What Is Sizing Like at Elvine? A Stylist's Honest Guide

Elvine sizing is based on European measurements and generally runs true to size — but there are two things you genuinely need to know before you order: your chest measurement matters more than anything else here, and if you're under about 5'4" (164cm), you'll almost certainly want to size down. Miss those two details and you're likely to end up swimming in fabric, wondering why your expensive Swedish jacket looks like it belongs to someone else entirely.

I've been a fan of Elvine for a while now — it's a Gothenburg-born brand that's essentially built its entire reputation on making exceptional outerwear. Founded in 2001 and named after the founder's grandmother (which, as brand origin stories go, is genuinely lovely), Elvine has become the go-to for anyone who wants a jacket that actually deals with proper winter weather without looking like they've raided a ski resort lost property box. The brand is sometimes called "the jacket specialist" and honestly, that title is earned.

How Elvine Sizes Actually Work

Elvine uses European sizing — XXS through to XXL — and their size system is thoughtfully designed. Here's what sets it apart: between each size, Elvine increases the width by 6cm across the chest, waist, and seat. But crucially, it's not just the width that changes. Sleeve length, shoulder width, and the overall length of the garment all shift proportionally between sizes too. This means the coat looks balanced and intentional whether you're wearing an XXS or an XL — it's not just a larger tent version of the smaller size.

The brand is very upfront that body measurements and garment measurements are not the same thing. Of course they're not — you need room to move, to layer underneath, to breathe. With outerwear especially, Elvine deliberately builds in extra ease. A padded winter coat needs more room than a lightweight layer, and their cuts reflect that.

Their own guidance is to use chest measurement and height as your two primary reference points. And I'd second that entirely.

The Petite Fit Issue — Pay Attention to This

Here's the thing that catches people out most often. Elvine explicitly states that if you're 164cm (about 5'4") or shorter, you can — and should — choose one size smaller than the size chart would suggest. And having seen this happen in practice, I really can't stress it enough.

Because Elvine's sizing scales proportionally — length, sleeve, shoulder, body — a woman who is 5'2" and takes a chest measurement that puts her in a size M will find that M is simply too long in the sleeve and body. It overwhelms the frame. Sizing down to a S gives you a much better silhouette, even if the chest measurement technically says otherwise.

I had a client — absolute legend, 5'3", brilliant taste — who ordered an Elvine coat online in what should have been her size. It arrived and the sleeves were almost at her knuckles. She was devastated. She reordered a size down and it was completely transformed. Lesson learned for both of us.

Sizing by Category — What to Expect

  • Coats and padded jackets: The hero category. True to size for most women of average height, but size down if you're petite. Bear in mind these are cut with room to layer a chunky knit underneath — if you prefer a slimmer, more streamlined look, size down regardless of your height.

  • Lightweight and transitional jackets: These have less built-in ease than the padded styles. True to size works well here for most women.

  • Knitwear and basics: Elvine has expanded beyond outerwear into everyday basics — T-shirts, sweatshirts, trousers. These follow standard European sizing and are generally consistent, though some customer reviews note slight variation between products in the same size.

  • Trousers: Sized in inches. Measure your waist carefully and refer to the size chart specifically for bottoms rather than assuming your usual size carries over from tops.

Who Is Elvine Best For?

Honestly, Elvine is one of those brands where the design philosophy is genuinely coherent. It's Scandinavian minimalism meets proper functional clothing — clean lines, a restrained palette, and construction that's designed to handle actual weather. The aesthetic isn't trying to be fashionable in a trend-led way; it's aiming for something more considered and lasting.

It works brilliantly for:

  • Women who want outerwear that genuinely protects them without looking utilitarian

  • Anyone who values a brand with a clear, consistent aesthetic across seasons

  • Women who layer heavily in winter and need that room factored into the cut

  • Taller women who often find that sleeve length in UK high street brands falls short — Elvine's proportional scaling is a genuine win here

Where it's more complicated: petite women need to be more deliberate with sizing, and the price point (coats regularly sit above £300) means getting the size wrong on a first order is genuinely annoying. Buying in-store or using a sizing tool before you order is really the smart move here.

The Best Alternatives to Elvine for Women

If Elvine's aesthetic appeals but you want a wider choice of retailers, accessible price points, or simply more options to try in person, these are the brands I'd point you towards — all brilliant for outerwear in particular:

  • Whistles – Quietly excellent outerwear that hits that same considered, grown-up sweet spot as Elvine. Their coats are well-cut and reliable across sizes. A brilliant high street option for Elvine fans.

  • Superdry – Functional, robust, and widely available. Their jackets handle British weather well and sizing is generally consistent. Great if you want that outdoorsy, practical feel at a more accessible price.

  • Seasalt Cornwall – Fantastic for relaxed, weather-resistant outerwear with a distinctly British coastal sensibility. Sizing tends to be reliable and their waterproof layers are genuinely good.

  • All Saints – For the edgier, more urban take on a quality outer layer. Their leather and suede jackets in particular have a very different flavour to Elvine but the same quality-first ethos.

  • Hush – One of my favourite under-the-radar high street recommendations for women who want something a bit more considered than the obvious choices. Great coats, sensible sizing, and a really wearable aesthetic.

  • Timberland – If functionality is your priority, Timberland's women's outerwear is seriously underrated. Robust, well-sized, and properly weatherproof.

  • COS – Perfect for that clean Scandinavian minimalism that defines Elvine's look. COS is cut with a similar restraint and their sizing is generally generous and consistent, running slightly large.

  • Joules – For countryside-ready outerwear with brilliant waterproofing and a cheerful colour palette. Their sizing is reliable and they cater well across the size range.

Two Independent Brands Worth Discovering

I always include a couple of brands that fly slightly under the radar, because some of the best outerwear out there isn't on the high street at all.

  • Stutterheim – A Swedish rainwear brand with an almost cult following. Their raincoats are iconic and beautifully made. If you love Elvine's Scandinavian design DNA, Stutterheim is the logical next step up. Sizing is European and runs fairly true.

  • Rains – A Danish brand that makes some of the most elegant, minimal waterproof outerwear you can buy. Their puffer jackets and longline coats are exceptional. Sizing runs slightly small, so size up if you're between sizes.
