What Is Sizing Like at Champion menswear?

Champion runs large by UK standards, and it's cut boxy on purpose. It's an American brand using US and European sizing, so if you take your usual size you'll get that loose, slightly cropped 80s-gym silhouette the label is famous for. If you want a neater, closer fit, size down one — particularly on hoodies, sweats and joggers.

How Champion actually fits

Champion has never pretended to be a slim-fit brand. The whole thing is built around Reverse Weave heritage — heavyweight cotton, wide-set shoulders, a body that sits square rather than tapered, and sleeves that run a touch longer than you'd expect. That's the look, and it's why the sweats have hung around for forty-odd years.

A few things worth knowing before you buy:

  • Hoodies and sweats sit true-to-size but boxy. Take your normal size for that authentic drape; drop a size if you want it tidier through the chest and waist.

  • T-shirts are the same story with less volume — boxier than a standard tee, but not oversized.

  • Joggers are relaxed through the thigh. Fine on most builds, but if you're lean go down one for a straighter line.

  • Watch the sub-labels. Reverse Weave, Champion Authentic and Champion Europe don't all fit identically — the US-facing collections tend to run the largest.

I learned this the hard way years ago. I bought a Reverse Weave crew in my "safe" large for a shoot, assuming American sizing meant snug. It turned up looking like I'd borrowed it off a much bigger man — glorious quality, completely wrong proportions on camera. Medium would have been spot on. Now I always tell clients: with Champion, measure first, guess never.

What to buy and how to style it

The sweet spot with Champion is leaning into the retro-sport look without going full costume. A heavyweight hoodie over a plain tee, straight or tapered trousers, and a clean trainer does most of the work. Keep the logo doing the talking and let everything else stay quiet.

If you like the boxy Champion silhouette, here's where I'd shop across the price points:

  • COS — the go-to on the high street for heavyweight, structured sweats with that same square cut. Sizing is generous, so try before you commit to your usual.

  • Arket — Scandi basics done properly. Their loopback sweatshirts are the natural stablemate to a Champion hoodie.

  • Uniqlo — unbeatable value for the plain tees and crews you'll layer underneath. Fits neater than Champion, so no need to size down.

  • Weekday — for a more streetwear-leaning, deliberately oversized take if you want to push the volume further.

Independent and boutique is where you trade up in fabric and get away from the logo crowd:

  • Percival — a British label doing playful, characterful knits and sweats with a proper personality. Fit is trimmer than Champion.

  • Colorful Standard — organic-cotton heavyweight sweats in a brilliant colour range, built to a similar weight to Reverse Weave.

Designer and luxury, when you want the elevated version of the same idea:

  • Ami Paris — premium French sweats with a clean, considered cut and just enough logo. Runs closer to the body than Champion.

  • Acne Studios — boxy, oversized sweatshirts done at the top end, with a fit philosophy that actually echoes Champion's roomier proportions.
