What Is Sizing Like at Dondup?

Dondup runs small — typically half a size to a full size smaller than standard UK sizing — and if you're buying their denim for the first time, sizing up is almost always the right call. This is classic Italian luxury denim behaviour: the cut is precise, slim, and designed with a Continental silhouette in mind rather than the roomier proportions you might be used to from your usual high street brands. I say this as someone who has watched more than one client confidently order their usual size in a pair of Monroe skinnies and received a very expensive pair of trousers they couldn't do up.

It's one of those brands where knowing your measurements — not just your "usual size" — genuinely matters. And once you crack the code, you'll understand why Dondup has become one of the most quietly coveted premium denim labels around.

Who Is Dondup?

Dondup is an Italian premium denim brand founded in 2000, built on the idea that jeans could sit squarely between streetwear and luxury fashion. Based in the Veneto region of Italy — a heartland of fine fabric and craftsmanship — the brand spent its first decade mastering the art of the perfect-fitting jean before expanding into a full womenswear collection. Today they're stocked at Farfetch, Matches, Browns, and Net-a-Porter, and they sit comfortably in that elevated territory between Paige and Saint Laurent. Prices for jeans run from around £200 to £380, so getting your size right first time really does matter.

Their women's jeans range covers pretty much every silhouette going — from the iconic Monroe skinny to the Cindy regular fit, the Cristy wide-leg, the Koons loose fit, and the Rose slim. There's a lot to love, but the fit nuances vary slightly across styles.

How Does the Sizing Actually Work?

Dondup women's jeans are sized in inches (24–32 typically), not UK dress sizes, which is the first thing to get your head around. Their sizing runs consistently Italian — narrow through the hip and thigh, with a higher rise than you might expect from a brand known for its skinny styles. Here's how it breaks down by style:

  • Monroe (skinny fit): The most popular style and the one people most often get wrong. Runs at least half a size small — I'd say most UK women should size up one full inch. The stretch content helps, but these are a sculpted, body-close fit.

  • Kim (super skinny): Even more fitted through the ankle and calf. Size up a full inch without hesitation. These are brilliant once you've nailed the fit, but very unforgiving if you go too small.

  • Rose & Daila (slim fit): A little more generous than the Monroe. Still runs small by around half an inch — if you're between sizes, go up.

  • Cindy (regular fit): The most forgiving of the range. True to size or just slightly snug — a half-size up is safe if you're in between.

  • Cristy (wide-leg) & Koons (loose fit): The most relaxed cuts, and the easiest to size on. These tend to run true to size, so your usual denim inch measurement should work here without adjustment.

  • Tops, knitwear & shirts: Generally true to size but with a slim, Italian cut. If you have a fuller bust or broader shoulders, size up one.

  • Blazers & jackets: Consistently narrow through the chest and shoulder. Sizing up is strongly advised for most UK women.

The Italian Sizing Factor

It's worth saying a word about Italian sizing more broadly, because Dondup isn't an outlier — it's simply an honest expression of how Italian brands are made. Italian denim is cut to a straighter, slimmer hip-to-waist ratio than the UK average, which tends to have more allowance through the lower hip and thigh. This doesn't mean Italian denim is exclusively for slim figures — far from it — but it does mean you need to measure rather than guess. A client of mine who is a size 12 in M&S wears a 29 in Dondup. Another who is also a 12 takes a 30 in the Monroe because she carries more through the hip. Both fit perfectly once we matched by measurement rather than label.

The rule of thumb: always measure your natural waist and full hip before you buy, then match to Dondup's official size chart. Never just translate your UK dress size directly — it won't be accurate.

Dondup is a genuine investment — so if you love the look but want to test a similar aesthetic at a different price point first, here are some brilliant alternatives across three tiers:

🛍 HIGH STREET & ACCESSIBLE

  • Zara – Honestly one of the best high street options for slim-cut, Italian-inspired denim right now. Their premium denim lines are excellent quality for the price, and the silhouettes genuinely echo Dondup's aesthetic. Tends to run slim too, so size up.

  • Mango – Reliable for clean, Euro-cut jeans and trousers that share Dondup's minimalist sensibility. Great slim and straight-leg options at accessible prices.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch – Their denim has come on enormously in the last few years. Brilliant high-rise skinny and straight styles that rival premium brands in quality and fit.

  • COS – For the wide-leg and relaxed denim silhouette, COS is unbeatable at the high street level. Understated, well-made, and flattering in a quietly European way.

  • Whistles – Smart, grown-up denim and tailored trouser options. Particularly good if you're drawn to Dondup's more elevated, less streetwear-adjacent styling.

✨ PREMIUM

  • Citizens of Humanity – Perhaps the closest rival to Dondup in terms of quality, fit precision, and elevated casualness. Their Goldie and Margot styles are particularly exceptional.

  • Paige – American premium denim with a similarly sculpted, flattering fit. The Hoxton and Transcend styles are cult for good reason. More generous through the hip than Dondup.

  • Me&Em – British premium brand with brilliant jeans and trousers in elevated fabrics. Slightly more relaxed than Dondup but equally polished and very well sized for UK bodies.

  • Reiss – Tailored and sharp, particularly for straight-leg and wide-leg silhouettes. Great if you're after the Dondup polish without the Italian sizing challenge.

💎 LUXURY & DESIGNER

  • Max Mara – For the tailored trouser and jacket side of what Dondup does, Max Mara is the definitive Italian luxury answer. Impeccably cut, investment-grade quality.

  • Claudie Pierlot – French rather than Italian, but shares Dondup's affinity for precise, flattering cuts in elevated fabrics. Their denim and tailoring is beautiful.

And for something a little more left-field, I'd flag two independent brands worth exploring: Agolde, the Los Angeles-based denim label whose 90s-inspired cuts and impeccable stretch denim are causing quite the stir among fashion editors — a genuine cult find. And Boyish Jeans, a sustainable premium denim brand making beautifully crafted, well-fitting jeans from recycled materials that punch well above their price point. Neither is widely talked about in the UK yet, which makes them all the more worth knowing about.

My Honest Styling Verdict

Dondup is one of those brands that genuinely rewards the effort of getting sized properly. Once you know your number — and trust me, it's usually one size up from what you think — the denim is exceptional. The Monroe in particular is one of the best-fitting skinnies on the market: it sculpts without feeling punishing, holds its shape all day, and looks just as good with a blazer on a Tuesday morning as it does with heels on a Friday night. The Cindy regular and the Cristy wide-leg are also brilliant entry points if you're not a skinny-jean person.

Buy from a retailer with a good returns policy for your first Dondup purchase — or better yet, use a sizing tool that matches your actual measurements to their size chart. Which brings me neatly to...
