What Is Sizing Like at Boden? Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

Boden runs true to size for most of its range, but there are some specific fits — particularly in jersey, knitwear, and denim — that can catch you out if you're not expecting them. I'll walk you through exactly what to expect so you can order with confidence.

I've been a Boden customer for years. I'd say it's one of those brands I return to seasonally without much deliberation — the prints are joyful, the quality is solid, and they've quietly built one of the most consistent sizing systems of any British brand at this price point. That said, I've had the odd sizing wobble (more on that shortly), so this is my honest take, not a PR puff piece.

Boden's General Sizing — The Honest Overview

Across the vast majority of their womenswear, Boden sizes run true to size. If you're a standard UK 12 in most high street brands, you'll almost certainly be a 12 at Boden. Their fit is designed for a classic British body shape — not vanity-sized down like some American brands, and not cut for a model's proportions.

A few things I'd flag immediately:

  • Jersey tops and casual dresses — these can come up ever so slightly generous. Nothing dramatic, but if you're between sizes, size down.

  • Tailored pieces — blazers, structured trousers, smart dresses — fit beautifully true to size and the construction quality means they hold their shape well.

  • Knitwear — spot on for size, and the weight is lovely. Their merino and cotton-blend jumpers don't shrink or stretch out of shape with normal washing.

  • Denim — I'd say their jeans run just slightly snug through the thigh. If you're curvier through the hip and thigh, consider sizing up one and using a belt at the waist.

Petite, Tall, and Standard Lengths — Boden Gets This Right

One of the things Boden genuinely does well is offering multiple length options across much of their trouser and dress range. You can shop Petite (for those under 5'4"), Regular, and Long — and unusually for a mid-range brand, the Petite option isn't just a chopped-down regular; it's actually proportioned differently through the leg rise and body length. I'm 5'3" and their Petite trousers are among the few I don't need to take to a tailor.

Their dress lengths are consistently cut for a Regular (approximately 5'5"–5'7") frame. If you're petite, the midi lengths can easily become maxi on you — so do check the exact length measurements in the product description, which Boden lists clearly.

That Time I Nearly Returned Everything (and Didn't)

A couple of seasons ago, I ordered a Boden linen shirt dress in my usual size and it arrived looking like a tent. I panicked. Nearly sent it all back. But I'd bought it during their summer sale and hadn't realised it was from their more relaxed, boxy-cut casual line rather than their fitted shirt-dress range. Once I understood that Boden actually has two distinct fits within "shirt dresses" — a relaxed cut and a fitted one — everything made sense. The lesson: always check whether a piece is described as relaxed fit or fitted. They do label this, but it's easy to skim past it.

Boden Size Range — Inclusive but Not the Widest

Boden sizes run from UK 6 to 22 in most styles, with some styles extending further. They've made decent progress on extended sizing in recent years, and the fit consistency across the size range is better than many comparable brands. That said, if you regularly shop above a 20, you may find some styles don't go that high — worth checking per product.

How Does Boden Compare to Similar Brands?

If you shop Boden, you're probably also browsing some of these classic, quality-led British and European brands. Here's how Boden's sizing compares — and some alternatives worth knowing about:

  • Joules — runs very similarly to Boden, true to size. Great for countryside-casual prints with a similar British aesthetic. Their jersey pieces can also be slightly generous.

  • White Stuff — a close Boden cousin in terms of ethos and sizing. Generally true to size, although their relaxed linen styles can come up large in the same way.

  • Seasalt Cornwall — sized generously through the body; if you're between sizes, I'd size down. Beautiful heritage fabrics and a similar coastal-British feel.

  • Fat Face — true to size across most of their range; their knitwear in particular is well-fitted and consistent.

  • Whistles — sizes slightly smaller than Boden, more in line with a European cut. If you're a 12 at Boden you may need a 14 at Whistles for a relaxed fit.

  • Jigsaw — also cuts slightly narrower, particularly through the shoulder and bust. Size up one if you're fuller through the chest.

  • The White Company — beautifully true to size, particularly their jersey and linen ranges. A reliable benchmark if you're unsure.

  • Mint Velvet — runs true to size, with a slightly more relaxed fit designed for comfort as much as style. Good for similar occasions as Boden.

For two more independent picks I love in this space:

  • Wyse London — a brilliant independent British brand with Boden-esque colour confidence but a slightly more elevated, London-chic feel. Their knitwear is outstanding and they size true to a UK standard.

  • Chalk — a small UK indie brand beloved by stylists for their relaxed linen and cotton separates. Their sizing is generous and they give detailed measurements — very helpful if you're between sizes.

Boden Returns and Sizing Help — Good News

If you're buying for the first time, it's worth knowing that Boden's returns policy is very customer-friendly. They offer free returns within a generous window, so ordering two sizes and returning one isn't a logistical headache. Their size guides on the product pages also give bust, waist, and hip measurements for each size which, if you know your measurements, takes most of the guesswork out of it entirely.

My Honest Verdict on Boden Sizing

Boden is one of the more reliable brands I recommend to clients who want to shop online without anxiety. Their sizing is consistent, their product labelling is clear, and the quality genuinely justifies the price. My only caveat is to always check whether a piece is relaxed or fitted, and to size up one in denim if you're fuller through the hip. Beyond that? Shop in your usual size and you'll almost certainly be fine.
