What Is Sizing Like at Alaïa?

Alaïa runs small — and that is the single most useful thing I can tell you before you reach for the checkout. The ready-to-wear, and especially the body-conscious knits the house is famous for, fits close to the body and sculpts rather than skims, so most people are happiest going up a size from their usual UK fit. The big exception is the cult mesh ballet flats, which behave completely differently to the clothing. Let me walk you through it properly, because Alaïa is a brand where getting the size right genuinely changes how the piece makes you feel.

The short answer: size up on clothing

Azzedine Alaïa built the house on second-skin tailoring — he was a trained sculptor before he was a couturier, and you feel it in every seam. The clothes are engineered to hold and shape the figure, which is glorious when the fit is right and unforgiving when it isn't. Crucially, Alaïa does not do vanity sizing. The numbers reflect real measurements rather than a flattering marketing tag, so the size that feels "wrong" on paper is very often the one that fits like couture in the mirror.

One more thing that throws people: Alaïa uses French sizing, so online you'll see numbers like 38, 40 and 42 rather than UK 10, 12 and 14. Don't panic at the bigger number — it means nothing about you and everything about the house's measurement system.

How Alaïa fits, fabric by fabric

Fit shifts a lot depending on what you're buying, so here's how the main fabrics actually behave:

Stretch-knit viscose: the signature bodycon. Forgiving because of the stretch, but still properly fitted — lovely on an hourglass or slim frame. True to size for most, size up if you carry more through the bust.
Lambskin and leather: rigid and structured with no give. These run a touch small — size up if you're between sizes or want any movement.
Poplin and cotton shirts: cut narrow through the torso. If you're broader across the back or bust, this is the category to size up on.
Wool-blend coats: closest to true to size, but with minimal layering room. Fine over a fine knit, snug over a chunky jumper.

My honest rule of thumb: if there's stretch, take your usual size and only go up if you're curvier; if there's no stretch, size up by default. Reviews on the major stockists echo this almost word for word — beautiful craftsmanship, gorgeous on, but tight at the waist and bust unless you went a size bigger.

The mesh ballet flats are a different story

The shoes that broke the internet — the mesh and fishnet ballet flats with the little patent trim and buckle strap — do not follow the clothing's "size up" logic. Alaïa footwear generally runs true to size, and some styles even run slightly large. The catch is that the mesh flats come in full sizes only, so if you're a half size, take the next whole size up rather than down. They have a strap across the foot that keeps everything secure, so a fraction of extra room won't have you shuffling.

A quick confession from my own wardrobe

I learned the "size up" lesson the expensive way. I once ordered a ribbed Alaïa knit dress in my standard UK 12 for a summer wedding, felt very pleased with myself, and then couldn't get the zip past my ribs. Gorgeous fabric, completely undone by my own optimism — it went straight back. The flats, on the other hand, were my redemption arc: I'm a stubborn half size, took the whole size up as advised, and they've been the most worn shoes in my rotation since. Two lessons, one brand.
