What Is Sizing Like at Finery London? Does Finery Run Big or Small?

Finery London generally runs true to size, but here's the thing — that answer only tells half the story. Their woven, non-stretch pieces (and there are a lot of them) leave almost no wiggle room, which means the difference between a 12 that fits beautifully and a 12 that gapes at the bust or pulls across the hips can come down to millimetres. So yes, start with your usual size, but read on before you click buy — because certain categories at Finery need a rethink.

My Finery Story (A Cautionary Tale)

I first discovered Finery a few years back — a friend turned up to dinner in the most stunning printed midi dress, effortlessly chic in that quiet, understated way that makes you instantly jealous. I went straight home and ordered the same style in a different print. My usual size. Didn't even check the size guide. Big mistake.

It arrived beautifully packaged, looked incredible on the hanger, and then — the zip wouldn't budge past my ribs. Not a little tight. Just completely, humiliatingly stuck. The fabric was a non-stretch woven crepe and I had absolutely zero extra give to call on. Lesson learned, the hard way. Now I always check whether a Finery piece is structured or fluid before I order, and I use Tellar's Store Size Lookup to double-check my exact size against their current size chart before committing.

How Finery Sizing Generally Works

Finery is a modern British womenswear label — founded in London, with a focus on contemporary tailoring, clean silhouettes and prints that feel genuinely original rather than trend-chasing. Their range covers everything from structured blazers and wide-leg trousers to fluid dresses and knitwear, and that breadth is exactly why sizing is so nuanced.

Here's what I've found across the range:

  • Dresses (fluid, jersey or relaxed cuts): Generally true to size and forgiving. If you're between sizes, stay at your usual — the looser silhouettes are designed to drape rather than cling.

  • Structured dresses and fitted occasionwear: These can run slightly small — particularly at the bust and hip. If you're fuller-busted or have more curve at the hip, sizing up is a sensible move.

  • Tailored trousers and wide-leg styles: True to size on width, but their trousers have a known habit of running long in the leg. If you're 5'4" or under, check whether a short or petite length is available.

  • Knitwear and cardigans: True to size, and often slightly relaxed in the body — a 12 gives you a 12 fit, not a 10 squeezed into a 12.

  • Blazers and structured jackets: Size up if you're wearing a substantial layer underneath, or if you have broader shoulders — the structure can feel restrictive at the standard fit.

  • Jeans and denim: Finery's denim tends to be true to size, with a comfortable, relaxed fit rather than anything spray-on. Their wide-leg and high-waisted styles have been praised for their flattering cut across multiple body shapes.

Does Finery Run Small, Big or True to Size?

The short answer: mostly true to size, with exceptions in fitted categories. Their sizing has actually shifted slightly over the years — earlier collections were noted by many shoppers (myself included) as running slightly small, which led to the habit of sizing up. More recently, the brand appears to have adjusted, and some long-standing Finery fans have found their usual "sized up" pick now feels too generous.

It's the kind of inconsistency that makes brand-specific knowledge genuinely valuable. A brand that's "adjusted" its sizing across a season or two without announcement is exactly the reason I built Tellar's sizing tool — more on that shortly.

Finery's Size Range — Who Does It Cater For?

Post Image

One thing Finery deserves genuine credit for: their size range. Most pieces go from a UK 8 up to a UK 24, with a good number of styles also available in regular, short and petite lengths for trousers — though availability does vary by style, so it's worth filtering early before you fall in love with something. Extended sizing is offered across their core categories, which makes them one of the more inclusive options at this price point.

The Fabric Factor — Why It Matters More Than You Think

I always say this to clients and I'll say it here too: the fabric composition matters more than the number on the label. Finery's identity is rooted in quality, thoughtfully constructed pieces — which often means woven crepes, structured dobby fabrics, and textured weaves that look beautiful but have zero stretch. These are the pieces that expose sizing errors mercilessly.

Contrast that with their jersey dresses, ponte trousers or knit cardigans, which are naturally forgiving and will accommodate a size range rather than a single precise measurement. My advice: always check the fabric composition before you order a fitted piece. If it says 100% polyester woven or any crepe/woven fabric with no elastane in the mix — be precise about your measurements.

Finery Alternatives Worth Knowing

Finery sits in a brilliant spot in the market — contemporary, quality-focused, with real design intelligence, but without the luxury price tag. If you love that aesthetic, here are some brands worth bookmarking alongside them:

High Street & Contemporary:

  • Me&Em — Arguably the closest in spirit to Finery. Beautifully cut basics and elevated separates that last seasons, not just weeks. Tends to run true to size.

  • Whistles — Clean, modern womenswear with a similar British sensibility. Great for structured pieces and relaxed tailoring. True to size as a rule.

  • Cos — The go-to for considered, minimal design. Relaxed fits throughout — if anything, slightly generous. Brilliant for the same "effortless but edited" aesthetic.

  • Jigsaw — Another brand that shares Finery's appreciation for quality fabric and understated elegance. Their dresses and knitwear are consistently well-reviewed.

  • Massimo Dutti — The European equivalent — refined, architectural cuts in natural fabrics. Tends to run true to size with a slightly continental (narrower) cut through the body.

  • Phase Eight — Excellent for occasionwear and structured dresses if Finery's fitted styles are selling out. Good inclusive sizing and frequently praised for their fit.

  • Reiss — Steps up the price point a little but delivers excellent tailoring and a very consistent size run. Worth it for investment pieces.

  • Mint Velvet — Similar target customer to Finery — relaxed, modern, wearable. Particularly strong on jersey dresses and casual-smart separates.

Two Independent Labels I Love:

  • Kitri — A London-based independent that punches well above its weight. Beautiful prints, clever cuts, and genuinely distinctive design. Sizes 6–22, tends to be true to size with a fitted silhouette — worth sizing up in their structured bodice styles.

  • Nobody's Child — A sustainable British brand that shares Finery's ethos of wearable, design-forward pieces at an accessible price. Consistently good fit across a wide size range, and their dresses are particularly strong.
