What Is Sizing Like at BOSS?

First, the bit nobody tells you. The brand split into two lines back in the nineties, and they fit completely differently:

BOSS is the grown-up, tailored mainline — cleaner, more classic, a touch roomier. This is the suits, the smart knitwear, the polished casualwear.
HUGO is the younger, slimmer, more fashion-forward line. It runs noticeably tighter, especially through the chest and arms.

If you buy a HUGO tee in your BOSS polo size, you'll feel like you've been vacuum-packed. I learned this the hard way years ago with a HUGO bomber that looked immaculate on the hanger and cut off the circulation to my forearms the second I moved. Check which line you're on.

The Label Trap: EU vs UK Sizing

This is the one that trips everyone up. BOSS tailoring — suits, blazers, formal trousers, shirts, coats — is labelled in German/European sizing, not UK. So you'll see 46, 48, 50 rather than S, M, L.

The quick mental shortcut I use on the shop floor:

EU 46 ≈ UK Small / roughly a 36" chest
EU 48 ≈ UK Medium / roughly a 38" chest
EU 50 ≈ UK Large / roughly a 40" chest
EU 52 ≈ UK XL / roughly a 42" chest

Casual trousers and jeans, on the other hand, are usually sized the sensible way — waist and leg in inches. It's only the smart, tailored end where the EU numbers appear.

Know Your Fit: Slim, Regular or Comfort

BOSS builds most garments in three fits, and this matters far more than the size number:

Slim fit — tailored close to the body through the chest and waist. Sharp, but unforgiving if you carry any muscle. My rule: if you lift, try before you buy.
Regular fit — the everyday sweet spot. Comfortable through the torso without being baggy. This is what most men should be reaching for.
Comfort / relaxed fit — an extra inch or two of room, ideal for layering or a softer silhouette.

On shirts specifically, there's a fourth option — Extra Slim — which is genuinely fitted at the waist. Great if you're lean and want that tapered look; a struggle if you're not.

A quick word on shoes

BOSS footwear is EU-sized and mostly true to size, though the dress styles run a little narrow. Wide feet: size up half. I once talked a groom out of the "perfect" pair of BOSS loafers a half-size too small — he'd have been limping down the aisle. Trust the measurement, not the mirror.

BOSS sits in that accessible-premium zone, so here's how I'd build a wardrobe around it, whatever you're spending.

Reiss — the closest high-street rival to BOSS for smart tailoring. Slightly slimmer cut, brilliant modern suits, and sizing that stays consistent season to season.
M&S Autograph — quietly excellent value tailoring with reliable, forgiving fits. My go-to when a client wants a proper suit without the premium price tag.
COS — if you find BOSS too fitted, COS runs boxier and more relaxed. Minimalist, architectural, and superb for elevated basics.

Independent / boutique
