What Is Sizing Like at Gant?

The short version: Gant runs broadly true to size, but it's cut tailored. Nobody's trying to trick you with the numbers — a Medium is a Medium — but the silhouette is trimmer than a lot of the high street, so the same size can feel different here.First, a bit of context on the brand.

How the fits actually break down

The biggest mistake I see is men shopping by size label and ignoring the fit name printed right above it. Gant runs several, and they behave very differently:

  • Shirts — Regular, Fitted (or Slim), and Hugger. Regular is genuinely forgiving and suits most builds. Fitted skims the shoulders and tapers — lovely if you're lean, snug if you carry a bit through the chest. Hugger is the fashion cut: shorter and properly close to the body. If you're broad, a Fitted Medium can wear like a Small.

  • Polos and tees run a touch slimmer through the torso than you'd expect. Brilliant if you want that crisp, tucked-in look; size up if you prefer room.

  • Trousers and chinos are the classic catch — they tend to run long, with a traditional cut. Check your inside leg properly rather than assuming.

  • Blazers come in a Tailor cut (contemporary, slim shoulder) and the Weekender (their slimmest, unstructured shoulder). The Weekender is a fashion fit, not a safe everyday choice.

  • Footwear uses standard European sizing and sits true to size. Order your usual EU number.

One genuinely useful detail: Gant is one of the few shirt makers still offering a 14" collar, so if you've got a slimmer neck and spend your life with shirts gaping at the top button, they're worth a look.

A quick fitting-room confession

Early in my career I kitted a client out in a Slim Fit Oxford for his engagement shoot, ordered to his "usual" Large, and it arrived looking painted on across the back. Rookie error — I'd treated the fit name as decoration. We swapped to a Regular Large and it was perfect. The label hadn't lied; I'd simply ignored half of it. Lesson learned, and one I've never repeated.

The brands I'd style alongside Gant

Gant lives in the smart-casual, preppy-but-grown-up lane. These are the labels I reach for to build a wardrobe around it, across every budget.

High street

  • Charles Tyrwhitt — if Gant's shirt fits puzzle you, Tyrwhitt's clear Slim/Classic/Extra Slim labelling is a great training ground, and their non-iron Oxfords are workhorses for the price.

  • Crew Clothing — the closest high-street cousin to Gant's coastal-preppy mood. Their rugbys and chinos slot in seamlessly and the cut is a little more relaxed if Gant feels tight on you.

Independent & boutique

  • Percival — a London independent doing brilliant knitted polos and characterful shirts. Where Gant is classic, Percival adds the personality piece that stops an outfit looking like a uniform.

  • Wax London — their textured overshirts and waffle-knit pieces layer beautifully over a Gant Oxford, and they're made with real attention to fabric.

  • Sunspel — British, understated, and the benchmark for a perfect plain tee or polo. Pair one under a Gant blazer and you've got quiet, considered smart-casual nailed.

Designer & luxury

  • Polo Ralph Lauren — the preppy benchmark Gant is often measured against. If you want the heritage look elevated, this is where it goes; just note Ralph's fits run their own way, so don't assume your Gant size carries over.

  • Brunello Cucinelli — the quiet-luxury endgame. Cashmere and beautifully cut trousers for when you want Gant's spirit in its most expensive form.

  • Drake's — for knitwear, ties and that slightly rumpled English elegance. A Drake's shetland over a Gant button-down is one of my favourite autumn combinations.

What's worth buying right now

Post Image

  • The Oxford shirt — the cornerstone of the whole brand. Buy it in Regular fit unless you're genuinely lean, and you'll wear it for years.

  • Premium cotton-twill chinos — structured and versatile, but mind the length on the longer cut.

  • A merino or cashmere-blend jumper with subtle logo detailing — proper everyday luxury that punches above its price.
