What Is Sizing Like at Gabriela Hearst?

Gabriela Hearst runs true to size, and in my experience the fit is one of the more reliable ones at the luxury end of the market. If you're a UK 12, you're a US 8 — and that US 8 will almost certainly fit you exactly as it should. No vanity sizing tricks here. This is a brand built on precision, craftsmanship and a certain quiet confidence, and that philosophy extends all the way to how the clothes are cut.

The Gabriela Hearst Story (and Why Sizing Matters Here)

Gabriela Hearst is a New York-based luxury brand founded by Uruguayan designer Gabriela Hearst in 2015. It rocketed to prominence when Michelle Obama wore a bespoke ivory Hearst suit to the 2021 inauguration — and the world collectively lost its mind. Rightly so. The brand is known for its extraordinarily structured tailoring, its commitment to sustainability (it was one of the first luxury houses to go carbon-neutral), and its iconic Nina bag, which has been on a waiting list longer than some people's mortgage terms.

What I love about this brand from a styling perspective is that the design is never fussy. Pieces are architectural, considered, and cut for women who know what they want to wear — not women who want to follow a trend. That clarity of vision means the sizing tends to be equally clear-cut. You're not contending with wildly oversized runway proportions or strange vanity-sizing to flatter the customer. The clothes are cut to be worn.

How Does Gabriela Hearst Sizing Work?

The brand uses US sizing, which runs from US 0 to US 14. Here's a quick conversion reference for UK shoppers:

  • US 0 = UK 4 (XS)

  • US 2 = UK 6 (XS–S)

  • US 4 = UK 8 (S)

  • US 6 = UK 10 (S–M)

  • US 8 = UK 12 (M)

  • US 10 = UK 14 (M–L)

  • US 12 = UK 16 (L)

  • US 14 = UK 18 (L–XL)

The brand does not go above a US 14, which is a real limitation — and one worth knowing about before you spend time falling in love with a piece. It's a fairly common frustration in the luxury sector, and Gabriela Hearst is no exception.

Tailoring and Structure: What to Expect on the Body

I had a moment with a Gabriela Hearst blazer a couple of years ago. I tried it on in a sample sale and it just sat — shoulders bang-on, waist slightly defined without being tight, the sleeve length exactly where it should be. It was one of those rare experiences where nothing needed adjusting. That's the tailoring standard here.

That said, the cut is not forgiving in the way that draped or more relaxed luxury can be. If you're between sizes, I'd generally recommend the following:

  • For tailored pieces (blazers, trousers, structured dresses): Size up if you're between sizes. The structure means there's limited ease, and you want the shoulders to sit perfectly — that's non-negotiable in tailoring this precise.

  • For knitwear: True to size. The cashmere and wool pieces are cut with comfortable but not oversized proportions. The fabrics have a natural softness that makes them very wearable at their labelled size.

  • For dresses: True to size in most cases, but worth considering your shoulder width, as many of the dress silhouettes are quite structured at the bodice.

Fabric Quality and Why It Affects Fit

One thing I always say to clients when they're investing in luxury: the quality of the cloth changes how it behaves on your body. Gabriela Hearst uses extraordinary materials — Scottish cashmere, Italian wool, sustainable deadstock fabrics — and these fabrics don't "give" in the way that synthetics do. They hold their shape beautifully, which means you need to be wearing the right size. They won't stretch out, they won't relax into you. But they will, if the fit is right, look completely incredible.

This is actually why I always use Tellar as a reference point when shopping luxury online. Getting your measurements accurate before you order is genuinely the difference between a purchase you treasure and a return you begrudgingly organise.

Is Gabriela Hearst Worth the Investment?

Post Image

I'm going to be honest with you — Gabriela Hearst pieces are extraordinary, but the price point is extreme. A blazer will set you back upwards of £2,000. A dress, £1,500 to £3,000+. The Nina bag? Don't ask. These are not casual purchases. They are the pieces you buy when you know exactly who you are, what you want, and you have the budget to match.

For those of us who love the aesthetic — that quiet, confident, architectural luxury — but perhaps not the price tag, there are some brilliant alternatives at various price points that deliver a very similar energy.

Where to Find a Similar Look for Less

Here are my picks across the market for that same refined, understated sensibility:

  • Cos — My go-to for Gabriela Hearst-adjacent aesthetics on a normal budget. The minimal cut, clean lines and quality fabrics are genuinely impressive for the price. Their tailoring section is particularly good.

  • Massimo Dutti — Superb for structured blazers and tailored trousers. The fabric quality here punches well above the high-street bracket. Reliable sizing, excellent tailoring.

  • Whistles — A brilliant mid-market option for that polished, intentional dressing vibe. Their suiting pieces and shift dresses are particularly well-cut.

  • Me&Em — Genuinely one of the best British brands for quality knitwear and smart casualwear. The cashmere pieces especially are exceptional for the price, with sizing that's consistent and well-thought-out.

  • Reiss — For formal and tailored occasion dressing. If you want that structured, occasion-ready look without the five-figure price tag, Reiss delivers it consistently.

  • Jigsaw — Understated, beautifully constructed, and chronically underrated. Their approach to fabric and colour is genuinely sophisticated. Excellent for women who find most high-street ranges too trend-led.

  • The White Company — For the knitwear and relaxed luxury angle. Their cashmere and linen pieces channel that same slow-fashion, investment-piece philosophy that underpins Gabriela Hearst.

  • Hobbs — Brilliant for structured workwear and occasion tailoring at an accessible price. Their blazer range in particular is worth your time.

Two Independent Brands Worth Knowing

I always try to throw a couple of less obvious names into these posts, because the fashion world is bigger and more interesting than the high street would have you believe:

  • Envelope 1976 — A Scandinavian independent label that makes exactly the kind of considered, architectural, wearable-art pieces that Gabriela Hearst fans will adore. Excellent sizing, beautiful fabrics, and a refreshingly honest approach to fashion.

  • Deveaux New York — If you love the tailored power of Gabriela Hearst but want something a little more accessible in price, Deveaux is doing genuinely impressive work. Sharp suiting, excellent construction, and a strong point of view.
