What Is Sizing Like at Debut?

Debut sizing runs broadly true to standard UK measurements – a Debut size 12 lines up closely with the Debenhams own-brand body chart, so if you’re a 12 across most of the high street, you’ll usually be a 12 here too. That’s the short answer, and it’s good news. But occasionwear is a different beast to a Tuesday-morning T-shirt, and Debut – now sold online through debenhams.com as the Debut London label – is firmly occasionwear territory: wedding-guest dresses, embellished evening pieces, fascinators and the kind of frock you only wear when there’s a champagne reception involved. So let me give you the proper, lived-in version.
So how does Debut sizing actually run?
Debut follows the standard Debenhams own-brand sizing blocks, which means it sits comfortably in line with the British high-street norm rather than running vanity-small or stingy-tight. In practice:
Take your usual UK size as the starting point. If you’re a reliable 14 at M&S or Next, a 14 at Debut is the sensible first try.
It’s cut for an occasion silhouette. Many pieces are structured – boned bodices, fitted waists, a bit of internal support – so they hold a shape rather than skim loosely.
Petite and plus options exist across the range, so length and proportion are catered for if you’re under 5’3” or sizing up.
The bits that catch people out
Here’s where my stylist hat goes on. The single most common Debut mismatch is the bust-to-waist ratio. Because so much of the range is fitted occasionwear, the bodice is engineered to a fairly standard cup proportion. If you’re fuller on top, the dress that fits your waist beautifully can pull across the chest – and the dress that fits your bust can gape at the middle.
A confession, since I promise you honesty: I once ordered a gorgeous Debut lace midi in my “normal” 12 for a christening, didn’t try it until the morning of, and spent the service doing the discreet arms-pinned-to-sides routine because the bust was a whisker too snug. Lesson learned. My wins these days come from a few simple habits:
Always check the fabric. Structured satins, brocades and heavily embellished pieces have almost no give – size up if you’re between sizes. Jersey and stretch-lined styles are far more forgiving.
Mind the lining. Occasion dresses are often fully lined, which can make them feel a half-size smaller than an unlined high-street dress in the same number.
Buy for your largest measurement and tailor the rest. A nip at the waist is a ten-minute job; rebuilding a too-tight bust is not.
Where to shop if Debut isn’t quite landing

If you love the Debut look but the fit fights you, occasionwear is a rich category and there are brilliant alternatives at every price point. Here are my picks – chosen for how well they cut for real bodies, not just how pretty the lookbook is.
High street
Coast – the obvious like-for-like swap; built entirely around occasion dressing with sharp, structured tailoring and generous bust room.
Monsoon – beautiful embellishment and embroidery, cut a touch more relaxed than Debut, which suits softer waists.
Phase Eight – my go-to for mother-of-the-bride and wedding-guest dressing; reliably true to size with flattering, forgiving fits.
Hobbs – grown-up, considered occasionwear with a slightly more tailored, classic block.
Ted Baker – statement occasion pieces, though they cut narrow through the shoulders and bust, so size up if you’re curvier on top.
Whistles – modern, minimalist occasion dressing for anyone who finds traditional occasionwear too fussy.
Oasis – fun, affordable party and guest dresses, generally true to standard UK sizing.
Warehouse – on-trend occasion styles at the friendliest prices, ideal for one-wear events.
Premium
Reiss – polished, architectural occasionwear with immaculate finishing; runs slightly slim, so try your usual then a size up.
LK Bennett – the classic British occasion label; elegant, true-to-size dresses that photograph beautifully.
Luxury / designer
Self-Portrait – the modern wedding-guest icon; lace and structured midis that do a lot of the flattering for you, though sizing is on the snug side.
Max Mara – for understated, investment occasionwear in superb fabric, cut generously and made to last decades.
Two off-the-radar names worth knowing
RIXO – an independent London label doing romantic printed silk dresses with proper, generous cuts; wonderful for a relaxed garden wedding.
KITRI – a small, design-led London brand making distinctive occasion pieces in limited runs, so you won’t turn up in the same dress as three other guests.
