What Is My Size at Free Society?

Free Society runs true to UK standard sizing — so your usual UK size is a solid starting point. That said, because the brand is built around relaxed, free-flowing silhouettes, many pieces are intentionally cut generously. If you're between sizes or have a fuller bust, sizing down can give you a more polished look rather than an unintentional shapeless effect.

What Is Free Society All About?

I'll be honest — Free Society was a brand I stumbled upon when I was searching for something a little different from the usual high street. The boho-leaning, relaxed aesthetic immediately caught my eye. Floaty midi dresses, wide-leg trousers, linen co-ords and tiered skirts that actually move beautifully in real life. It feels like the kind of wardrobe a very cool woman in her early forties has curated over years of travelling. Which is exactly the vibe I'm always chasing.

Free Society is a UK-based womenswear brand with a distinctly effortless, boho-romantic identity. The pieces tend to be relaxed in construction — loose waistbands, tiered hems, breezy fabrics like linen, viscose, and cotton. Which means sizing can feel a little forgiving compared to more tailored labels.

How Does Free Society Sizing Actually Work?

Free Society uses standard UK sizing from a UK 8 through to a UK 18, and in my experience, the fit is generally true to size with a relaxed ease built in. Here's what I've noticed:

  • Tops and blouses: True to size on the whole, though the breezy, gathered styles mean even if you're a 12 you might find a 10 works better if you want any shape at all.

  • Dresses: This is where Free Society really shines. The tiered and midi styles have a lovely sweep to them and because they're not structured, they are very forgiving across different body shapes. Generally stick to your usual size here.

  • Trousers and wide-leg styles: These tend to sit at the natural waist with a relaxed leg, so they can feel quite roomy through the hip. If you're petite or have a smaller frame, consider sizing down one.

  • Linen pieces: Bear in mind linen relaxes and stretches slightly after wearing, so go true to size or even consider a snugger size if the fit looks a little loose on the hanger.

My Honest Sizing Experience

I ordered a linen tiered midi skirt from Free Society last summer in my usual UK 12, fully expecting it to be perfect. It was enormous. Not unwearable, but absolutely not what the model was wearing on the website. I swapped it for a 10 and suddenly it looked intentional — that perfect, slightly relaxed fit with a bit of shape at the waist. Lesson learned: when the garment is designed to be flowing, going down a size often gives you the effortlessness the brand is going for, rather than a shapeless drape.

On the flip side, their jersey wrap dresses are genuinely great for curvier figures and I'd say sizing up is worth considering if you have a fuller bust — the wrap neckline can gap a little at a 12 if you're a D cup or above.

Shopping Tips for Free Society

Post Image

  • Always check the individual product description — some styles explicitly state "relaxed fit" or "oversized" which is your cue to size down.

  • If you're petite, look for cropped or shorter-length options as many of the midi styles are cut generously in length too.

  • For linen styles specifically, size true or down one — linen loosens with wear.

  • If in doubt between two sizes, go with the smaller for structured pieces and stick to your usual for floaty styles.

Love the Free Society Aesthetic? Here's Where Else to Shop It

If Free Society has your heart but you want more options — or you're looking to build out a full boho-relaxed wardrobe — here's where I'd send you, split by budget:

High Street

  • Anthropologie — Probably the closest in aesthetic to Free Society. Their tiered skirts, printed blouses and embroidered dresses are gorgeous, and sizing tends to run slightly generous too, so similar rules apply.

  • White Stuff — Brilliant for relaxed linen pieces and printed casual dresses. True-to-size, very wearable, great quality for the price.

  • Seasalt Cornwall — A firm favourite for casual, easy-wear pieces with a considered aesthetic. Relaxed cuts, great for the same kind of floaty, effortless wardrobe.

  • Fat Face — For linen trousers, relaxed co-ords and casual summer styling. They size true and have brilliant seasonal collections.

  • Oliver Bonas — Their womenswear range does beautiful floaty midi dresses and printed pieces at a reasonable price point. Great for the romantic-boho aesthetic.

  • Boden — Consistent sizing (true to UK throughout), brilliant for printed dresses and relaxed jersey styles. One of the most reliable brands for knowing exactly what you'll get.

  • All Saints — If you want to push the aesthetic into something a little edgier and more contemporary. Their linen and relaxed-fit pieces are excellent, though they can come up slightly slim in the shoulders.

Premium

  • Hush — Understated, beautifully made casual pieces with a relaxed fit ethos very similar to Free Society. Their linen shirts and easy trousers are exceptional.

  • Me+Em — Slightly more polished but shares that easy, effortless quality. Excellent for elevated versions of the relaxed styles Free Society does so well.

Luxury / Designer

  • Zimmermann — For those occasions when you want to truly invest in the boho-romantic aesthetic. The most exquisite fabrics and constructions in the category. Sizing does run small, so always go up one here.

  • Faithfull the Brand — An Australian label with incredible floral-print linen and relaxed womenswear. Often stocked on ASOS and at Anthropologie. Their sizing aligns with UK standard.

Two Independent Brands Worth Knowing

  • Suncoo Paris — A small French label I genuinely love recommending. Relaxed, colourful, boho-romantic pieces at an accessible price point. Available online via specialist independents. Sizing runs French (which aligns closely with UK standard — go true to size).

  • Lollys Laundry — A Danish independent brand making beautifully relaxed, printed womenswear. Their tiered skirts and loose blouses are brilliant quality and they size true to UK with a relaxed fit built in. Worth bookmarking.
