What Is Sizing Like at G-Star Raw? Does G-Star Run Big or Small?

G-Star Raw women's jeans run small — sometimes significantly so. The brand itself recommends going up one to two waist sizes for women, which tells you everything you need to know before you click buy. If you're a UK 12 in most other brands, don't be alarmed when a G-Star size 29 or 30 waist fits you. It's not you. It's the cut — and understanding exactly how their sizing works will save you a lot of frustration (and a very tedious returns process).
The G-Star Sizing System — It's Not UK Sizing
First things first: G-Star doesn't use standard UK sizing for their jeans. Like most premium denim brands, they work in W/L (waist/length) measurements. So you'll be shopping in sizes like 26/30, 28/32, 30/34 — waist in inches followed by inseam in inches. This throws a lot of shoppers off, especially those who aren't used to measuring in inches or who've always just picked up a 10 or 12 off the rail.
Here's a very rough starting guide (though please — use Tellar's Store Size Lookup for your exact number rather than relying on approximate conversions):

My G-Star Moment (AKA The Great Jeans Incident)
A few years back I was styling a shoot and grabbed a pair of G-Star 3301 Skinny jeans for one of the models — a very straightforward UK 10. Ordered a W27 as I would for any mid-market denim brand, and they arrived looking utterly beautiful. Then she tried them on. They made it about halfway up her thighs before coming to an indignant halt. I've never seen such a polite expression of despair on a person's face.
Turns out the 3301 Skinny is one of G-Star's tightest, most unforgiving cuts — zero elastane tolerance for sizing errors. A W29 would have been the call. Lesson very firmly learned. The waist number on the label is not a number you can casually interpret — it genuinely means a 27-inch circumference with almost no stretch built in.
Sizing by Category — What to Expect
Skinny & slim-fit jeans (3301 Skinny, Revend Super Slim, Lynn): Run small — size up one to two waist sizes without hesitation. Very little stretch in the non-Superstretch versions. If in doubt, go up.
Relaxed & boyfriend fits (Boyfriend Tapered, Lhana Boyfriend): Much more forgiving — tend to be true to your actual waist measurement. A good entry point if you're new to G-Star sizing.
Superstretch styles: The stretch fabric gives you a little more latitude. These are the styles where sticking to your usual measurement is most likely to work out.
Wide-leg & flared cuts: True to size at the waist but cut generously through the leg — pair with a more fitted top to avoid looking overwhelmed.
Jackets & outerwear: Run small through the chest and upper arms. If you're wearing a substantial layer underneath, or have broader shoulders, size up. Their military-influenced cuts are structured and close-fitting by design.
Tops, sweatshirts & knitwear: Slightly smaller than average — if you're between sizes or prefer a relaxed fit, go up one. Their boxy tees are designed as an oversized cut, so stay true to size for those.
What's Actually Worth Buying at G-Star?

Let's be honest — G-Star isn't cheap. A pair of their jeans sits anywhere from £80 to £160+, so you want to make sure you're spending wisely. From a stylist's perspective, here's where the investment genuinely pays off:
Raw denim jeans — This is G-Star's heritage and they do it brilliantly. Raw (untreated) denim will mould to your body over time and develop a uniquely personal character. It's a slow fashion approach that justifies the price tag.
The 3301 straight or slim — An iconic cut that looks effortlessly cool, does the leg justice, and works from desk to dinner without trying too hard.
Their cargo and utility trousers — A surprise hit in recent years. Well-constructed, genuinely functional and very much on the right side of the utility trend.
Denim jackets — Stiff, structured and built to last. Size up and wear them slightly oversized for a more contemporary feel.
Denim Alternatives — High Street, Premium & Designer
G-Star is a brilliant brand, but the sizing learning curve is real. Whether you want a more straightforward fit or you're simply exploring your options, here are my top picks across all budgets:
HIGH STREET
Levi's — The undisputed denim classic. Also uses W/L sizing, but sizing is more consistent and widely understood. The 501, Ribcage and Wedgie fits are all brilliant. Available everywhere and genuinely built to last.
Abercrombie & Fitch — Massively underrated for denim. Their Curve Love range is genuinely one of the best high street fits for women with more curve through the hip — sizing tends to run true.
Topshop (now online via ASOS) — Still one of the most-searched jeans ranges for a reason. Their Jamie and Joni fits have cult status and tend to be very consistent.
River Island — Great value denim with a genuinely impressive size range. Their mid and high-rise skinny styles are consistently well-reviewed for fit.
Warehouse — Solid, contemporary denim at a fair price. Their straight-leg and flared styles in particular have been highlighted by style press as strong picks for the current jean trends.
Urban Outfitters — BDG is their own brand and it's excellent. The mom jean and paperbag-waist styles fit beautifully and tend to be true to size. Particularly good for a G-Star-adjacent aesthetic.
Hollister — Don't sleep on these. Their Ultra High Rise and Curvy ranges specifically offer an excellent fit for women who struggle with the waist-to-hip ratio that trips up brands like G-Star.
All Saints — Steps up slightly in price but delivers a darker, more editorial denim aesthetic that shares G-Star's edge. Their straight-leg and skinny cuts are consistently praised.
PREMIUM
Citizens of Humanity — Cult LA denim brand that has crossed firmly into the British wardrobe. Excellent craftsmanship, flattering cuts and a very consistent size run. Their Rocket and Goldie styles are forever pieces.
Paige — Another premium denim staple worth every penny. The Hoxton high-rise is a particular favourite — comfortable, flattering and sizes up predictably. A safe landing for anyone frustrated with G-Star's inconsistency.
Calvin Klein — Jeans done with quiet confidence. Their iconic straight and slim cuts run true to size and have that effortless New York minimalism that never dates.
Tommy Hilfiger — Consistently reliable for well-cut denim with strong quality control. Their relaxed and straight-leg styles are particularly good and typically run true to size.
LUXURY & DESIGNER
Frame Denim — The choice of editors and stylists worldwide for a reason. Immaculately constructed, flattering across multiple body shapes and with a size consistency that makes online ordering genuinely stress-free.
Acne Studios — For those who love G-Star's design-forward, fashion-with-intent aesthetic, Acne is the natural step up. Their denim is beautifully made, consistently sized and has a considered, Scandinavian intelligence to every cut.
AG Jeans — Premium Californian denim with exceptional attention to fit. Known for their comfortable waistbands and flattering silhouettes. A loyal following among women who want quality that truly lasts.
TWO INDEPENDENT LABELS WORTH DISCOVERING
MiH Jeans — A London-born independent that has quietly built a devoted following. Their denim is timeless rather than trend-led, with an emphasis on fit across real body shapes. Particularly strong for wide-leg and flared styles. Sizing runs true.
Boyish Jeans — A brilliant, sustainably-produced independent label making waves in the UK. All styles use organic or recycled fabrics, sizing is clear and consistent, and the cuts are genuinely flattering. A left-field pick that's worth bookmarking.
