womenswear, but there are a few important things to understand before you click buy:

  • Tops and sweatshirts — Fila's logo tees and sweatshirts tend to run generously. They're cut with a relaxed, oversized aesthetic in mind, especially the heritage ranges. If you prefer a more fitted look, go one size down. I'm usually a 12 and went for a 10 in their box-fit crew neck — perfect.

  • Joggers and tracksuit bottoms — these fit more true to size, but the waistband can be on the snug side if you're fuller around the hips. If you're between sizes, size up for comfort.

  • Sports bras and fitted activewear — here, Fila is genuinely true to size. The stretch is good and the support is decent for low-to-medium impact. I wouldn't necessarily wear these for a HIIT class, but for yoga, walking or the airport? Absolutely.

  • Dresses and co-ords — Fila's more fashion-forward pieces tend to run smaller in my experience. If you have a fuller bust or wider hips, definitely check the measurements rather than relying on your usual size.

Fila Trainers — What About Footwear Sizing?

The trainers are where most people come unstuck. The iconic Disruptor II runs about half a size large, so going half a size down is widely recommended — and I can confirm this from personal experience. The Ray Tracer and classic court styles tend to be more true to size.

Always check the specific trainer's reviews before ordering. Fila's footwear line is broad and sizing can vary by silhouette.

Fila Fit by Body Shape

Post Image

Fila's aesthetic leans towards that boxy, oversized nineties silhouette — which is brilliant for some body shapes and less flattering for others if you're not mindful of proportions.

  • Pear shapes — opt for fitted Fila sports bras or slimmer-cut tees on top, paired with the wider jogger or track pant below. The volume works in your favour.

  • Apple shapes — the relaxed Fila zip-ups and longer tees are genuinely brilliant here. They skim rather than cling and give a streamlined look.

  • Hourglass — you can pull off most of the range, but if you want your shape to read, go true to size or even size down in the co-ords.

  • Petite frames — the oversized silhouettes can swamp you. Stick to the XS or cropped styles where available, and the mini logo tees rather than the boxy crew necks.

Where to Shop If Fila Isn't Quite Right for You

Fila sits at a really interesting price point — accessible but with genuine heritage credentials. If the sizing isn't working for you, or you want to explore similar retro-sport and athleisure aesthetics, here's where I'd point you:

High Street & Mid-Market:

  • ASOS — massive own-brand activewear range with detailed size guides and free returns, brilliant for testing sizes before committing.

  • Urban Outfitters — stocks a great retro sportswear edit including Fila itself, plus their own UO brand which nails the nineties aesthetic.

  • Topshop (via ASOS) — the Topshop sport and leisurewear edit has been quietly excellent since relaunching, with great fit for UK body shapes.

  • H&M — their Move activewear line is surprisingly good for the price and fits consistently true to UK sizing.

  • Zara — the Zara Sport and TRF ranges are perfect if you want that elevated athleisure look. Sizing runs slightly small so go up if in doubt.

  • Hollister — great for the sporty casual look, particularly their oversized hoodies and jogger sets, and sizing is reliable.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch — their YPB activewear line is seriously underrated. Brilliant quality, runs true to UK sizes and the fit is genuinely flattering.

Premium:

  • Sweaty Betty — the benchmark for premium activewear in the UK. Sizing is consistent and their fit guides are excellent. If Fila's quality isn't quite hitting the mark for you, Sweaty Betty is the natural step up.

  • Lululemon — yes, the prices sting, but the fit is extraordinary. Lululemon runs true to size and their community reviews mean you always know what to expect. A worthwhile investment if you're activewear-serious.

Luxury & Designer:

  • Adidas by Stella McCartney — if you want the retro sport aesthetic with proper luxury credentials, this is the collection. Sizing is true to UK/EU standard and the tailoring is noticeably superior.

  • Palm Angels — for the full-on luxury streetwear version of what Fila is doing aesthetically. Sizing runs Italian (i.e. small), so go up at least one size.

Two independent brands worth knowing:

  • Adanola — a London-based activewear label that's been quietly building a cult following. The basics are exceptional, sizing is true to UK standard, and the minimalist aesthetic is far more versatile than Fila's loud branding. A brilliant find.

  • Tala — founded by Grace Beverley, this sustainable activewear brand is doing something genuinely different. Inclusive sizing, honest fit notes on every product and a strong commitment to sustainability. Sizes run true and the quality is well above the price point.
