What is sizing like at Cloth & Stone?

Cloth & Stone generally runs true to size, but the cut is deliberately relaxed and drapey, so almost everything wears a touch roomier than the number on the label suggests. If you want that easy, lived-in look the brand is known for, take your usual size and you’ll be spot on. If you’d rather a top sit closer to the body, this is one of the rare cases where I’d tell you to size down rather than up. I learned that the hard way: my first Cloth & Stone button-down was a size up “to be safe” and I spent a whole summer with sleeves swallowing my hands and a hem I could have used as a picnic blanket. Lovely fabric, wrong call.
Who are Cloth & Stone?
Cloth & Stone is an Anthropologie-exclusive label built around one idea: easy to wear, easy to love. Think soft tencel and rayon button-downs, gauzy tanks, chambray shirts and the kind of throw-on dress that does ninety per cent of the work for you. The fabrics are the whole point — they’re washed and finished to feel broken-in from day one, which is also why the fit reads so forgiving. It’s laid-back, lightly bohemian, and built for brunch, errands and warm-weather travel rather than anything structured.
How the fit actually works
Because the line leans on soft, fluid fabrics rather than tailoring, the silhouette skims rather than holds. Here’s how I’d guide you through it:
Tops & button-downs: true to size for a relaxed look. Size down only if you want a neater shoulder and less volume through the body.
Tanks & tees: generous and floaty — the most forgiving cut they do. True to size unless you like things fitted, in which case drop one.
Dresses & rompers: usually true to size, but check the waist seam on anything elasticated — the bodies are roomy, so a defined waist matters.
If you’re between sizes: go down. The fabric grows a little with wear, and the relaxed cut already builds in room.
Petite frames: Anthropologie stocks Cloth & Stone in petite, and it’s worth seeking out — the regular cut can overwhelm a shorter torso.
My honest take after years of styling this kind of soft shirting: the fabric is the hero, but it’s also the trap. Drapey cloth photographs beautifully on a hanger and then puddles on a real body if you’ve gone too big. When in doubt, trust the smaller size.
How to style it
Cloth & Stone is a tucking-and-half-tucking brand. A relaxed button-down looks aimless left loose, but tuck the front into a high-waisted trouser or denim and suddenly it reads intentional. I live in mine half-tucked with wide-leg linen and flat sandals, sleeves pushed up. For the tanks, layer — a soft cami under an open shirt is the brand’s whole aesthetic in one outfit.
