What Is Sizing Like at Bec & Bridge?

Bec & Bridge generally runs true to size on UK measurements, but the bust is where it trips people up — a huge number of its strapless, fitted and cutout styles run small up top, so anyone with a fuller chest usually needs to size up by one. I’ve been styling clients in this label for years, and once you understand that one quirk, it becomes one of the most reliable occasion brands out there. Let me walk you through exactly how it fits, where it catches you out, and how to get it spot on first time.
So, is Bec & Bridge actually true to size?
For the most part, yes. This is an Australian label built around modern, polished occasionwear — think slinky maxis, party minis and beautifully cut event dresses — and the body of the garment (waist, hips, length) tends to land exactly where you’d expect. The brand uses Australian sizing, which lines up almost perfectly with UK sizing, so an AU 8 is a UK 8, an AU 10 is a UK 10, and so on. No mental gymnastics required there.
Where it gets interesting is the cut. Bec & Bridge designs around a long, lean silhouette, and that aesthetic shapes the fit far more than the number on the label does.
Where the sizing catches you out
This is the bit I wish someone had told me years ago. The fit varies hugely depending on the style and the fabric, so here’s what to actually watch for:
The bust runs small. The brand itself flags this on plenty of product pages — their fitted and strapless dresses are cut close across the chest. If you’re a C cup or above, size up top and you’ll save yourself the dreaded underboob situation.
Stretch vs non-stretch changes everything. Their crepe and jersey styles are forgiving and hug nicely; the structured, no-stretch pieces are far less generous. Always check the fabric note before you commit to your usual size.
Cutouts and low backs sit precisely. These dresses are designed to skim, not cling everywhere, so the placement matters. A size too small and the cutouts gape; a size too big and the whole thing loses its shape.
Length is generous. Their models are typically 5’9” to 5’11”, so if you’re petite, expect maxis to puddle and factor in a hem.
My honest styling take
I’ll be candid — my first Bec & Bridge buy was a styling fail. I grabbed my usual UK 10 in a strapless crepe maxi for a wedding, didn’t check the fit notes, and spent the entire day hoiking it up at the bust. Lesson learned. The very next piece I bought, a draped halter in stretch jersey, I sized up to a 12 on top and it was honestly one of the best-fitting dresses I’ve ever owned. Same brand, two completely different outcomes — all down to fabric and the bust.
So my golden rule: buy for your bust, then take the waist in if you need to. A good tailor will nip a waist in ten minutes; nobody can add fabric to a too-tight chest.
Where else to shop if the fit isn’t for you

If Bec & Bridge doesn’t suit your shape, or you simply want options at a different price point, here are the brands I steer clients towards for that same elevated, occasion-ready look.
High street
Reiss — my first port of call for polished, tailored occasion dresses with a genuinely flattering, true-to-size cut.
Coast — the original occasionwear specialist; brilliant for weddings and events with reliable, consistent sizing.
Phase Eight — beautifully structured event pieces that are kind to a fuller bust and hourglass shapes.
Whistles — modern, minimal and clean-lined, ideal if you love the Bec & Bridge silhouette but want understated.
Ted Baker — feminine, detail-led occasion dresses; tends to run slightly snug, so size up if between.
Mango — the best value for trend-led party dresses that genuinely punch above their price.
River Island — spot-on for going-out and cutout styles in a similar vein, at a fraction of the cost.
Premium
Sandro — Parisian occasion dressing with that effortless, slightly undone elegance; cut on the slim side.
Ghost — iconic bias-cut slip and crepe dresses that drape like a dream and forgive a lot.
Sézane — French-girl chic with a softer, romantic fit; lovely for day-to-night occasionwear.
Luxury & designer
Max Mara — investment tailoring and event dressing with impeccable, generous-but-precise fit.
By Malene Birger — Scandinavian luxury with sculptural, statement occasion pieces that feel quietly expensive.
Two off-the-radar independents I love
Rat & Boa — a London independent doing slinky, body-skimming going-out dresses with serious main-character energy. Cut close, so size up if in doubt.
With Jéan — an Australian indie cut from the same cloth as Bec & Bridge; romantic, occasion-led and brilliant for weddings if you want something nobody else will be wearing.
