What Is Sizing Like at Donna Ida?

Always Honest, Unbiased, Unsponsored & Free Content.

Donna Ida sizes run on the designer denim system — the number on the label is roughly your natural waist in inches, not a UK dress size. So if your waist measures 27 inches, you're a 27, not a UK 10. That single fact catches out almost everyone the first time, and it's the bit I wish someone had told me before I confidently ordered a "12" years ago and ended up with jeans I could have fit two of me into. Get your head around the numbering and Donna Ida becomes one of the most reliable, true-to-size brands in premium denim.

I'm Ella Blake, Senior Fashion Stylist and founder of Tellar, and I've fitted a lot of women into a lot of jeans. Donna Ida — the label from Donna Ida Thornton, the so-called "Jean Queen" — is a British denim house built around flattering, high-waisted shapes with proper attention to cut. Here's exactly how it fits, where it trips people up, and what to buy.

How Donna Ida sizing actually works

Donna Ida lists sizes in the designer's own scheme, derived from waist measurements. Measure the smallest part of your waist in inches, and that number is your starting size. Simple, once you know — but worth a few pointers:

  • It's waist-in-inches, not UK 8/10/12. A 26-inch waist is a size 26. If you normally think in UK dress sizes, ignore that habit entirely here.

  • The waist generally fits true to size. Across the best-sellers, the denim is firm with just enough stretch, so it holds you in rather than gaping or sliding down. My own Donna Ida pair fit at my measured waist and haven't budged.

  • Rigid versus stretch matters. Styles in a stiffer, lower-stretch denim won't give much, so size honestly. Anything with a touch of Lycra moulds to you and recovers — if you're between sizes in those, you can usually take your true waist and trust the give.

  • The legs run long, by design. These are cut for heels — the house models are 5'9". The best-selling Kate, for instance, lands at a 32-inch inside leg. Gorgeous if you're tall; if you're petite, budget for a hem.

  • The high rises are genuinely high. The Minnie flare sits on a 13.4-inch rise. Brilliant for nipping in the waist and lengthening the leg, but check the rise on each style rather than assuming.

My honest stylist's advice for getting it right

Donna Ida is one of those brands where five minutes of prep saves you a return. A few things I'd tell any client:

  • Measure cold, over underwear, snug but not pulled tight. Then take that exact inch figure as your size. Don't round up "to be safe" — these jeans are meant to sit close.

  • If you're between sizes on a rigid style, size up. Stiff denim doesn't forgive. On stretch styles, stick with your true waist.

  • Plan for alterations and treat them as part of the price. Donna Ida actively encourage hemming, tapering and taking in the waist, and there's a clear logic to it: buy for the waist and hips, then perfect the length. A good tailor turns a near-miss into your favourite jeans.

  • Use the try-at-home option if you're unsure. They offer a home try service and 30-day free returns on full-price orders, so there's no need to gamble.

One genuine fail I'll own up to: I once bought a long flare online, didn't check the inside leg, and they pooled around my ankles like I'd borrowed them from someone a foot taller. Lesson learned — with Donna Ida, length is the thing to watch, not the waist.

Where to shop for the same fit — by budget

If you love the high-waisted, leg-lengthening Donna Ida look but want options across price points, here's where I'd send clients.

High street

  • Levi's — the original denim authority; the Ribcage high-rise is the most Donna Ida-ish shape on the high street.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch — quietly the most-praised denim of the moment, with a brilliant Curve Love range for hip-to-waist ratios.

  • Gap — dependable everyday denim and one of the widest fit-and-length grids around.

  • Uniqlo — clean, well-priced, surprisingly good stretch and recovery for the money.

  • Mango — fashion-forward cuts that chase the season's flares and wide legs.

  • Marks & Spencer — strong shaping denim and reliable sizing if you want zero drama.

  • Whistles — the most elevated, editorial denim before you cross into premium pricing.

Premium

  • Paige — Californian premium denim that fits true to size; their contour-stretch styles hug and hold beautifully.

  • AGOLDE — cult vintage-inspired cuts; the go-to for a relaxed, modelled-off-duty look.

  • Citizens of Humanity — consistently true to size with superb fabric and finishing.

Luxury / designer

  • Totême — Scandi minimalism in denim form; clean, architectural, expensive-looking.

  • Max Mara — for tailored, polished denim that sits alongside proper designer pieces.

Two off-the-radar independents worth knowing

  • E.L.V. Denim — a London label reworking vintage denim into one-off pairs; genuinely sustainable and properly editorial.

  • MUD Jeans — a Dutch circular-denim pioneer you can even lease; lovely fits and a real conscience behind them.
