What Is Sizing Like at Dolce & Gabbana?

Dolce & Gabbana runs small — sometimes significantly so. The brand uses Italian sizing, which means the numbers look nothing like a UK label, and the cut itself is structured, close, and uncompromising. As a general rule, you'll want to size up at least one — and sometimes two — sizes from what you'd normally wear. If you've ever tried on a beautifully made D&G dress and wondered why the zip won't budge, you're not alone, and you're not the wrong size. You've just met Italian tailoring on its own terms.

I will admit, my first foray into D&G was a humbling experience. I grabbed what I thought was my equivalent size in their Italian numbering and confidently headed to the fitting room. Reader, it did not close. The second size up? Like a glove. That taught me everything I needed to know about shopping this brand — and I want to save you the same fitting-room drama.

Understanding Italian Sizing

Before anything else, you need to get comfortable with Italian sizing numbers, because D&G doesn't use UK labels. Here's your quick conversion guide:

  • IT 36 = UK 4 / EU 32

  • IT 38 = UK 6 / EU 34

  • IT 40 = UK 8 / EU 36

  • IT 42 = UK 10 / EU 38

  • IT 44 = UK 12 / EU 40

  • IT 46 = UK 14 / EU 42

  • IT 48 = UK 16 / EU 44

So if you're a UK 12 in most brands, your starting point at D&G is an IT 44. But — and this is the critical bit — because D&G cuts close, many customers find they need an IT 46 or even IT 48 to feel comfortable rather than compressed. That's not a failure on your part; it's just how the brand is designed.

How D&G Clothing Actually Fits

The brand's aesthetic is rooted in Sicilian sensuality — structured, body-conscious, and deliberately fitted. This is not a brand known for relaxed silhouettes or generous ease. Every piece is cut to hug, which means the sizing is unforgiving if you go in on your standard number.

  • Tailored jackets and blazers — these tend to run the most rigidly. With boning, structured seaming and no stretch whatsoever, a tailored D&G jacket really does require you to size up. If in doubt, go two sizes up and have it taken in if needed.

  • Dresses — close-cut dresses (the corset silhouettes, bustier styles, pencil cuts) run small. Anything with lycra or stretch fabric will be more forgiving, but structured silk or crepe dresses? Go up.

  • Skirts — fit varies. Pencil skirts are strict around the hip and waist; full or pleated skirts tend to be slightly more relaxed through the waist.

  • Knitwear and jersey — the one exception to the "size up" rule. Stretch fabrics behave far more like true to size. These are the pieces where your standard Italian conversion is more reliable.

  • Jeans and denim — D&G denim is cut slim. Check the waist measurement carefully — a UK 10 typically aligns with an IT 44 waist (28–29 inches), but if you have any curve through the hip, go up.

Ella's rule of thumb: At D&G, always take your UK size, convert it to the Italian equivalent using the chart above, then go one size up from there. For fitted structured pieces — two up. You can always tailor down; you cannot tailour yourself into something that won't zip.

D&G and Inclusive Sizing

It's worth noting that D&G has made genuine progress on size inclusivity in recent years. The brand now extends its women's range up to IT 54, which is approximately a UK 22 — a genuinely significant move for a luxury fashion house. If you're shopping at the larger end of the range, the same sizing advice applies: always check measurements item by item, because the cut and structure varies considerably across the collection.

Shoes and Footwear

Good news on the shoe front — D&G footwear is one of the more straightforward sizing stories at the brand. Their shoes generally run true to size in Italian/European sizing. A few caveats:

  • Heels and pumps — true to size, snug fit by design.

  • Sneakers — some styles (notably the Sorrento knit) can run small. Size up half a size if you're on the cusp.

  • Boots — measure your calf width as well as foot length, as D&G boots can be narrow through the shaft.

  • Italian shoe sizing to UK: EU 37 = UK 4, EU 38 = UK 5, EU 39 = UK 6, EU 40 = UK 7, EU 41 = UK 8.

Tips for Shopping D&G Online

Shopping D&G in a boutique is genuinely one of fashion's great pleasures — the staff are knowledgeable and the fitting experience is part of the whole thing. But for online shopping, here's what I'd recommend:

  • Always measure your bust, waist and hip before ordering and compare to the D&G product-level size chart (not just the brand's general guide).

  • Order two sizes where return policy allows — the difference between an IT 42 and IT 44 in a structured dress can be dramatic.

  • Read the fabric content carefully. Stretch fabrics = more forgiving. Rigid silk or brocade = go up, full stop.

  • Check the specific product description for fit notes — D&G have improved their online product detail considerably.

D&G's particular brand of Italian glamour — bold prints, structured tailoring, body-conscious cuts and that unmistakeable sense of drama — isn't cheap to replicate. But there are brilliant alternatives at every price point that capture the spirit.

High Street

  • Reiss — for structured tailoring with clean lines and a premium feel at high-street prices. Their blazers and tailored dresses are particularly strong and their sizing is reliably consistent.

  • Whistles — understated British elegance with beautifully cut pieces. Their silk blouses and midi skirts have a similar attention to fabric quality and silhouette without the Italian price tag.

  • Phase Eight — brilliant for event-dressing and occasion wear in the D&G spirit. Beautiful prints, structured bodices and proper occasion dresses that don't feel like a compromise.

  • Hobbs — a go-to for tailored pieces with a European sensibility. Their jackets in particular offer that same close, considered cut that makes D&G so appealing.

  • Ted Baker — floral prints, bodycon silhouettes and an unapologetically feminine aesthetic. Very much in the D&G lane in terms of attitude, and sizing is true-to-size with clear UK labelling.

  • Massimo Dutti — arguably the closest high-street equivalent to Italian tailoring. Their fabric quality and cut is genuinely impressive and they use European sizing, so the conversion logic is similar.

  • LK Bennett — the smart choice for occasion dressing with heritage styling. Their structured dresses and court shoes hit the same note of polished, unapologetic femininity.

  • Me&Em — quietly brilliant British brand with a loyal following for very good reason. Their tailored trousers and blazers are exceptionally well-cut, and sizing is transparent and consistent.

Premium

  • Self-Portrait — the go-to premium brand for D&G-adjacent glamour at a fraction of the price. Intricate lace, structured midi dresses and occasion pieces that photograph beautifully. A genuine crowd-pleaser.

  • Reformation — for the body-conscious, romantically-cut silhouettes without flying to Milan. Their sizing is detailed and honest, which makes a refreshing change.

Two Independent Picks Worth Knowing

  • Saloni — a London-based independent label with a devoted following among women who love print, colour and beautifully structured feminine dresses. Think D&G without the logomania — just pure, considered design. Their sizing is detailed and runs true to a UK label.

  • Kitri Studio — an independent London brand doing genuinely gorgeous occasion and everyday dressing with a real eye for colour and cut. Sizes 6–26, transparent sizing information, and pieces that regularly sell out for good reason. One to bookmark.
