What Is Sizing Like at Dickies?

TELLAR FASHION HUB — BRAND SIZING GUIDES
By Ella Blake — Fashion Stylist | Tellar Fashion Hub — Always honest, unbiased, & unsponsored
Dickies sizing is generally true to size, but there are a few important fit quirks — particularly in the trousers — that are worth knowing before you click buy.
"I came to Dickies late, I'll admit. For years I thought of them as purely a builder's merchant staple — not something I'd find much use for as a stylist. Then I spotted a pair of their wide-leg carpenter trousers on a client, styled with a fitted ribbed tank and chunky loafers, and I immediately went home and ordered three pairs. I've been a convert ever since."
Dickies has had one of the most impressive brand transformations of the last decade. A workwear label with roots going back to 1920s Texas, it's now firmly embedded in streetwear, skate culture, and — increasingly — contemporary women's fashion. The wide-leg trousers have been on every fashion week street style account going, and the brand's relaxed, utilitarian aesthetic taps into exactly the kind of effortless dressing that a lot of us are currently obsessed with. But how does the sizing actually work?
How Dickies Sizes Its Women's Clothing
The key thing to understand about Dickies is that the brand was built for workwear — so the construction is sturdy, the fabrics are substantial, and the fit is intentionally relaxed. That's not a flaw; it's the point. But it does mean you should approach sizing with that in mind.
Trousers: Dickies women's trousers are measured in waist inches, much like jeans, rather than standard UK dress sizes. The fit is true to size in terms of leg length and overall cut, but the waist can run slightly snug on some styles. If you're between sizes, size up — you'll thank yourself later.
Tops and T-shirts: These have a noticeably relaxed, boxy cut. It's part of the brand's DNA, so don't be thrown off if your usual size feels roomier than expected. That said, they are consistently sized — pick your usual and you'll be fine.
Jackets and overshirts: Again, cut with a generous, relaxed silhouette. Most women find their regular size works perfectly, but if you prefer a more fitted look, you might want to go down one.
Dungarees and boilersuits: These can be a bit more variable. Check the specific product's inseam length too, as Dickies offers regular, short (petite), and tall fits on many styles.
The TikTok Sizing Trick (And Why It Matters)
If you've been on fashion TikTok at all in the past couple of years, you'll have seen the rolled-waistband Dickies look — where the wide-leg trousers sit low on the hip with the waistband turned down. It's a brilliant styling trick that gives the trousers an almost vintage, lived-in feel. But here's the thing: if you want to wear them this way, you absolutely need to size up by one or two sizes. The waistband needs to fit over the widest part of your hips before you roll it down, otherwise you simply won't get the look right — and the trousers will be uncomfortable all day.
If you're buying Dickies to wear them as intended — waistband up, sitting at the natural waist — your usual size will work perfectly.
Breaking Them In
One thing I'd flag is that Dickies trousers, particularly the cotton-twill styles, are quite stiff when new. This is normal and actually a sign of the quality construction. They soften considerably with wear and washing, and after a few washes, they feel completely different — much more relaxed and comfortable. Don't be put off by that initial stiffness; it settles down.
A handy tip I always give clients: give a new pair of Dickies a wash before you wear them for the first time. It takes the edge off that rigidity and helps them mould to your shape much faster.
Fit by Body Shape
The wide-leg and carpenter trouser styles are genuinely brilliant for most body shapes — the straight cut and high rise are forgiving and elongating in equal measure. If you have a more petite frame, I'd recommend opting for the short inseam option where available, or being prepared to get them hemmed (a minor alteration, but worth it). If you're taller, the regular or tall inseam works well.
For those with a curvier figure, Dickies also offers a Curvy Fit range on some trouser styles, which gives additional room through the hips and thighs while keeping the waist proportionate. It's worth looking out for this specifically if you find standard trouser waistbands tend to be too tight relative to your hip measurement.
My Honest Verdict on Dickies Sizing

Dickies is one of those brands where the sizing is pretty reliable once you understand how the brand is designed to fit. Take your usual size; size up if you're between sizes or want the TikTok waistband-down look; and don't panic about the initial stiffness of the fabric. If you're buying for a relaxed, utilitarian aesthetic, these will become some of the most-worn pieces in your wardrobe. Mine certainly are.
Similar Brands Worth Knowing — High Street
If you love the Dickies aesthetic but want more options, or you're looking for something slightly different in fit, here are some brilliant alternatives I'd point you towards:
Levi's — The original workwear-heritage brand with a women's range that now includes carpenter and wide-leg trousers in similar cotton twills. Sizing is fairly consistent with Dickies.
ASOS — Stocks a brilliant range of workwear-inspired trousers and utility pieces at various price points. Their own-brand wide-leg cargo trousers are particularly good value.
Urban Outfitters — A go-to destination for the streetwear-adjacent aesthetic that Dickies occupies. Their BDG range of straight and wide-leg trousers is very much in the same spirit.
Zara — Consistently delivers on the utilitarian trouser trend with each new season. Their carpenter and slouchy straight-leg styles often rival Dickies for silhouette, with slightly less rigidity in the fabric.
H&M — Solid affordable option for workwear-inspired basics. The quality isn't quite there for longevity, but for experimenting with the aesthetic without a big outlay, it works well.
Topshop (via ASOS) — The relaunched Topshop range has some excellent straight-leg and wide-leg trouser options in the same vibe. Sizing runs fairly true.
All Saints — If you want to take the utility aesthetic somewhere a little more refined, All Saints does it brilliantly. Their straight-cut trousers and overshirts have a similar sensibility but with a slightly more fashion-forward finish.
Abercrombie & Fitch — Their relaxed denim and twill trouser ranges have improved enormously in recent years and offer a very similar relaxed-fit silhouette with good size inclusivity.
Independent Brands to Put on Your Radar
Now, this is where it gets interesting. If you really want to lean into the workwear aesthetic with something a little more considered, these two independent brands are absolutely worth knowing about:
Stan Ray — An American workwear brand with an even longer heritage than Dickies (founded in 1972), and honestly one of the best-kept secrets in the space. Their painter trousers and fatigue pants are beautifully constructed, age brilliantly, and have a dedicated following among those in the know. Sizing is generous — go true to size.
Universal Works — A British independent brand based in Nottingham that does workwear-inspired clothing with real craft and longevity. Their trousers and overshirts are made to last and have a beautiful, understated quality. A brilliant investment piece if you're serious about the aesthetic.
Premium & Luxury Alternatives
If you're looking to trade up from the high street workwear aesthetic into something more investment-level:
Tommy Hilfiger — A strong premium option for relaxed-fit trousers and utility-inspired pieces with a clean, elevated finish.
Calvin Klein — Particularly good for the minimal, relaxed-fit end of the utilitarian spectrum. Their wide-leg denim and cotton trousers are exceptional quality.
Acne Studios — For true luxury with a strong utility undercurrent, Acne consistently delivers on wide-leg and carpenter trouser silhouettes in premium fabrics. A genuine wardrobe investment.
Balenciaga — The high-fashion reference point for the workwear-meets-streetwear aesthetic. Their wide-leg technical trousers carry Dickies' spirit with a couture price tag.
