What Is Sizing Like at Evisu?

Evisu sizing runs small — particularly in women's styles — and you should expect to go up at least one size from your usual UK label, sometimes two, especially in jeans and anything made with the brand's signature raw selvedge denim. This is a Japanese heritage brand calibrated to Japanese sizing conventions, and if you go in expecting it to behave like your Levi's or your Zara, you're setting yourself up for a very expensive return.
I have a deep, slightly obsessive respect for Evisu. Founded in Osaka in 1991, it's one of the original premium Japanese denim houses — the brand that essentially kicked off the global appetite for selvedge denim and hand-crafted jeans before most people knew what selvedge even meant. The hand-painted seagull logo. The meticulous construction. The extraordinary fabric. It's a brand built on genuine craftsmanship, and that makes getting the size right feel all the more important. Because Evisu jeans aren't cheap, and sending them back because you guessed wrong is deeply frustrating — trust me on that one.
Why Does Evisu Sizing Feel So Different?
There are two things going on here that are worth understanding before you buy. First, Evisu uses international sizing that tracks closely to Japanese size conventions — which typically run narrower and shorter than standard UK or EU sizing. Women's fits in particular are cut for a more petite Japanese frame: narrower through the hip, shorter in the rise, and more fitted through the thigh than you'd expect from a comparable Western denim brand.
Second — and this is crucial for the jeans specifically — much of Evisu's denim is unsanforised or selvedge, meaning it hasn't been pre-shrunk. That's precisely what makes it so special (the way it fades and moulds to your body over time is genuinely beautiful), but it also means the jeans will shrink with washing and wear. Experienced selvedge denim buyers know to size up to account for this. First-timers often get caught out. Don't be a first-timer.
How to Size for Evisu — By Category
Jeans — signature selvedge & raw denim: Size up by one to two sizes as standard. If you're a UK 10 (roughly a 28" waist), you'll likely need a 29" or 30" in Evisu raw denim once shrinkage is factored in. The waist and thigh are the tightest points; the leg can be more generous depending on cut.
Jeans — washed & stretch styles: These are somewhat more forgiving but still run small. I'd still recommend sizing up by one as your starting point, particularly if you're fuller through the hip.
Tops & graphic tees: Evisu tees tend to be snug through the chest and shoulders. If you're used to an oversized fit or are broader across the back, go up a size without hesitation. The women's cuts also run short in the body, so if you're on the taller side, factor that in too.
Hoodies & sweatshirts: These follow Asian sizing closely, which can mean a UK medium needs an Evisu large or even XL depending on the specific piece. Don't let vanity talk you into a size you can't comfortably wear — the hoodies are worth the investment but only if they actually fit.
Denim jackets: Cropped and fitted is the Evisu jacket DNA. Size up by one, and check the shoulder measurement in the size chart before committing. Shoulder fit on a structured denim jacket is near-impossible to alter once you've bought it.
Dresses & skirts: Size up by one as a minimum. These pieces are cut with the same narrow Japanese frame in mind and the hip measurement is usually the most limiting factor.
Evisu Women's Size Guide
Evisu uses waist-based sizing for jeans (labelled in inches) rather than UK dress sizes, which can add another layer of confusion. Here's a general women's conversion to help you navigate:
Evisu Waist LabelApproximate UK SizeWaist (cm)Hip (cm)24"UK 4–661cm86cm25"UK 6–864cm89cm26"UK 866cm91cm27"UK 8–1069cm94cm28"UK 1071cm96cm29"UK 10–1274cm99cm30"UK 1276cm101cm31"UK 12–1479cm104cm32"UK 1481cm106cm
My strongest advice: measure your actual waist and hips with a tape measure before ordering. Don't work backwards from your usual dress size. Evisu's own FAQ acknowledges that sizes can vary greatly between collections and explicitly recommends checking the measurements on each individual product page — which tells you everything you need to know about how consistent the sizing isn't.
