What is sizing like at G-Star menswear?

G-Star runs slim and tapered. The waist is broadly true to size, but the cut sits close through the thigh and seat, and the jeans are measured the honest way — waist and leg length in inches, so 32/32, 34/30 and so on. Order your usual waist and you'll normally land it. It's the leg shape, not the number on the tab, that catches most men out.
The quick sizing snapshot
True to size on the waist — the signature 3301 fits as your usual waist measurement, no need to go up or down.
Slim, athletic cut — G-Star is a Dutch brand built around a close, sculpted leg. If you carry muscle on the thigh, that's where you'll feel it first.
Sized in inches (W/L) — waist then leg length, e.g. 32/34. Refreshingly precise once you know your numbers.
Raw denim breaks in — stiff and rigid at first, then it softens and moulds to you over a few weeks.
Mid-rise as standard — most fits sit at the natural hip, not slouchy, not high-waisted.
Tops run fitted — European cut, so tees and overshirts are on the trim, slightly shorter side.
It's the fit name that matters, not just the number
G-Star's whole identity is built on how the leg is engineered, so the model name tells you more than the waist size does. A few worth knowing:
3301 — the classic. The Slim version is genuinely true to size and the one I'd start most men on. Sits mid-rise, tapers gently to the ankle.
Arc 3D — the famous twisted-seam, 3D-bowed leg. Brilliant shape, but it's the tightest through the thigh. If you're between sizes and muscular, this is the one to try on.
3301 Straight / 5620 Regular — your roomier options. Same waist accuracy, far more breathing space in the leg.
Skinny fits (Revend, Airblaze 3D) — heavy stretch, so they cling but rarely gape at the waist. Size as normal.
My rule of thumb: with G-Star, choose your size around the thigh, not the waistband. A belt fixes a slightly loose waist in seconds — a tight thigh you can't sit down in fixes nothing.
Raw versus washed — read the label
Anything marked raw (untreated indigo) arrives rigid and will shrink a touch on the first wash before softening beautifully. Buy those to fit now, wash cold, hang to dry, and let them earn their fades. The washed and stretch pairs are far more forgiving from day one and the safer bet if you're ordering online and can't try before you buy.
A quick confession from the fitting room

Early in my career I ego-bought a pair of Arc 3D jeans in a 32 because I'd "always been a 32". I'm a comfortable 33 through the thigh, and those things gripped my legs like cling film — couldn't crouch, couldn't cross my legs at dinner, spent an evening standing up like a mannequin. Lesson learned. The flip side: a raw 3301 I bought grudgingly a size honest, wore hard for a month, and it moulded into the best-fitting pair of jeans I've owned to this day. G-Star rewards patience and punishes vanity — remember that and you'll be fine.
Where else to look if you love a tapered leg
If G-Star's shape suits you, here's where I'd send you across the price spectrum. (Note for the team: brand list wasn't attached this time, so I've chosen these on fit relevance — worth cross-checking against the master Excel before publishing.)
High street — Next: genuinely reliable tapered and slim denim with consistent sizing, ideal if you want the G-Star silhouette without the break-in.
High street — River Island: sharper, more fashion-led slim and skinny fits with a bit of stretch, and they cut through the thigh in a similar close way.
Independent — Hiut Denim Co: Welsh-made, raw selvedge done properly. If it's the raw-denim ritual you love about G-Star, this is the UK label to know.
Independent — Blackhorse Lane Ateliers: East London selvedge specialists with a proper tapered house cut and a repair-for-life ethos.
Independent — Nudie Jeans: Scandinavian raw-denim heritage, free repairs, and slim tapered fits that age like the best of them.
Designer — A.P.C.: the connoisseur's raw denim. Minimal, rigid, moulds superbly — a natural step up for the G-Star loyalist.
Designer — Acne Studios: Scandinavian tailoring precision applied to denim, with slim and tapered cuts and a cleaner, dressier finish.
