What Is Sizing Like at DKNY?

DKNY generally runs true to size, but — and this is an important but — the brand uses US sizing as its base, and the cut varies noticeably across categories. Dresses and tailored pieces tend to run fitted and can feel snug at the bust and waist, while outerwear often comes up slim across the shoulders. Jeans and trousers, on the other hand, tend to be the most consistently sized pieces in the range. Bottom line: knowing your exact measurements before you buy makes a real difference here.

A Bit About DKNY

DKNY — Donna Karan New York — has been on my radar since I was flipping through 90s copies of Elle and coveting those clean, city-slick silhouettes. Founded in 1989 as a younger, more accessible diffusion line to Donna Karan's main label, it was the brand that made New York cool for a generation of women who wanted to dress with edge but still look polished at 9am on a Monday. Today, DKNY still delivers that urban sensibility — tailored separates, sleek knitwear, great outerwear and a strong denim offering — though the brand has evolved considerably and now feels very much of the moment in terms of its casual-meets-smart aesthetic.

In the UK you'll find DKNY at John Lewis, House of Fraser and ASOS, as well as directly via their own site. Sizing is presented in US sizes, which is the first thing to get your head around — a US 6 is roughly a UK 10, and so on.

The US to UK Size Conversion — What You Need to Know

DKNY's sizing is based on US measurements, which means you need to subtract approximately 4 from the US size to get your UK equivalent. Here's a quick reference:

This conversion is a solid starting point, but — as I've learnt the hard way after ordering a DKNY blazer that arrived looking like it belonged to someone a full size smaller than me — it really is worth knowing your measurements rather than relying on size alone. The cut varies too much across categories for a simple number-swap to be reliable every time.

How Does DKNY Fit Across Different Categories?

This is where it gets nuanced, and honestly where a lot of people go wrong with DKNY. It's not a brand where you can simply pick your usual size and trust it across the board.

  • Dresses & Jumpsuits: Tailored and fitted through the bodice. If you're fuller in the bust or waist, sizing up is sensible. The silhouettes are elegant but they're designed to skim, not drape — there isn't a lot of extra room built in.

  • Tops & Knitwear: Variable — some styles have a relaxed, oversized cut (particularly the casual knits and sweatshirts) while the more structured blouses run fitted. Check the product description carefully.

  • Jeans & Trousers: The most reliably true-to-size category. DKNY denim has a mid-rise fit and a sleek cut — input your waist and hip measurements for the most accurate result.

  • Outerwear & Blazers: This is where DKNY is most likely to catch you out. The coats and structured jackets tend to run slim across the shoulders and upper chest. If you have broader shoulders or plan to layer underneath, size up. I cannot stress this enough — a DKNY coat that's too tight across the back is non-negotiable to return.

  • Casual & Loungewear: DKNY Active and their casual sets often run slightly relaxed. You may actually find sizing down gives a neater fit if you want something more tailored-looking.

Fit Tips by Body Shape

Post Image

DKNY's aesthetic is very much built around a clean, unfussy urban look — which actually suits a wide range of body shapes brilliantly when you get the sizing right.

  • Pear shape: DKNY's A-line and wrap dresses are your friends. Their trousers can be slightly narrow through the hip, so try going up one size on the bottom and having the waist taken in if needed — it's worth it for a really sharp finish.

  • Apple shape: The brand's wrap and shift dresses are genuinely flattering. Look for styles with a defined waist tie or a slight flare through the skirt — these balance proportions beautifully.

  • Fuller bust: Size up in anything structured. The dresses in particular are cut close through the chest and there isn't much ease built in. A size up overall is far better than battling with a gaping neckline.

  • Petite: DKNY's midi and knee-length dresses work beautifully on a shorter frame. The maxi lengths can overwhelm — if you love a DKNY maxi, factor in a hem alteration.

  • Athletic/straight frame: Honestly, DKNY was almost designed for this. The clean, linear cuts and structured shoulders look incredibly sharp on a straighter silhouette.

Is DKNY Worth Buying? My Honest Take

Yes — particularly for outerwear, knitwear, and denim. These are the categories where DKNY really earns its price point. The coats in particular are investment pieces that look expensive and wear brilliantly over multiple seasons. I'm slightly more lukewarm on some of the dresses, where the competition at similar price points is fierce — but for city-smart workwear and weekend dressing with a bit of polish, DKNY consistently delivers.

If you're shopping DKNY for the first time, I'd suggest starting with their tailored trousers or a knit — these are the pieces with the most consistent sizing and the most impressive quality-to-price ratio.

If DKNY Isn't Quite Right for You — Alternatives at Every Budget

DKNY sits in that premium-but-not-designer sweet spot, and there are some brilliant alternatives depending on what you're after and what your budget looks like.

High street and accessible picks:

  • Massimo Dutti – My top pick for DKNY-adjacent dressing on the high street. Exceptionally well-made, consistently sized, and that same clean, city-ready aesthetic without the designer markup. Their tailored trousers and structured knitwear are outstanding.

  • COS – Minimal, architectural and brilliantly consistent on sizing. If you love DKNY's cleaner, more understated pieces, COS is a natural fit. The quality is genuinely impressive at the price point.

  • Calvin Klein – Practically DKNY's New York neighbour in spirit. Sharp denim, sleek tailoring and a very similar aesthetic. Sizing tends to be slightly more generous, which is useful if DKNY runs a touch small for you.

  • Tommy Hilfiger – A step more casual than DKNY but with a similarly polished American aesthetic. Great for weekend dressing and their outerwear competes very well at the price point.

  • Hugo Boss – If you love DKNY's tailored office-wear direction, Hugo Boss is the natural step up. The suiting and structured separates are excellent, and sizing is very consistent across the range.

  • Reiss – Brilliant for that same polished, work-to-weekend dressing. The tailoring quality at Reiss is genuinely excellent and they size consistently. A staple in my wardrobe and one I recommend constantly to clients.

  • All Saints – For the edgier, more downtown-NYC side of the DKNY aesthetic. If it's the leather jackets, sleek knitwear and a slightly more rock-and-roll sensibility you're after, All Saints delivers it brilliantly.

  • Zara – A word of warning: Zara sizing is notoriously inconsistent, but when a piece works, it really works. Their tailored blazers and structured coats frequently channel DKNY's city-chic energy at a fraction of the price. Just check measurements rather than relying on size labels.

Two independent picks — my left-field finds this month:

  • Kitri – A brilliant British independent that punches well above its weight on quality and cut. Their tailored separates and midi dresses have a really considered, grown-up feel — smart without being corporate. Sizing is consistent and the brand runs regular sales that make the price points very accessible.

  • Never Fully Dressed – Incredibly fun, incredibly flattering and genuinely inclusive on sizing. If you love the more playful side of DKNY — the wrap dresses, the printed separates — Never Fully Dressed does all of that with bags of personality and a much broader size range. A firm favourite with my clients who want something a bit more joyful.