The Evisu Fits Worth Knowing About

Evisu has several distinct fit lines, and knowing which one you're looking at makes a real difference:
No.1 & No.2 selvedge: The heritage originals. Stiffer, denser fabric, more pronounced shrinkage. Size up two from your usual. These are the ones denim obsessives fall for — and they're worth every penny if you get the size right.
Evisu Genes: Generally more relaxed in cut than the heritage selvedge styles. Customer feedback suggests these run closer to true-to-size, though still on the narrower side. Size up by one to be safe.
Contemporary & seasonal collections: These vary. Some are cut with a more Western fit in mind and run closer to UK sizing norms. Always check the individual product size tab before ordering.
How to Style Evisu in 2025
Evisu is having a major cultural moment right now — driven largely by the streetwear revival and a renewed appetite for premium Japanese denim with genuine provenance. The way I'd style it has shifted a little from its early-2000s heyday. It's less about head-to-toe Evisu and more about letting one piece anchor a considered outfit:
Evisu straight-leg or wide-leg jeans with a simple tucked white shirt and loafers — the jeans do the talking, everything else stays quiet.
An Evisu graphic tee half-tucked into tailored wide-leg trousers with a sharp blazer — streetwear meets polish.
The Evisu denim jacket layered over a slip dress with white trainers. It's a combination that works year-round and photographs brilliantly.
Vintage or secondhand Evisu (the seagull-logo pieces especially) styled into an otherwise clean, minimal outfit. The contrast is the point.
High Street, Premium & Designer Alternatives to Evisu
Evisu is genuinely special, but it's also genuinely expensive — and the sizing complexity means it's not always the easiest brand to buy online without trying first. These alternatives hit similar notes at different price points:
High street:
Levi's — The most obvious starting point for anyone who loves denim as a philosophy, not just a fabric. Levi's 501s and 505s offer heritage credentials at a far more accessible price, with reliable and consistent UK sizing.
ASOS — Stocks Evisu directly, plus a huge range of Japanese-influenced and premium denim alternatives. Free returns makes size-experimenting considerably less risky.
Abercrombie & Fitch — Their denim has genuinely improved dramatically in recent years. Wide-leg and straight-leg styles in particular are excellent quality with accurate, inclusive sizing.
All Saints — Shares Evisu's darker, more considered aesthetic. Not Japanese denim, but the quality of their denim jackets and straight-leg jeans is solid, and sizing is consistently true to UK standards.
Mango — Brilliant for wide-leg and straight-leg silhouettes that track current trends. Good fabric quality at the price point and consistently sized across the range.
Topshop (via ASOS) — The Topshop denim edit is still one of the best on the high street for a clean, considered straight-leg or wide-leg jean. Sizing runs true to UK standard.
Tommy Hilfiger — Heritage denim brand with strong logo credentials and excellent size consistency. The gap between Tommy and Evisu in terms of branding clout is smaller than the price gap suggests.
Premium:
Paige — Premium American denim with brilliant fit across a wide range of body types. Sizing runs true to size and the quality is exceptional. A strong alternative for anyone who finds Evisu's sizing too difficult to navigate.
Citizens of Humanity — Another premium denim brand worth serious consideration. The fit across their women's range is outstanding — particularly in wide-leg and barrel styles — and sizing is reliable and generous.
Calvin Klein — Their jeans are an Evisu alternative with serious heritage of their own. Classic, refined, and consistently sized. The premium CK denim range is particularly strong right now.
Luxury & designer:
Dsquared2 — Canadian-Italian label that shares Evisu's love of heavily crafted, statement denim. Bold, unapologetic and genuinely excellent quality. Sizing runs small so the same rules apply.
Amiri — For those who want Japanese-influenced craft with a Californian rock-and-roll edge. Extraordinarily well-made and sized in US inches like Evisu. Size up here too.
For my two independent picks this post, I want to flag Nudie Jeans — a Swedish brand doing beautiful organic selvedge denim with a far more navigable sizing system than Evisu and a brilliant repair programme (they'll mend your jeans for free, for life). And Jeanerica, a lesser-known Scandinavian denim label quietly producing some of the best-fitting heritage-style jeans in the world right now. Both are genuinely worth seeking out.
