What Is Sizing Like at Acne Studios? An Honest Menswear Fit Guide

Founded in Stockholm in 1996 by Jonny Johansson, Acne Studios built its name on deliberate oversizing, boxy proportions and a bit of quiet weirdness. That matters for fit, because a lot of Acne's on-body measurements look enormous on the size chart — and they're meant to. The brand is designing a silhouette, not fitting you like a tailor would. Once that clicks, sizing gets a lot less stressful.

How Acne ready-to-wear actually fits

Acne runs on European lettered sizing (XS–XXL) for most of its tops and knitwear, but the cut varies wildly piece to piece. Here's the shorthand I give clients:

  • T-shirts & tees: Frequently cut oversized with dropped shoulders. If you want a cleaner, closer line, size down one. If you're chasing the relaxed look, stick to your usual.

  • Knitwear & sweatshirts: Boxy and wide with generous bodies. Fit to your shoulders and chest, not the length — these are designed to sit roomy.

  • Shirts & overshirts: Generally relaxed. Great over a tee, less good if you want something sharp and fitted under a jacket.

  • Chore jackets & outerwear: Famously boxy. Brilliant for layering over knits, but if you want a trimmer outline, dropping a size is fair game.

  • Shoes: Refreshingly sensible — Acne footwear tends to run true to size, so order your normal number.

The denim decoder (the bit everyone gets wrong)

Acne denim is where people really come unstuck, because the jeans are labelled with numbered fit codes rather than plain-English fit names. You'll see styles like 1981, 1996, 2006, 2010, 2021 and 2023, and each is a distinct silhouette. The brand also groups them into three named cuts — North (slim), River (regular) and Land (loose). A quick translation of the ones you'll meet most:

  • 2021: Regular fit, mid waist, wide straight leg with a subtle flare from the knee — the current crowd-pleaser.

  • 1981F: Full-on baggy, Y2K energy — the one you've seen everywhere.

  • 2006M: A relaxed, loose cut that's easy to live in.

Waist sizing is in inches, and here's the crucial technical point: Acne denim usually carries around 2% elastane, so it stretches and gives after a wear or two. That's why I almost always tell people to size down one from their true waist — a genuine 31 often settles better in a 30. My proudest Acne moment was talking a client out of his usual 32 into a 31 in the 2021; they moulded to him perfectly within a week and he's never gone back.

What's on trend and how to style it

Acne is right at the centre of the wide-leg, Y2K denim revival, so if you're buying now, lean into it rather than fighting it. The trick with all that volume is balance:

  • Pair baggy 2021s or 1981s with something fitted up top — a slim knit or a tucked tee — so the proportions read intentional, not sloppy.

  • Use the boxy chore jacket as your layering hero over a fine-gauge jumper.

  • For smart-casual, go slimmer denim, a crisp shirt and a clean trainer — Acne's minimalism does the heavy lifting.

My golden rule with Acne: decide the silhouette you want before you look at the size. Check the specific product's measurements every single time, because two jumpers in the same size can fit completely differently.

Brands that sit beautifully alongside Acne

If you love the Acne look but want to spread your budget — or find alternatives that fit more predictably — these are the labels I'd genuinely point you towards, across three tiers.

On the high street

  • COS — The closest high-street match for Acne's clean, architectural minimalism, at a fraction of the price and with far more consistent, true-to-size fits.

  • Arket — Muted Scandi palette, quality cotton and wool, and roomy-but-wearable cuts. Perfect for building the understated basics an Acne piece sits on top of.

  • Uniqlo (the U line especially) — Unbeatable value for boxy tees and merino knits, with reliable sizing that makes it a safe place to experiment with proportion.

Independent & boutique

  • Nudie Jeans — Fellow Swedes and denim obsessives, with a free-repairs-for-life ethos. If Acne's fit codes intimidate you, Nudie's clearly named cuts are a friendlier way into premium Scandi denim.

  • Our Legacy — Another Stockholm label with that elevated, slightly off-kilter sensibility. Expect relaxed fits and gorgeous fabrics — a natural step up if you're chasing the Acne aesthetic with more edge.

  • Kestin — Edinburgh-based, quietly excellent, and refreshingly grounded on sizing. Great for functional, considered pieces that layer neatly under Acne outerwear.

Designer & luxury

  • A.P.C. — The French masters of raw denim and pared-back essentials. Their jeans run leaner and more predictable than Acne's, so they're the ideal luxury alternative if you prefer a slimmer, classic line.

  • Lemaire — For the person who adores Acne's fluid, oversized drape but wants it turned up to eleven. Beautiful volume, exceptional cloth — measure carefully, as it's cut generously by design.
