What Is Sizing Like at DÔEN?
Author: Stylist at TellarDate: 2026
DÔEN runs true to size for the most part, with a romantic, slightly relaxed cut that's wonderfully forgiving if you're caught between sizes. The Los Angeles label — founded by sisters Margaret and Katherine Kleveland — built its name on prairie dresses, puff sleeves and smocked bodices, and that whole aesthetic shapes the way everything fits. Stick with your usual size and you'll be right the vast majority of the time. Where it gets interesting is in the detail, and that's exactly where I can save you a return or two.
So, how does DÔEN actually fit?
Think soft, feminine and a little loose by design. DÔEN isn't trying to cling — the entire point is that breezy, undone, vintage-on-holiday feel. Because so many pieces use shirring, smocking and ties, there's built-in give, which makes the brand genuinely brilliant if you're, say, a 12 on top and a 14 on the bottom (or the other way round).
A quick confession from me: the very first DÔEN piece I bought, I sized up "to be safe" — classic rookie error. The smocked back meant it absolutely swam on me and straight back it went. Lesson learned. With this brand, your instinct to over-order is usually the wrong one.
The fit, piece by piece
Here's how the main categories tend to behave, in my experience dressing clients in them:
Smocked & shirred dresses — the most forgiving things in the range. True to size, and if you're in between, size down. The stretch panel does the work for you.
Structured styles & jackets — anything without elastic or shirring sits closer to the body. If you're curvier through the hip or bust, take your true size or nudge up.
Silk pieces — tend to run a touch looser through the bust, so don't panic if there's a little extra room.
Bias-cut skirts & slips — these drape close and skim, so go with your usual size.
Blouses — designed to be relaxed and gently billowy. Your normal size gives that effortless tucked-in look; only size down if you want it neater.
One genuine word of warning: a few of the signature dresses have a very low neckline. Beautiful, but worth a proper look at the product photos before you commit — the ties are often decorative, not adjustable, so there's no cheating your way to more coverage.
Where to shop for the DÔEN look

DÔEN lives in that lovely romantic-Californian space, and plenty of brands scratch the same itch at different price points. Here's where I'd send clients chasing the same mood.
On the high street
Anthropologie — probably the closest high-street cousin to DÔEN: prints, puff sleeves and floaty silhouettes everywhere you look.
Hush — relaxed, boho-leaning pieces with that same easy prairie feel.
Boden — unbeatable for proper florals and feminine prints that never tip into twee.
Seasalt Cornwall — soft, painterly prints and breezy cottons; very DÔEN-on-a-budget.
Monsoon — my go-to for romantic occasion dresses with embroidery and pretty detailing.
Joules — print-led, quietly well made and surprisingly grown-up.
Whistles — when you want the feminine mood but with a cleaner, more modern line.
Jigsaw — elevated fabrics and elegant cuts that layer beautifully under a coat.
Premium picks
Me&Em — clever, flattering design and a strong line in elevated feminine pieces.
Claudie Pierlot — French-girl romance with a slightly sharper edge.
Reiss — for the more tailored, special-occasion end of the spectrum.
Luxury & designer
Zimmermann — the ultimate splurge for romantic, intricate, dreamy dressing.
Ulla Johnson — sculptural sleeves and gorgeous textiles, very much in DÔEN's world.
LoveShackFancy — full-tilt romance: ruffles, florals and prairie everything.
And two off-the-radar favourites
RIXO — the London label famous for hand-painted, vintage-inspired prints; honestly the spiritual sister of DÔEN.
Christy Dawn — a small, sustainable LA brand making deadstock-fabric prairie dresses that DÔEN devotees quietly obsess over.
