What Is Sizing Like at Balmain?

The headline you need: Balmain runs small, and it runs slim. There's almost no vanity sizing here. In my experience fitting clients, Balmain sits roughly a full size tighter than your high-street favourites like Reiss or COS. If you've got an athletic or broad build, the chest, shoulders and arms are where you'll feel the squeeze first.

How It Fits, Category by Category

Balmain doesn't fit the same way across the board, so don't treat one size as gospel. Here's my breakdown from years of dressing men in it:

  • Tailoring & blazers: The snuggest cut in the whole range. Cut close through the shoulder and bicep. If you lift weights or simply have a normal-sized back, size up. Don't be a hero.

  • Knitwear: Ribbed knits and fine-gauge jumpers are deliberately fitted and have very little give. Size up if you want to layer anything underneath.

  • T-shirts & shirts: Closer to true-to-size, though cut lean. The cotton can shrink a touch, so factor that in before you tumble dry.

  • Sweatshirts & hoodies: Sweats are a bit more relaxed and generally true to size; hoodies come in tighter. If you want that easy streetwear drape, go up one.

  • Denim & jeans: Slim and rigid. The biker styles especially have minimal stretch, so they'll feel firm until they break in. True to size for a tight look, up one for comfort.

  • Trainers & shoes: Generally true to size, but if you're between sizes, take the larger. Half a size up never hurt anyone in a stiff leather sneaker.

Fit-wise, Balmain sits in the same family as Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen — all of them hug the body. If you already own and love those, you'll know the drill.

How to Style It & What's On Trend

Balmain works hardest when you let one piece do the talking. The mistake I see men make constantly is wearing head-to-toe designer and ending up looking like a billboard. Pick your hero piece and build calm around it.

  • The blazer move: A structured Balmain blazer over a plain white tee and tapered black trousers is the most reliable smart-casual look going. Let the shoulder do the work.

  • Knit and denim: A ribbed Balmain knit with raw indigo jeans and a clean leather trainer — understated, expensive-looking, and genuinely wearable on a normal day.

  • On trend right now: Quieter luxury is still leading. Texture over logos, tonal layering, and tailoring with a bit of softness in the shoulder. Balmain's pared-back pieces fit that brief better than the heavily embellished ones.

Brands I'd Recommend — At Every Budget

Not everyone wants to drop four figures, and frankly you don't need to. Here are the labels I send clients to when they want the Balmain attitude without always paying the Balmain price.

High Street

  • Reiss — The closest the high street gets to that sharp, slim Balmain silhouette. Brilliant tailoring for the money and a sizing benchmark I trust.

  • COS — Minimalist, structured and Scandinavian-clean. Perfect for the calm pieces you build around a designer hero item.

Independent & Boutique

  • Oliver Spencer — A British independent doing characterful tailoring with a softer, more forgiving cut than Balmain. Lovely fabrics, real craft.

  • Universal Works — Nottingham-based, relaxed workwear-meets-tailoring. The antidote when you want texture and ease rather than a sucked-in fit.

Designer & Luxury

  • Saint Laurent — The natural sizing cousin to Balmain. Same lean, rock-and-roll tailoring. If Balmain fits you, this will too.

  • Amiri — LA luxury streetwear that scratches the same itch as Balmain's bolder pieces, with a slightly more generous cut.

  • Alexander McQueen — Structured, dramatic and fitted. Another house where sizing up is usually the smart call for a broader frame.
