What Is Sizing Like at Dr Denim?

TELLAR FASHION HUB  ·  SIZING GUIDES

By Ella Blake — Fashion Stylist  |  Tellar Fashion Hub — Always honest, unbiased, & unsponsored

Dr Denim generally runs slightly small — particularly in rigid cotton styles — so if you're between sizes, I'd always recommend sizing up.

I first came across Dr Denim years ago, scrolling ASOS at some ungodly hour, as one does. A pair of the Nora jeans in a gorgeous vintage blue kept appearing in my feed, and I thought: Swedish denim brand, affordable price point, can't be that good. Reader, I bought them in my usual size. They arrived, I wrestled them on, and declared them perfect — until I sat down and realised the waistband had other ideas. Lesson learned. One size up later, and I was utterly converted.

If you're new to Dr Denim, it's a Swedish brand that's been quietly doing excellent things since 2004. Think clean Scandinavian lines, a brilliant range of fits, and a price point that sits comfortably between high street and premium denim. It's a bit of a cult buy once you know your size — and that's exactly what we're here to sort out.

How Does Dr Denim Size Its Jeans?

This is where a lot of UK shoppers get caught out. Dr Denim primarily uses inch-based waist and inseam sizing — so instead of a UK 10 or 12, you'll be choosing something like a 28/30 or 27/32. That first number is your waist in inches; the second is your inside leg length.

Some styles — particularly tops, knitwear, and certain denim cuts — do use standard XS–XL sizing, which broadly aligns to UK sizing. But the jeans? Always go by the inch measurement, and always check the fabric content before you commit to a size.

Why fabric content matters more than you'd think

This is the bit most people skip, and it really shouldn't be. Dr Denim spans a wide range of fabric blends across their styles — and how much (or how little) a pair stretches will completely change your sizing experience:

  • 100% cotton styles (like the Echo and Nora) are rigid. They'll give a little with wear, but they won't mould to your shape the way a stretch denim will. These are the styles where sizing up is most likely to save you.

  • Elastane or modal blends (like the Lexy skinny) have genuine stretch. These are more forgiving and some people even find they can size down for a sleeker fit.

  • Always check the product description. The stretch (or lack of it) is the single biggest factor in whether Dr Denim will fit you as expected.

The Key Styles — And How They Fit

The Echo — regular fit, sky-high waist

The Echo is a brilliant all-rounder: regular fit, sky-high waist, five pockets, clean finish. It's made in 100% cotton, which means it's structured and holds its shape beautifully — but it won't stretch to accommodate you. If you're fuller in the hip or thigh, go up a size without hesitation. The waist can be taken in slightly with a belt if needed, but squeezing into too-tight hips is never a good look.

The Nora — the iconic mum fit

The Nora is arguably Dr Denim's most famous style, and rightly so. It's a high-waisted, slightly tapered leg with a relaxed seat — essentially the perfect mum jean. Also 100% cotton, it fits true to size according to most reviewers, though I'd still suggest measuring your waist in inches and going from there rather than guessing. Available in an impressive range of washes, from clean dark indigo to vintage stone. This is the style that made me a fan.

The Lexy — skinny with stretch

The Lexy is Dr Denim's answer to the skinny jean, with a mid-rise waist and a genuine second-skin fit thanks to its stretch content. This is the one style where you might consider staying true to size, or even sizing down if you want that really sleek finish. The stretch means it moves with you — but it also means it can loosen slightly with wear, so don't go too big.

General Fit Tips From Someone Who's Learned the Hard Way

  • Measure your waist in inches — this is the most reliable way to shop Dr Denim. A soft tape measure, around the narrowest part of your natural waist. Don't suck in; just stand normally.

  • If you're between sizes, go up — especially for the pure cotton styles. A slightly loose waist is easy to handle; too-tight hips are not.

  • Consider your inseam length carefully — Dr Denim offers 30" and 32" leg options on most styles. If you're petite (under 5'4"), the 30" option will often work as a full-length jean without needing alteration. If you're taller, 32" is your friend.

  • Don't compare to your Zara or H&M size — Dr Denim follows a more European grade, which tends to come up slightly smaller than British high street sizing. Your usual UK 10 may well be a 27 or 28 in Dr Denim, not a 26.

  • Check the stretch percentage — even 1–2% elastane makes a significant difference to how a jean behaves. If the listing says "rigid" or 100% cotton, size up. If it mentions stretch, you're probably fine at your measured size.

Whether Dr Denim doesn't have your size, or you just fancy exploring, here are my honest picks across every price point for great denim.

HIGH STREET

  • Levi's — the gold standard of accessible denim. Inch sizing like Dr Denim, brilliant for straight and barrel legs, and the quality is hard to beat at this price point.

  • Mango — consistently brilliant for slim and straight cuts, and their high-waisted styles often have a lovely clean finish that's very much in the Dr Denim spirit.

  • Zara — polarising, but I'll defend Zara's denim. Their straight-leg and barrel-leg styles are genuinely great, and they refresh frequently.

  • ASOS — where I'd send anyone who struggles with fit. The sheer volume of styles, washes, lengths, and fits means you're almost guaranteed to find something that works.

  • Topshop (now via ASOS) — the Jamie jean is still one of the best high-waisted straight-leg cuts available at this price. If you love the Nora, give it a try.

  • Urban Outfitters — particularly good for the slouchy, vintage-feel denim that Dr Denim also does well. Their BDG range has some excellent relaxed fits.

  • AllSaints — brilliant for a slightly edgier, less polished denim look. Their cuts are flattering and the fabric quality steps up noticeably from fast fashion.

  • Whistles — for when you want something elevated without the premium price tag. Their denim is beautifully finished and tends to hold its shape really well through wear.

PREMIUM

  • Citizens of Humanity — exceptional quality, brilliant fits, and worth every penny if you wear jeans daily. The Isla and Jolene styles are particular favourites of mine.

  • Paige — possibly the most flattering denim I've ever put on. The stretch fabrics are genuinely innovative and the sizing is consistent. A proper investment piece.

LUXURY / DESIGNER

  • Rag & Bone — impeccable construction, a truly considered fit, and the sort of denim that gets better with every wash. A wardrobe staple for life.

  • Frame Denim — the Le High Straight is a near-perfect jean. Expensive, yes, but the cut and the quality make it one of those pieces you'll be wearing in ten years.

INDEPENDENT PICKS

  • Nudie Jeans — a Swedish brand with a serious sustainability focus and genuinely beautiful organic denim. Repair programmes, incredible fades, and fit options that rival anything in this list. A brilliant Dr Denim step-up.

  • Mud Jeans — a Dutch circular denim brand I've been recommending more and more lately. They lease jeans (yes, really), use recycled and organic cotton, and the fit is thoughtful and relaxed. Completely under the radar and absolutely worth knowing about.
