What Is My Size at Gina Tricot?

Gina Tricot runs small compared to standard UK sizing — as a general rule, you'll want to size up by one size from what you'd normally wear on the British high street. If you're a UK 10, reach for a Gina Tricot 12. It sounds simple, but I've been caught out enough times to know it's worth repeating clearly before you press "add to basket."

The brand is Swedish, launched in Gothenburg back in 1997, and it has that very Scandi approach to sizing — structured, streamlined cuts that sit closer to the body than most UK high street labels. I find their tops in particular come up noticeably smaller in the shoulders and bust. I'm usually a UK 12 across the board, but in Gina Tricot I consistently reach for a 14, especially in anything fitted or knitwear.

How Does Gina Tricot Sizing Actually Work?

Gina Tricot uses European sizing, which means their labels read differently to what you're used to in the UK. Here's a quick reference without getting into a confusing table:

  • UK 6 → Gina Tricot XS (or EU 34)

  • UK 8 → Gina Tricot XS/S (or EU 36)

  • UK 10 → Gina Tricot S/M (or EU 38) — but size up if the garment is fitted

  • UK 12 → Gina Tricot M/L (or EU 40)

  • UK 14 → Gina Tricot L/XL (or EU 42)

  • UK 16 → Gina Tricot XL/XXL (or EU 44)

That said, sizing varies quite noticeably across their different product categories. Their knitwear and jersey pieces tend to have more give, so you can often stick to your usual conversion. But their tailored trousers, structured blazers, and denim? Size up, every time. I once ordered a pair of their straight-leg jeans in what should have been my size and had to resort to lying on the bed to do them up. Lesson firmly learned.

The Fit Across Different Categories

One of the things I love about Gina Tricot is that they do a brilliant job of producing very fashion-forward pieces at an accessible price point — think current-season silhouettes, interesting textures, and great occasion pieces. But the sizing inconsistency across categories is genuinely worth knowing about before you shop.

  • Tops & Blouses: These tend to run small, particularly around the shoulders. If you're broad-shouldered or carry more of your weight on top, go up a full size without hesitation.

  • Dresses: Their dresses tend to be cut for a narrower, more European shape. If you're curvy around the hip and waist, factor that in — I'd suggest going up a size and belting it if needed rather than squeezing in.

  • Knitwear: Generally more forgiving. Oversized styles especially — stick to your normal conversion here, or even size down if you prefer a baggier look.

  • Trousers & Jeans: Size up. Non-negotiable. Their denim especially runs slim through the thigh and hip.

  • Occasion & Party Dresses: This is genuinely where they shine. Beautiful pieces at a fraction of the price of designer. Just be aware these tend to be cut close to the body, so use the size-up rule here too.

My Honest Verdict on Gina Tricot Quality

I'll be straight with you — Gina Tricot sits firmly in the fast fashion category in terms of price and production. But for trend pieces you want for one season, or an evening look you don't want to spend a fortune on, it genuinely delivers. Their faux leather pieces, their knitted co-ords, and their occasion dresses have impressed me more than once. The quality isn't Reiss or Arket, but it's a step above pure throwaway fashion if you treat the pieces well.

My advice? Use it for trend-led items — the going-out top, the party dress, the seasonal colour piece. For wardrobe investment pieces, look elsewhere.

High Street Alternatives — If Gina Tricot Doesn't Quite Fit Your Shape

If Gina Tricot's sizing or cut doesn't work for your body shape, here are some brilliant alternatives that offer similar style but in more generous or varied fits:

  • Zara — The obvious go-to for trend-led European fashion. Sizing is similarly European but slightly more consistent than Gina Tricot, and their size range has improved significantly in recent years.

  • Mango — My personal favourite for that elevated Scandi-meets-Mediterranean look. Sizes tend to run closer to UK sizing than Gina Tricot, and their quality feels a touch better across basics and tailoring.

  • River Island — Particularly strong for dresses and occasion wear. UK sizing runs true to form here, and they cater brilliantly to curves with their more generous cut through the hip.

  • ASOS — Unbeatable for range and size inclusivity. If Gina Tricot doesn't go large enough or the fit doesn't work, ASOS carries similar styles in an enormous range of sizes.

  • Topshop (via ASOS) — The Topshop archive still lives on through ASOS, and many of the original fits and styles are available. Good for that sleek, fashion-forward look in UK sizing.

  • H&M — Gina Tricot's closest Swedish rival, and genuinely comparable on price and style. H&M tends to be slightly more generous in cut for UK shoppers.

  • Urban Outfitters — Excellent for the younger, more directional look that Gina Tricot also targets. Sizing varies by brand within UO, so always check the individual brand guide.

  • COS — If you love Gina Tricot's cleaner, more minimal pieces, COS is the premium step up. Better quality, longer-lasting, and sizing is clearly labelled with measurements online.

Premium Picks — When You Want to Step It Up

  • Reiss — For occasion dressing that looks genuinely expensive, Reiss is the natural next step up from Gina Tricot. Their sizing is consistent and true to UK fit, which is a relief after navigating European sizing.

  • Whistles — Smart, modern, and incredibly wearable. Brilliant for evening pieces that don't look like they came off a fast fashion rail. UK sizing, consistent fits.

  • & Other Stories — Part of the H&M group but operates entirely on its own elevated level. Gorgeous fabrics, thoughtful design, and Swedish-inspired aesthetic that actually aligns with what Gina Tricot is going for — just better made.

Luxury & Designer — For When You Want It to Last

  • Toteme — If Gina Tricot is your gateway into Scandinavian fashion, Toteme is the destination. Understated, impeccably made, and built to last decades. Swedish, clean, and absolutely worth the investment.

  • Acne Studios — Another Swedish heavyweight. Their denim and knitwear in particular are exceptional. The price reflects it, but so does the quality and longevity.

Two Independent Brands Worth Knowing About

  • Gestuz — A Danish contemporary label that flies somewhat under the radar in the UK, but absolutely shouldn't. Their pieces have that same elevated Scandi sensibility as Gina Tricot's best looks, with far better fabric quality and more considered sizing. Worth bookmarking if you love that aesthetic.

  • Samsøe Samsøe — Another Scandinavian independent that I keep recommending to clients who want that clean, minimal wardrobe without the designer price tag. Their sizing is more accurate to UK measurements than Gina Tricot and their basics are genuinely brilliant.
