What Is Sizing Like at Farm Rio?

Farm Rio sizing is inconsistent — and that's not me being harsh, that's just the honest truth you need to hear before you spend £200 on a dress. The brand runs anywhere from true to size to two sizes small depending on the style, the cut, and the fabric. I've been recommending Farm Rio to clients for years (the prints are genuinely joyful and the quality is excellent), but I've also watched a lot of those clients go through the frustrating cycle of ordering, returning, ordering again. It doesn't have to be that way — you just need to know what you're dealing with before you buy.

The Honest Sizing Verdict: It Depends on the Style

Farm Rio is a Brazilian brand founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1997, and it has grown into one of the most recognisable names in bold, print-led womenswear. The aesthetic is vivid, the fabrics are gorgeous, and the brand has a genuine sustainability commitment. But the sizing? It is not one-size-fits-all advice territory. Here's what you actually need to know:

  • Fitted, structured dresses with woven fabrics and no stretch: these run small — sometimes by one full size, occasionally by two. This is the category where the most returns happen. If in doubt, size up.

  • Smocked bodice styles: much more forgiving. The elasticated top adjusts across a range of bust sizes and these typically run true to size, occasionally slightly large. One of the most reliable fits in the range.

  • Flowing, tiered maxi dresses: tend to run true to size or slightly large. The waistline is often adjustable with ties, which helps enormously. This is where Farm Rio really flatters a wide range of body shapes.

  • Oversized and relaxed silhouettes: can run very large — some reviewers report needing to go one or even two sizes down. Always check the product description to see whether a piece is described as "easy fit" or "oversized."

  • Puffer jackets and outerwear: have historically run large. Recent collections have been reported running two sizes big. Definitely size down here.

  • Graphic tees and casual tops: typically run large by design — the oversized fit is intentional.

  • Separates (skirts and trousers): sizing is more consistent here. True to size in most cases, though non-stretch fabrics can feel snug if you're curvier through the hips. Check your hip measurement against the chart.

Why Is Farm Rio Sizing So Inconsistent?

It comes down to the sheer range of what Farm Rio makes, and the fact that many of their fabrics have little to no stretch. Unlike a stretchy jersey brand where the fabric does some of the fitting work for you, Farm Rio's signature cotton and viscose fabrics are often quite rigid. When a garment is cut small and the fabric doesn't give — you feel it immediately. Add to that the fact that they use both fitted and deliberately oversized silhouettes within the same season, and it's easy to see why the sizing experience can feel like a lottery.

The good news is that Farm Rio actually provides product-level measurements on each listing (not just size chart measurements, but the actual garment measurements). This is genuinely useful — once you know your own measurements, you can compare them directly against what the item actually measures. It takes an extra minute but it's worth doing.

UK Sizing at Farm Rio — How to Translate

Farm Rio uses US alpha sizing (XXS through to XL), which maps to UK sizing as follows — but remember, the slim-cut pieces often need you to go one size up from these conversions:

  • XS = UK 6–8 (bust 32–33", waist 26–27", hip 35–36")

  • S = UK 8–10 (bust 34–35", waist 28–29", hip 37–38")

  • M = UK 12 (bust 36–37", waist 30–31", hip 39–40")

  • L = UK 14 (bust 38–40", waist 32–34", hip 41–43")

  • XL = UK 16 (bust 41–44", waist 35–37", hip 44–46")

The range currently goes up to XL, which is one of the more common criticisms levelled at the brand — the extended sizing is limited. For those who typically wear a UK 18+, Farm Rio is genuinely restricted and I'd always check availability before spending time browsing.

How to Measure Before You Order

Given the inconsistency, measuring before you buy Farm Rio is non-negotiable — especially if you're ordering online. You need three measurements:

  • Bust: measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape parallel to the floor. This is the most important measurement for Farm Rio's fitted dresses.

  • Natural waist: measure around the narrowest part of your torso. For smocked and tie-waist styles, this one is less critical — but it matters for fitted and structured pieces.

  • Hips: measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat. For anything with a fitted skirt section, this is your determining measurement.

Once you have those, use the Tellar Store Size Lookup tool to cross-reference against Farm Rio's sizing — it matches your measurements directly to the brand so you're not left guessing.

Style Advice: Which Farm Rio Pieces Are Worth Buying?

Post Image

Let me be clear: the brand is worth the effort. When Farm Rio gets it right, the pieces are genuinely special — vivid, joyful, brilliantly made, and surprisingly flattering. Here's where I'd put my money:

  • Smocked bodice maxi dresses: my top recommendation for anyone new to the brand. The elasticated top is forgiving across bust sizes, the silhouette is universally flattering, and the prints are stunning. Buy your true size and go from there.

  • Tiered and ruffled midis: great for pear shapes in particular. The volume sits on the lower half and the waist is usually defined with a tie. True to size and one of the more consistent fits.

  • Midi wrap dresses: brilliant for anyone with a defined waist. These are cut to follow the body and the wrap front adjusts to fit. True to size, very wearable.

  • Printed co-ords: the matching sets are genuinely good value because you get two pieces. Check the sizing notes on each piece individually — tops and bottoms don't always have the same advice.

  • The puffer jackets: honestly a cult item for good reason. Incredibly fun, brilliant quality, and a total conversation starter. Just size down — they run very large.

High Street Alternatives for the Farm Rio Aesthetic

Farm Rio dresses typically sit in the £150–£300 range. If you love the bold print, floaty silhouette energy but want options at other price points, here's where I'd look:

  • Anthropologie — the most direct high street comparison to Farm Rio's aesthetic. They stock a curated mix of print-led, feminine dresses and have actually stocked Farm Rio itself through their platform. A brilliant first stop for the same vibe.

  • Monsoon — consistently brilliant for bold printed occasion dressing at an accessible price. Their maxi dresses in particular have real Farm Rio energy — vibrant prints, floaty fabrics, and genuinely flattering cuts.

  • Oliver Bonas — one of the UK's best kept secrets for print-led womenswear. Their dress range is full of colour and personality, and sizing is reliably consistent. Excellent quality for the price.

  • Boden — for a more classic take on bold British prints. Their cotton dresses and co-ords are beautifully made, and the sizing is straightforward and honest. A great alternative if you want prints without the uncertainty.

  • Oasis — a strong high street option for printed midi and maxi dresses with a feminine, occasion-ready feel. Good seasonal print collections and reliable sizing.

  • Warehouse — underrated for print dresses with personality. Their occasionwear range often delivers strong pattern and silhouette combinations at very accessible prices.

  • Urban Outfitters — for a younger, more relaxed take on the bold print trend. Their boho and vintage-inspired dresses capture some of the Farm Rio joie de vivre without the premium price tag.

  • Zara — particularly good for printed shirt dresses, co-ords and midi lengths with strong seasonal colour stories. Keep an eye on the printed linen and satin options specifically.

Two Independent Brands Worth Knowing

If you love the Farm Rio spirit but want to explore beyond the main players, these two smaller brands are genuinely brilliant:

  • Agua by Agua Bendita — a Colombian brand with deeply similar DNA to Farm Rio. The prints are extraordinary — hand-painted, richly coloured, and entirely distinctive. The quality is exceptional and the brand has a strong sustainability ethos. It's slightly harder to find in the UK (Net-a-Porter stocks it) but absolutely worth seeking out if you're a Farm Rio devotee.

  • Alemais — an Australian brand that has built a serious following for its beautifully crafted print dresses. Inspired by the natural world, the prints feel artistic rather than loud, and the garment construction is excellent. A more refined take on the same bold-print philosophy. Stocked at Matches and selected boutiques.
